a subgenre of science fiction in a future setting that tends to focus on society as "high tech low life" featuring advanced technological and scientific achievements, such as information technology and cybernetics, juxtaposed with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order
Let me know if it's missing something (important :)).
Anime movies
Anime movies that I love and find impressive in some way.
"As cybernetic technology advances, criminal activities are becoming daily common occurrences. For Chief Aramaki and his ELITE squad, Section 9, they are the only ones with the means to put an end to cyber terrorism. Join Togusa, Ishikawa, The Major, Batou, Tachikomas, and the rest of the Section 9 team through a intellectual roller coaster ride in the 21st century."
Was about freaking time to make this list.
Rank is recommended order to watch I found on some site.
Added date is sorted chronologically.
Personally I'd watch the first two movies first, then SAC, then Arise.
But actually it doesn't matter that much cause the first two movies are their own universe, The Stand Alone Complex is its own universe, and Arise is its own universe, tho as far as I know it's better to watch Arise at last.
We will ignore 2.0., Arise Alternative Architecture, and we will definitely for sure as fuck ignore the live action.
The 2045 show did not got much good ratings so far, as I didn't watched it yet, maybe it's something to ignore in the future too.
Mostly are different set up, but this is the order i normally watch and have more fun and makes more sense to me,,, for example The original Movie probably should be watch before the series S.A.C. but for me makes more sense to watch it after SSS...

In chronological order. Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is a reanimation of the original. Laughing Man is a movie version of the first season of the SAC show and Individual Eleven is the movie for the second. The Arise movies and shows are literally the same just in different architectures.
Viewing order based on the /r/anime subreddit wiki.
