Such an incredibly intense and heartbreaking movie. It had me cringing, tearing up and kept me on the edge of my seat.
A tragic true story, but the film didn't engage me emotionally. Good performances, however, and a worthy testament to those who suffered because of the event.
The ending scene in the hotel really got to me. Part of me going into the film expected the basic hero of the story ending and film where it is all smiles but no this films tell it how it is, shows the real emotions and turmoil as they attempt to get out of the fire from all focal characters. Love this movie and i love the team of Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg
Anything with Kurt Russell in it is has a head start as far as I'm concerned. He's fantastic in this. Smart as a whip and tough as nails. Just what I'd expect. I'm also turning into a Mark Wahlberg fan. He's the headliner here. He's really likable and plays a character that is perfect, I guess. Well, this movie is based on a true story so I'm not sure if the person he is portraying is flawless, but then, there's no time to explore that anyway. Nice work, Wahlberg.
I didn't realize until the movie ended that it was directed by Peter Berg. No doubt he learned some disaster on the water lessons from directing "Battleship" (I'm only sort of kidding). "Deepwater Horizon" not surprisingly paints the company BP as greedy, careless, assholes. Still, the focus is on the survival of the main characters so sanctimonious soap-boxing, moralizing or preaching is minimal. It's kind of refreshing. Oh, there's plenty of glares and stares passed between the BP corporate types and the bust-their-nuts Deepwater crew. But ultimately mistakes get made, whether caused by greed or stupidity, and everyone is forced to react to the Hell exploding around them.
And speaking of explosions, Berg levels the rig with mud, oil and fire. I don't know if he embellishes to extremes or not, but the chaos he creates on-screen is impressive.
"Deepwater Horizon" is a satisfying movie. The fact that it's based on a true story adds to its effectiveness, but it would be good even if it were total fiction.
Althougth this has a lot of technical terms going on in the dialogue you understand what was the reason for the catastrophe.
The last 15 min are emotionally intense and when I realised I was watching this on the exact day it happened 7 years ago I was shivering all over.
Peter Berg managed to really surprise me with Deepwater Horizon. It's probably one of the action movies I would rate the highest from 2016.
The story about Deepwater Horizon is a tragic story about corporate greed and human tragedy. The fact that we all know what the end result is makes Bergs job even better, as the challenge of that is one that not many directors manage to overcome.
Deepwater is on one side one hell of an action ride, but what impresses me more is the story and the way it shows us human courage and determination. I know there's probably some artistic freedom attached to some of this, but I know from firsthand experience that when faced with impossible odds, humans can be incredible...
The cast is excellent and has a huge part in making this movie as good as it is. There's really nothing bad to mention when it comes to the acting. I especially liked John Malkovich...he just makes shady characters shine.
In any case, Deepwater Horizon is a must see, and you should really watch it with the volume turned up, as the sound is amazing.
No doubt, a great looking film documenting the events that led to one of the worst accidental oil spills in marine history. Director Peter Berg does an excellent job pacing the film with a palpable, mounting sense of tension with some stunning set pieces. Unfortunately the human aspect of the film resorts to cliches, stereotypes and lacks any real depth thus making the whole experience rather unmemorable despite its impressive cast.
This is an amazing film and would recommend any one to watch this. This film managed to play with my emotions and at the end of the film when the credits started rolling and they showed you the 11 that died from this accident I did get tearful and generally felt sad that such a disaster happened.
This movie was released soon after my father had passed away in a similar situation, but in an FPSO ship, and for that reason, it took me so long to be able to watch it and I still don't want my mother to do so.
My father died saving his crew and I can tell you from experience that there's no justice in this world, nor even for big things like this.
I can only feel empathy for the families of those who died in the Deepwater Horizon, the deep damage the incident caused to them... it's sad to think they probably didn't get any real support from those companies afterward, just like we didn't get any as well from the big Norwegian company my father worked to.
In the end, you can read all the accident reports you can find, with their "consequences" for the accidents sites, but you won't find one that includes the consequences for the families of the deceased ones and the trauma of the survivors.
There should be so much more movies about these "accidents"... maybe it'd raise awareness of how dangerous and risky this work is and why it should be better and heavily regulated and supervised - but not by the companies operating them, but by neutrals affiliated to the Navy, who won't cover up the wrong things in the name of profit. If there was more serious supervision, many of these accidents could be avoided, for the good of the sailors, crew and the sea.
Although it started off a bit slow and I had a hard time understanding some of the technical terms they were using, I really loved and was fascinated by Deepwater Horizon. I didn't know the story because when it happened I was pretty young and I think it's great that they tell this story through a movie so that the people who didn't know much about it understand it better and perhaps get that these "island" aren't so very great for our dear planet.
It was a very intense film and the acting was really good! I'd like to see Malk Wahlberg doing more of these kinds of movies because he is really great. Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez and Dylan O'Briend were amazing as well, although I felt like the one female character (Andrea) was a bit of a burned in the end, the acting was great. The explosions were so intense and beautifully made, it made me sit on the edge of my seat.
I really really recommend everyone to watch this movie because apart from it being a great movie it's also a learning experience.
heartbreaking movie. very intense and well acted. nothing else to say to this true story movie. loved the cast! just such a disaster and the lost souls.
What an amazing movie...and the acting is superb
A very intense movie to watch, in my opinion. Sadly I knew very little about this oil disaster, so this was also very informative to me. Don't quite understand why this movie got only +/- 65% score.
Deepwater Horizon is a compelling and intense film that provides an excellent portrayal of the true environmental disaster that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell deliver exceptional performances, bringing the courage and determination of the real-life heroes who fought to save lives and contain the oil spill to life on the screen. The film's special effects are well-done, immersing you in the chaos and danger of the oil rig explosion. Overall, Deepwater Horizon is a gripping and emotional film that tells an important story and pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who were involved in the disaster.
And the facts are as with most disasters. The money train caused it, and money also protected the perpetrators.
Movies based on real stories like this one are always good. I remember the accident happened when I was a child and didn't how severe it was, but now I do. RIP.
what a beautiful movie full of many feelings that come loose on you especially on the last of the movie.
i love true stories always comes to you full of emotions.
nice story Deepwater Horizon.
I would've loved if they focused on getting the average watcher to the picture and the aftermath after. Focusing solely on explosions is too cliché and no more gives a sense of tension. It's just boring. I hope future real-life events movies could learn from HBO's Chernobyl.
t has been good, well done in terms of image and sound, you feel the anguish, the fire, the brown liquid. Classical start and development of the catastrophe, which is worse to be based on real events
Deepwater Horizon is a really good film that shows the events of April 20, 2010 in a very realistic way in my opinion. I also thought that the movie had just the right running time and was therefore never boring.
Too realistic great scenes and very tense..Berg knew exactly how he wanted to be and he achieved it remarkably!
Brought to you by Deepshit Petroleum
This movie mainly focus on the accident, on the people who died onto the rig and the opposition between the rig workers and BP, but forgot all about the few months of ecological disaster due to the oil spilling and the time needed to seal the well. The director show a lot of respect for the rig workers who lost their lives but almost none for the people, the fauna and flora directly impacted by the ecological disaster. Disappointing.
"Deepwater Horizon" narrates the true story of the disaster of the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" in 2010.
Peter Berg directs once again a true event and does it very well. The director of "Lone Survivor" brings the right amount of emotion to attach the viewer to the screen.
The cast also does a fantastic job, especially Mark Wahlberg (Oscar nomination?) and John Malkovich.
Although the first act is a little slower than the second and third, is fundamental to the presentantion and development of the characters and meet their motivations.
In the end, "Deepwater Horizon" is a brilliant movie and a beautiful tribute to the people who went through this disaster. Definitely one of the best movies of the year.
As expected this is a bit of a propaganda movie against BP but that was of course rather expected. It is still watchable. The dramatization is fairly well done and the effects are believable as well as enjoyable. If you watch it as a disaster drama and special effects movie it is definitely okay.
As a documentary, well I would say that it falls short. The movie only covers the initial explosion. Once the platform is evacuated the movie stops. I am somewhat disappointed at that. I would at least have liked to see the attempts to put out the fire. Where are the scenes with the boats trying to douse the rig with water for instance?
I would also have liked the film to cover the attempts to close the well, the technical challenges involved and the fight against the oil spill. This is not at all covered.
I feel that the film attempts to ride on public opinion, pretend to be a action/disaster movie as well as a fact telling one and cash in on the accident. The action/disaster parts were well done but the movie left out a lot of the, perhaps less spectacular, drama around the accident. It is a shame because now it became a rather ordinary movie as well as giving a distasteful feeling they were just trying to make some quick bucks on the disaster.
That also made the factual parts somewhat in doubt. I feel the movie is making a strong effort to portray BP as willful criminals. I am sure there is plenty of blame that should fly BP’s way but at the same time one can read that “On November 8, 2010, the inquiry by the Oil Spill Commission revealed its findings that BP had not sacrificed safety in attempts to make money, but that some decisions had increased risks on the rig.”. As always, things are not black and white and oil drilling is risky business after all.
Anyway, enough ramblings, I found the movie okay, nothing more and nothing less.
Incredible, sad and terrifying story.
Awesome film! Well worth a watch.
The director of Battleship has redeemed himself, surprisingly with 3 Mark Wahlberg movies based on true stories.
6/10 ... Formulaic and utterly predictable but we'll acted, stylised etc. How come Andrea came off the ship without a blemish on her face? I groaned at the sycophantic USA flag and lord's prayer during the rescue scene.
This film really touched and upset me, so many similarities between this and the Piper Alpha disaster. So many lives lost in both disasters and I believe no individual has even been prosecuted, wrong, wrong, wrong.
Another thrilling, gripping tale from Peter Berg. There's not as much character development as I'd prefer before the craziness kicks off, but I get a good enough handle on these people trials and tribulations. Good stuff.
A entertaining movie for a slow afternoon, but don't expect much else from it and much the less to be an accurate account of either deep-sea oil drilling or of the actual events that caused the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon", which in fact wasn't directly owned by BP but chartered, to catch fire and sink without sealing its main drilling.
Peter Berg creates another emotional and blue collar story with Deepwater Horizon. The visuals are great and the acting is great with Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell being the standouts. Its got the spectacle of a blockbuster with the acting quality and emotion of a drama. One of the more solid films this year.
Really sad story, great effects, but not edge of my seat stuff.
Didn't have me on the edge of my seat. Ok all round
The initial explosion was INSANE! Interesting story, had me looking up how deep water oil drilling works. Good stuff
I don't think I've ever seen such an intense explosion sequence in any movie ever, incredible. Also everything else was way above par, pretty good movie with some solid performances - well worth the view.
Only available at 480 resolution
I sure which this dam thing would work!!! #ShiftvW8
To view pictures with my Glasses pretty good editing thrillers. The story is nothing more feature films like the action.
Asked for an action movie, got so much more!
Went into this movie expecting some good acting and nothing more, but after already fifteen minutes I knew there was so much more to this movie than Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell crawling trough some flames.
The conversation at the beginning between Mike Williams, played by Mark Wahlberg, his wife and his daughter really shows what you can expect during the first hour of the movie: good characters with really good conversations. It just feels real when Mike enters the Deepwater Horizon-platform and does a little talk with everyone he encounters. It really gets you invested in the story before everything, literally, blows up.
Eventually you are on the edge of your seat when everything goes down. Great explosions, good shots and ok sounds at this point were enough for me to keep interested until the very last second.
A couple of minor nitpicks are the scenes created in the pump line, they really didn't need those scenes to raise the tension, and the fact that there was the "America!-scene". Why was it there? To show how good America is? Really didn't need to be there.
Overal great movie that absolutely has a place in my top-10 of 2016.
I do like my true event stories, and i think mark wahlberg still has it, and got to say kurt russell still going strong ha all great.. this film was fully action packed.. lots of flames.. RIP to the guys that lost there lives in the true event..

It has a lot of unknown oil terms and happenings on the rig that the viewer cannot comprehend. A lot of explosions but i didn't feel the tense throughout the last half hour. The role of BP was greatly undermined.
