Breaking and entering turns bad for a few robbers. Do you think you'll have some difficulty feeling any sympathy for these people? There is a reasonable chance you will. But maybe you're not dead inside like I am.
I do appreciate this movie for a few aspects. The main thing, and its most important aspect to be good at, is the fact that it doesn't feel repetitive. The story does indeed progress, with new plot elements unfolding the whole way. I was afraid we'd just be stuck in the same horror film style for an hour and a half. Without this, I'd have hated it and wanted to leave after 20 minutes.
The other big positive is that jump scares did actually originate from the story. They (mostly) make sense for what is happening. Of course this is still the cheap way to make a horror movie scary, but when done in a good way I don't mind it.
But unfortunately the film does have a decent handful of problems. The primary one for me is that I don't care about these characters' lives. They are terrible people, and the connection the film tries to create for them is weak. The layout of the location is also not doing it for me. They make this average sized house feel like a goddamn mansion. Someone walks into the next room and it is like they disappear.
Finally, the climax of this movie let me down soooo much. Seriously, it was about to end and I thought it was a really solid one. Then it keeps going and I thought this end was decent. Then it keeps going and I think this end is meh. Then it keeps going and the end is stupid, standard formula horror. This really knocked it down for me.
If you're looking for a horror and you're sort of into the genre, you might like it a bit more. I'll never pick to watch it again, but won't mind if someone else picks it out.
The entire second half of the movie was completely unnecessary and ruined the film. It was enough that the thieves had to escape because they would die, and it could have been enough to let the audience decide whether they root for the home owner or the thieves without throwing in all the extra twisted stuff.
It was very very interesting, until that stupid gross rape scene that thank God never happened, but just the thought of it makes me sick. That's the only reason why I rated it with 6 and not 7.
Scumbags play hide and seek with an armed blind man who's weird. Good for what it is, but it isn't much.
A fairly forgettable movie about a robbery gone wrong. The main characters are three hooligan youths who decide to rob a blind veteran. But things go badly when they discover that the veteran is not as defenseless as he seems. Also, he is crazy, and has kidnapped a young woman in his basement so that she might replace him the daughter she accidentally killed in an accident. Two of them lose their lives. The movie wants us to sympathize with two of the youths. But, while the viewer does not sympathize with the blind veteran, neither can he sympathize with the young thieves, regardless to what good they were planning to use the fruits of their thieving.
People who know me, are familiar with my stance regarding horror flicks. They all follow similar patterns and are boring as f***.
Just the existence of "the jump scare" as a highlight of the genre alone tells you all you need to know.
But "Don't Breathe" ... I loved it?!
That I adore Jane Levy is partly to blame but this also is a smart and genuinely thrilling experience. Imho a must-see in this genre.
Excellently directed thriller/horror with great sound design some typically cliche characters' decision. Once the suspense starts it doesn't stop gripping the audience's view, except only a momentary break for the audience to reorient navigating the dark halls of The Blind Man's home - just like the characters. Although there's something that makes me difficult to empathize with the protagonists, as they're robbing a house of a blind man (how inappropriate that sounds?), and the way the film tries to "alleviate" this by making The Blind Man a sex offender, though granted it's because he lost his daughter, feels kinda cheap. And like most horror movies, characters are reckless and short-sighted, but most part of the movie makes up for it. Props for Stephen Lang for portraying The Blind Man very ruthlessly.
Perfect definition of a thriller and the title couldn't be more accurate and suited for the movie.
A movie that takes a very dark turn very fast. I really liked the plot of this movie, simple enough but they made all the right moves. Good casting and I got quite a few jump scares.
A prime example of a thoroughly well-titled film. Because I didn't breathe for almost the entire fucking run time. Don't Breathe is a masterful, nerve-wracking, butt-clenching, edge-of-seat-clutching piece of cinema.
Put Jane Levy in more things please.
I wouldn't consider this movie a horror movie.
I rate it "keeping girls in the basement is so 2008" out of ten
A thoroughly entertaining, well-directed and anxiety-inducing thrill-ride, elevated by prestine editing and sound design, great cinematography and a well-developed and perfectly-paced plot, that progresses in an unexpected manner.
It was okay, though some moments were annoying. Wouldn't recommend it.
Brilliant idea, very well executed but is ruined by complete lack of characters worth empathizing with or rooting for.
Money is your run of the mill dumb wannabe crook whose death you'll welcome. The swagger, the stupidity, lack of tact, while all surely there by design, they leave very little room to feel anything except being glad he'll no longer be on screen.
Alex feels like a character in a wrong movie. Someone that smart and with a fully functioning conscience wouldn't be dragged into a scenario of robbing houses, regardless of the hopeless crush he's harboring toward Rocky. He feels out of place and because of that the immersion of the scenario feels... I don't know, hard to believe. Casting an actor whose face and demeanor only hammers home just how out of place is he didn't help either.
Rocky's trailer park sob story does very little to excuse her from the fact that she willingly engaged in robbing a blind man. A blind man! not only that, she talked a reluctant friend into doing it with her. Even her desire of getting her sister away from the waste of oxygen that is her mother doesn't change that fact. The decision to go in was made prior to finding out that the prey is actually a predator. While the turkey baster scene does put you on her side, for obvious freaking reasons, she's still hardly redeemable .
The only thing that gets you to root for those three, well two (not counting the $ idiot) is the fact that they're dealing with a person far worse than they are. That, again, leaves no one to root for. The girl in the basement is the natural choice but her departure is as sudden as her arrival.
What the movie does brilliantly is setup the atmosphere, the tension of standing in the room with a killer and knowing that making a single sound can be the difference between life and death. That and that alone carries the movie. The rest is just... meh.
Streamed via Hulu (FXM)
Damn, that's wild! Super tense and thrilling robbery gone wrong horror/thriller with a lot of twists and turns. And it's short! It grabs my attention from the very beginning and doesn't let go. I really like the shots and fantastic camera movements. Sound is the key for this type of film and I think they nailed it. The tension is real and unforgiving I even hold my breath a couple of times. It's stupid but I had trouble connecting with Rocky character because I couldn't unsee her as Zoey Clarke the entire time, but overall the cast did a great job. Especially the blind man!
"There is nothing a man cannot do once he accepts the fact that there is no god."
What a breath of fresh air. This movie is great. The way Fede Alvarez uses tension and sound to tell the story is excellent and he kept me guessing what was coming next. Starts off good, then it gets even better.
What a great thriller. It doesn't go that far beyond it's concept, but it still kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat, guessing what was going to happen next.
From the people behind Evil Dead, and the amazing Sam Raimi, is a very effective horror?/thriller burglar movie. The direction from Fede Álvarez is just as great as he always is. Lots of panning long takes and a vivid color scheme, even for a movie that takes place in a dark, moody house. I wasn't necessarily terrified at what I was watching, but plenty of new scenarios kept coming up that interested me the entire runtime. The night-vision scene in the basement is one of the coolest sequences I've seen executed in quite awhile.
There's plenty of little twists and turns here and there, maybe a little predictable at parts, but nonetheless, still a very exciting and worthwhile suspense feature.
Well didn’t see that coming... ha I really enjoyed this one, I do like action all the way through. Good cast. Bring on number 2!
I didn't really like it. There is literally zero character development and I'm left off with very little information as to why they burgle houses. The moments of tension have been seen in so many films of the same genre that you can basically predict the whole film. Anyway...
REALLY, REALLY SO I'M SUPPOSED TO FEEL SOMETHING FOR THESE THIEVING BASTARD THAT ARE WILL TO ROB A BLIND WAR VETERAN, NO...JUST...NO
EVERYONE NEEDED TAKING OUT. THEY ALL ABSOLUTELY NEEDED TO GET WHAT THEY DESERVED, SHAME COS THE MOVIE WAS AWESOME AND WELL ACTED AND PLAYED OUT. GOT ME INVESTED AND ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT.
THAT STORY WITH THE WOMAN WAS AWESOME.
THEN IT LOST PACE TOWARDS THE END AND THE END COMPLETELY SUCKED
LOOSES A LOT OF POINTS FOR ME FROM 10/10 4/10
I'LL STICK WITH THE MOVIE
GOOD SAMARITAN
FOR SUPERIOR FROM THE VERY START TO THE VERY END
The Blind Man is a new creepy and fresh horror villain. I never knew what to expect from the movie. Despite a cliche Horror movie ending Don't Breath is a really crazy movies
It`s the scariest happenings, I couldn't stop watching, i experience the fear, the hope; and all the human madness; truly; a sleep taker.
Enjoyed this film, felt sorry for the blind man at first. Never judge a book by it's cover! Very creepy and has you on the edge of your seat!
After conjuring is the best horror movie of the year by far!
I couldnt breathe in cinema so i couldnt ask for more ;)
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... It'll alllllll be over soon
i watched it twice and it still gets me on my feet. i loved the story and how it plays out, beautifully done!
This movie wasn't entirely terrible. It does require the viewer to completely suspend disbelief and let some plot holes slide. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone but watching it once isn't a complete waste of time.
It's a really good film, well written (it had me at the edge of my seat almost all the time) and with an amazing photography; but for me it needs at least half an hour more towards the end. I felt it was a really anticlimactic ending.
So, I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie before I watched it - but I was hoping for at least one quality - suspense, and in its minimal requirement, it no doubt delivered. The title, Don't Breathe, isn't only telling the characters to keep quiet for fear the blind man would find them, but it is also instructing the audience to hold their breath as well. I was highly impressed and satisfied with how much suspense the film held - it wasn't about scaring an audience. It wasn't about jump scares or the like, but deep and quiet reveals that develop a natural substance that can actually scare an audience and make them fear for the worst. In short, you are feeling what the characters are feeling; that's incredible.
Next, I want to talk about the direction of the film. On one hand, I wasn't a fan that it had to go a violent route so fast. I wanted a lot of stealthy, jaw-dropping suspense throughout the movie. I actually wanted it to practically be a silent movie - other than the variant sounds of footsteps, exhales of held breath, of tripping over whatever. That's what I wanted to see in the movie because I truly believe that would have created an interesting atmosphere and possibly be one of the most suspenseful movies...ever. On the other hand, the direction it does take is kind of unpredictable, and I love not being able to predict things.
The visuals in the movie are interesting enough to take into consideration. You'll notice a lot of green and blue hues - but mostly green. Imagine in The Matrix when they doused everything in a greenish tint. The thing about that is, back in 1999, that sort of trick was interesting and gave the film a unique vibe. Nowadays, it's been done so much that when you see it, something deep down starts to question the quality of the movie. The tint itself feels cheap, even though I know it's probably not. So if I had anything negative to talk about, it would actually be that.
Don't Breathe is a good movie. Not perfect, but good. While I sit here thinking I could have made a more suspenseful tale, that's not what the writer or director wanted. They wanted some suspense, and some really twisted ideas and visuals - which they undoubtedly achieve. Some bits and pieces of the film could be considered over-the-top, but the way I saw it was...it had impressive moments. In other movies where they focus on jump scares or push the limits on gore, this movie didn't - what it did do was present an idea, a wonderfully twisted idea and you love every second of that because why not? Check it out, it's entertaining enough and worth a watch!
That freaking dog at the beginning, almost threw my snacks in the air! But otherwise, not that scary and to watch a blind man chase teens in a house for 1 hour, it gets kinda boring after a while. But it's still a good movie!
Home Alone: Grown-Up Version
Moral of the story: Greed Kills!
They had multiple opportunities to get out of this alive, but their desire for the money withheld them from that each time…
Oh man I needed a good movie like this one. This will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.
In general I liked this movie though I didn't love it. Especially the characters seem underdeveloped and the first act is quite bland. The movie does really get going though after that. I love the concept. Though not every aspect is taken into account at times which makes its sometimes frustrating.
The acting is good all around, dialog is okay.. there's not much but what there is is not that great.
Music and sound design is top notch though, and you can really tell they focused on that (obviously) and its a joy to listen to on good headphones or in a theater.
To me this movie felt more like a slasher than a horror. Regarding gore, its light. There is one other scene at the end which is pretty damn horrific but not in a gore/kill way, more of a psychopath way.
Lots of people say this movie felt realistic but I really couldn't get with that, its realistic in the sense there are no ghosts or demons. But its got some things that took me out of it.
All in all, not really much else to say. It was enjoyable but not really too interesting after the fact.
"Don't Breathe" is a home invasion thriller that explores the genre from the perspective of the invaders. The story follows three professional thieves who break into the home of a blind man, but soon discover that he is not as vulnerable as they thought. The film effectively uses silence and atmosphere to build suspense and dread throughout the movie, and the performances of the lead actors, especially Stephen Lang as the blind man, are noteworthy. The third act includes some gruesome elements and a thrilling turn of events, making for a satisfying ending. The movie is a short, intense horror experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This was a fun thriller to see
Stephen Lang stars in the intense and frightening horror film Don’t Breathe. When three thieves break into the home of a blind retired veteran, they get more than they bargained for and end up in a fight for their lives. Lang is terrifying in how cold and methodical he is, and Jane Levy is pretty good as a “final girl.” Additionally, director Fede Alvarez brings a lot of tension and suspense to film; making an excellent use of space, giving the house a confining, maze-like feel. However, there’s a morality problem as the girl is greedy, manipulative, and unremorseful, which makes it kind of hard to root for her. Yet despite its problems, Don’t Breathe is an incredibly dark and disturbing film that delivers a lot of chills.
if they had shot or hit the blind man from the beginning, how many problems would have been saved and it is not that sleeping pill, which is worse than the COVID-19 vaccine.
Watch this before the 2nd one as a refresher !!!!
A fantastic thriller. The home invasion starts at the 20th minute and you wonder how are they going to sustain the suspense for 65 minutes and they do. It flies by.
The genre is getting a little watered down so I wasn't sure if this would be good or if it would just be yet another break in and ooooops bit off more than we can chew movie. The element of the guy being blind added to it though and made it fairly decent, but even executed as well as this movie was it's still a story you've seen over and over again. Good movie to have on if you're busy doing something else though and don't need to pay that close of attention.
I can watch the second one now.
Highly recommended crime thriller with horror elements. Just when you think you have things figured out, things take an unexpected turn.
This movie is like Home Alone + A Quiet Place (just kidding). I think the entire movie is great, but the ending makes it worse, so it's a good movie
DON'T BREATHE (2016) REVIEW :boom:

:scroll: Plot : When 3 Robbers plan to Rob a rich blind oldman , things go out of control when the blind man hunts the robbers.
.
:man:⚖ Review : Don't Breathe is one hell of a thriller. Its filled with tension and chilling scenes from the get go. The movie gears up without wasting time and sets the mood of a classic thriller. An simple robbery gone wrong and the after a time you feel sympathy for robbers and root for them to survive after the blind man turns rogue. An Edge of the seat classic from Fede Alvarez where he doesn't focus of jump scares, the horror is rather because of the blind man. Background Sounds of Robbers breathing in fear sends chills down your spine.
Stephen Lang at 64 looks is lethal and brutal as the blind man. Jane Levy shines with a incredible performance with accurate expressions of panic and fear. Dylan as Alex too was very good. A Overall Classic Thriller.

Story where the border between good and evil is blurred. However, a few inaccuracies slightly spoil the reception.
overrated and over-hyped !! i cannot believe the high rating !! i am going to give it 5/10 !
This movie is Unforgettable. Nice concept well executed.
i didnt find anything scary, dont get me wrong it wasent a bad movie at all but not scary
A solid horror movie with a good premise and some decent set pieces. The ending part is gross and kinda makes the movie worse but overall still worth watching.
Better than your average 'people caught in a house' story. No over the top scenes where you have to suspend reality. Good time waster... 7/10
good movie , great direction and editing
meh, cool idea poor execution imo.... lazy writing.
Excellent movie. Great thriller with a touch of horror. Edge of the seat stuff. Watch out for the next instalment.
Excellent thriller. Edge of the seat stuff. Cannot wait for the sequel. Great movie.
I was on the edge of my seat the whole movie... a true horror/thriller at it's best.
What a brilliant movie.
Great performances and especially, great direction by Fede Alvarez!
As long as the movie progresses, we get the feeling that we're watching something that we shouldn't. And full of plot twists that never felt out of place.
This is horror done right, the "jump scares" are effective and done the way should be done.
One of the best horror movies in the recent years.
Second view was interesting. Even the camera tells her own story. The way the camera moves (setting up the next scenes) is brilliant.
Simple concept but perfectly executed. Great movie you should see
A total immersing experience, haven't been "entertained" by a movie like this for years!
Decent horror flick with twists and turns that keep you entertained.
Don't Breathe is definitely a fresh take on a simple horror concept. Fede Alvarez continues to impress with his exceptional direction and the actors defy the odds with very great performances despite long stretches without any dialogue. There are lots of twists and turns throughout the script that work really well but the ending drags the film down a little bit. I feel like Don't Breathe would've been a better movie if it was 80 minutes long instead of 90.
If you call this a horror movie then you may as well call The Muppets 'horror' as well. The idea of a blind man being able to navigate and self defend from threats is cool but this could have been made into a ten minute YouTube short movie. I was so disappointed and really don't have any idea what all the hype is about. I've watched hundreds and hundreds of horror movies and this certainly wasn't one. If you have high expectations, or even mediocre expectations from movies, don't bother. Easily forgettable.
Awesome! Edge of the seat the whole time never got boring but nasty
What a thriller. Left me breathless.
Am never looking at a blind person the same way ever again. Wouldn't call it a horror though.
I find it stupid. one more thing, police didn't even see what's in his basement.. what? i don't understand how people liked this movie so much, there are many plotholes
Generous 7 because the movie manages to be interesting while keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. However, the money hungry film industry manages to ruin a perfectly good movie with an ending that foreshadows a sequel. Cant wait for this to be another Evil Dead.
"if only" ! that's the idea in my mind after watching this movie.
The realisation is very good ! "if only" the actors were too !
The idea is good ! "If only" the scenario was not so predictable.
all I'm gonna say is that I'm so disappointed. so meh... although I suppose many people are ok with this kind of films
I literally held my breathe for almost the entire length of the movie - I have a cold and my nose was blocked. Despite my man flu I enjoyed the film, tense and relentless.
movie have story.is great, surviving and main actor is hot.too many drama. in one moment he die. in next moment he is alive. and in the end my hot actor died is not fair, but for it you got 8 no 9 stars lol
Que locura de películaaaaaa
Despite a cliche ending this was a good movie to watch
Very solid movie! Awesome direcion and good story - it seems to be a low budget film but they did a great job!
even for a 88 minutes movie this dragged out a lot, when you was thinking that it was over, something new happens. It was ok but not that great as everyone thinks off.
Intense thriller! Brilliant movie making! Edge of the seat thriller!!
Excelente pelicula, lleno de suspenso. La trama esta interesante. Te atrapa en todo momento.

Sick, twisted, intense, and scary good. A brilliant concept brilliantly done. Though "horror predictable" during some bits, this movie had me on the edge of my seat for the entire ride as I quite literally held my own breath, fearing with and for the protagonists. A must-see for anyone who loves thrillers.
