Watched it yesterday after a long time. It was a lot cooler movie 20 years ago. Now its not that good.
Why did he smash the window? The back was made of cloth.
"I'm sorry... we trespassed on your... fucking territory. God! I'm sorry! Isn't that enough?"
Maybe I went into Flatliners expecting a bit too much? Because to me it felt drawn out, the movie could've been 20 minutes shorter and I hoped that Nelson (Kiefer Sutherland) would've stayed dead.
Anyway I really like the premise of Flatliners, I really enjoy the cast and it is beautifully fully shot but I can't shake the feeling that I felt bored watching it. I even fell asleep near the one-hour mark. It feels so ambitious but it never really packs the punch I think it wants to.
If you enjoy the cast it might be worth a watch. Maybe I wasn't totally in the mood for it and that is why it felt so boring but I don't think I'll rewatch this one anytime soon.
Such a shame, I wanted to like this so much.
I had high hopes for this movie because I love the concept of it. Sadly the movie is somewhat poorly executed and the acting is pretty bad and the dialogues are cheesy. The story is also majorly dissapointing at times. They had a few good ideas though, and the movie actually has some intense parts. But it doesn't last very long.
After death we meet our own fans.
I've seen this movie like ten times. I always think it has a very good plot but it was poorly executed. I don't like how the problems were solved.
Never been to medical school but I can imagine this is very removed from reality. This is more a style piece. It's a very dark movie and I mean that literally. It's so dark it doesn't make much sense like the ultra grainy camera that would be unusable and the poorly lit medical area that looks like it's a church, but I guess it's faithful to the style. There are religious and supernatural elements thrown in to increase the overall horror in a cheap way. One day even lands on Halloween.
I think the idea alone makes the movie interesting enough to keep bringing you back from the brink of cinematic deathfor the first half. The second half is chasing some mediocre demons. Keifer was always a great choice for dark twisted characters. Bacon is OK but the rest are forgettable. I don't understand the competitive bidding times for the next death experience. I know it's to make the movie more intense but it made the medical students seems even more stupid. The idea that you get haunted by the past if you die is also stupid as it's presented in a way that you'd reason nobody has ever experienced this before but this wouldn't be the case as people have died and come back before. This movie wears it's cheapness proud which helps in overcoming it. This movie can be enjoyable at times if you experience it rather than analyse it. Yes it's stupid but it's style over substance in a way that isn't pretentious but dream like.
It's been a while since I saw this. The film is a product of its time. A light horror thriller. There is the usual popular cast. But the characters are superficial. Kiefer Sutherland does a lot with what little he got from the script. The rest is rather pale.
The story is not breathtaking. The whole thing is not really scientifically oriented. It's more about religion. Atonement for your sins and everything will be fine. And that's not really something for me. Oh, and did I mention that two characters end up in bed. Which has absolutely nothing to do with the plot, but is almost a necessity as it seems.
But I have to admit that I liked the movie when I saw it in the cinema. The message, somehow, did not bother me at all then.
So a 7 originally and a 5 now translates into a 6 today.
