They should've called this film People Who Know Dumbo because when you replace the talking animals of the original cartoon with human actors, the movie stops being about Dumbo and more about people's drama. It's sad, actually, because the cartoon about Dumbo had more heart than anyone in this technological display.
The thing that flew away the entire length of the film were my tears. This is the best live action installment of Disney yet due to the very realistic moral to this story. Everything was just right. From the amazing cinematography to the cast and of course the star of the Circus; Dumbo. It makes you realize once more animals aren’t toys or puppets, they have feeling and need their own space.
Watch Dumbo, cry over the cruelty we people bring to these pure beings, smile at the love they give and remember to never ever ride an Elephant in real life.
This looked pretty. It has bright colors and the CGI is solid. Other than that this movie is very mediocre. I didn't really care for any of the characters.
I liked seeing Penny Dreadful in this one, especially when she had to do that act without a net.
I teetered just a little about the ending--- the elephants just go on their way and live away from the circus cuz the circus doesn't deserve them. True enough. But why couldn't they live with the nice circus that loved them without any bad guys being involved? Or is that just naive! So... this worked too.
Not a good recreation and not interesting enough to keep my kids interest if they’re supposed to be the target audience. Stop trying to remake the classics
And this is how you make a cool live action version of a classic Disney film. If someone's kids were not entertained, that's probably because this move is not full of fart jokes and minion nonsense.
Rubbish. Rewritten story and has nothing of the charm of the original. This was one remake that should never have been done.
The movie wasn't entirely about Dumbo, but about the human cast. It felt like Tim Burton re-watched the original 1941, but had only skimmed through it and then changed what made Dumbo a classic. I also wish this was animated with Dumbo's friend mouse and the black crows. The only reason I sat through the entire thing was to give it a fair judgement. If I had seen this in the movie theaters I would have left 20 minutes in.
Let the cobbler stick to his last.
It's not the best movie ever done but it's everything you'd expect from a Disney movie. I am not a huge fan when it comes to re-makes. I'd prefer the animated ones if only for the nostalgic feeling that comes with them. And they show more heart. The style here looks a bit weird at first, which I guess is what Burton was aiming for. But after a couple of minutes you'd barely notice it any more and it really doesn't matter one way or the other. Very well know cast that does it's honest best with what little content there is.
I think at 71 % at the time of writing it's equitably represented. Not a waste of time but not something I'd watch more then once.
One other thing: am I the only one who thought that control tower had a Death Star kind of vibe to it. And the window behind Vandermere? That reminded me also of a certain Emperor sitting in front of a similar one. If that was intentional it's kind of weird to put it into a Dumbo movie don't you think ?
You will believe an elephant can fly but you won't believe a remake can be better. It's perfectly fine family fare, but as other commenters have suggested, by placing a focus on the human cast, the film loses some of its magic.
It’s definitely better than critics made it sound. Despite the plot being stretched out and barely resembling the animated classic. At times.
Dumbo is still a nice Family film either way.
It's been years since I have seen the original Dumbo..So with that being said, this was a great movie
A new telling of the classic tale. And a great movie. Well told story with a great cast. A film for all ages. Nine.
So there’s logic, then there’s Disney logic, then there’s this movies logic. If you can ignore it then it’s actually a okay movie
I loved this film, it was adorable from start to finish! It has a much better and evolved storyline than the original (although that has a lot to do with the war breaking out during the original.) It is visually beautiful and I would recommend.
I think that to like this movie we should first understand the target: children!
I liked It. There are a lot of easter eggs for the lovers of the original Dumbo, and the new story is simple and interesting for a child, with some positive messages.
Great work on CGI, i loved the emotional direction by Tim Burton, nice (but not great at all in my opinion, except one or two tracks ) the soundtracks.
8/10
I thought this movie would be somewhat dumb (SCNR) but while it doesn't really make sense (sure it's a fictional fantasy movie, but still...) I nevertheless enjoyed it for it's emotional story.
Straight off the bat: I do not like the 1941 original, which is one of Disney's weakest animated films in my opinion. So that's worth bearing in mind.
2019's 'Dumbo' surpasses the '41 film with ease, it's admittedly a low bar. There's actually a storyline to this one which is pleasing, while the live-action nature really helps suck me into believing in the - obviously ludicrous - plot. With that noted, it isn't perfect. The pacing is off, while the antagonists are a bit irritating - if suitably cast.
As for the protagonist, Colin Farrell plays his role nicely. Danny DeVito is an obvious but excellent cast for Max Medici, while Michael Keaton and Eva Green suit their roles. Amusing cameo from Michael Buffer too, by the way. As for the kid actors, not great... There is no real human appearance in the first film, so this one had to create one from scratch and I think they did a good job.
Dumbo is super cute, just as before, and his story is undoubtedly hearty; which are arguably the only things that the 40s film did right.
Overall, I liked this remake.
JUST WASN'T FEELING THIS ONE, LACKED THE MAGIC AND CHARM OF THE ORIGINAL. NO SINGING, MOTHER DIDN'T DIE AND FOCUSED TO MUCH ON THE HUMANS ARE AS I CALL IT THE GODZILLA SYNDROME
THERE WAS NOTHING TO GET ME IN THE FEELS, YOU CAN ONLY GO SO FAR WITH CUTE DUMBO AND A FEATHER,
WHERE AS BABY YODA I
COULD WATCH ALL DAY LONG
AND IN MY OPINION HAD WAY MORE PERSONALITY AND KEEPS MY INTEREST WAY LONGER. THIS JUST WASN'T MAGICAL ENOUGH FOR ME
I'LL TAKE THE
GREATEST SHOW MAN
ANY DAY OVER THIS
POOR MANS ONE.
THEY SHOULD HAVE LEFT THIS ONE ALONE.
LIVE ACTION MORE LIKE
DODGY CGI
I could see the strings
if you will
This was nothing but a cash grab
and felt a little bit forced
as someone who was obsessed with old dumbo as a kid and was really disappointed by no talking elephants and drunk mice, I'm giving it a 6 only for one reason: the fucking scene where one handed Colin Farell tries to pick up a burning rag in the middle of the burning circus (!!!) in a heroic attempt to snuff out the flames and gets burnt after a second
a pure 10 on the scale of stupidness
Enough with the Disney live action remakes already...
From director Tim Burton comes the whimsical fantasy adventure Dumbo, a live-action adaptation of the Disney animated classic. When a baby elephant with abnormally large ears learns how to fly he proves to be a boom to a failing circus, which is then invited to join a Coney Island amusement park; but they soon discover that the park is not as welcoming as it seems. Featuring Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Michael Keaton, the cast is quite impressive and delivers some good performances. And Burton does an impressive job at creating a surrealistic, fairy tale-esque atmosphere; which of course is helped out by Danny Elfman’s wonderful score. It’s a little dark and edgier than the original (crows notwithstanding), but Dumbo delivers the same magic.
This one felt completely unnecessary. I'm not sure why they even made this one. Overall it was really forgettable. I thought Dumbo looked really nice though, the technology is really amazing. The story, however, is really boring.
Never seen the original but really loved this live-action version.
I liked that this movie, rather than being a retelling of the old, embeds it and tells a new story. Which is in my opinion a far better use of reusing old tales just for the sake of bringing them back on screen. The degree of photo realism is right too — the animals are let be animals, albeit very smart ones, with most of their expression in their eyes. It works well here. (Plus, Dumbo is so adorable!)
What I didn’t like is forcing romance into it.
And my biggest pet peeve is one little thing really, but it almost drove me mad haha: at some point they take a photo of dumbo with an old analogue camera, and in the papers the next day there’s an extremely pixlated crop of it. PIXLS. Come on!!! You had like ONE JOB. Could they not afford one little print for their movie?
Had a fun time watching it but it didn't have the same effect like the original did. But I guess both movies have their own charms. Personality got irritated by the kids, they don't belong lol
Dumbo, to me was a bit of a disappointment. the animation throughout was great, but the acting and execution were just 'meh'.
I know that Disney wanted to make it more realistic than showing a talking elephant, but seemed to forget that the original Dumbo's talking elephant was what gave it charm.
If someone is buying a Dumbo movie for their children to grow up with, the original is a much better movie and has so much more character than this remake, that honestly, didn't have any reason to be made.
Some of the cinematography was great, and brought me back to when Tim Burton filmed 'Big Fish', but I feel like being a movie based on a circus, they could have made it more visually stunning and much more grandiose. I don't know if this was Burton's fault or that Disney did not want to overspend on the CGI to build out deeper environments.
Also, the acting and script at times were downright terrible, with two of the best actors of the movie not appearing until 3/4th of the way in.
I wouldn't say that I am mad that I watched it, but there are much better ways to spend your time.
Feels like the most recent sincere Tim Burton movie.
I never enjoyed watching Dumbo because it was always so freaking sad, and the live-action is no exception; the first forty minutes are truly heartbreaking. That said, I very much appreciate the new ending thanks to the happy circus arc as well as the typical, action-filled caper that is literally the only part of this movie that didn't have me in tears.
On a lighter note, my favorite quote from the film: "No booze near the baby!"
I think this is a great movie for children to see as this movie highlights the struggle between greed and compassion. A wonderful movie that gets lost in the other stories surrounding Dumbo. But even so this movie is good as it highlights the cruelty dished out to all these voiceless souls.
Didn't turn out to be a big cash grabber as Disney had expected, But i think Tim Burton did his best. Twas a decent movie (so much better than Alice in wonderland)
Charming and visually impressive but not so big on heart.
