[Apple TV+] Fighting in the Atlantic. A war movie in which there is no respite. Tom Hanks' script doesn't leave room for much more either. The combat scenes at sea are well directed. No character development. The dramatic arc of the protagonist is null. The other aspects of the film work with correction. A forgettable movie.
Technically marvelous but I felt nothing watching this. No thrills, no suspense, nada.
Yeah I'd rather just re-watch Dunkirk.
Just a forgettable military movie. It probably would of been better on the big screen than at home.
Being ex-Navy and having sailed the same waters, I can appreciate the difficulty experienced by the captain and crew of the Greyhound; the North Atlantic is a treacherous enough sea even without being fired upon by enemy vessels intent upon ending your life and your ship's service.
No, this was not engaging at all.
I didn't get involved with the characters, not even Tom Hanks.
Didn't find it suspenseful either.
Give me Das Boot anyday.
Great film that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole runtime. As always superb acting by Tom Hanks and brilliant intense soundtrack.
a very down to earth flick-it was hell making the crossing of "The Pit"
Wasn't expecting that - it was one long action scene. Outstanding sound mixing too.
I will watch anything with Tom Hanks. And he never disappoints!!
Dialogue is all navy jargon and not accessible/interesting. I thought the graphics looked like a computer game and they did nothing for me. Overall I was bored.
WoW! just wow! Tom Hank is and always will be legend.
Greyhound is an exceptional historical movie that offers a thrilling and intense portrayal of the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II. Tom Hanks delivers a powerful performance as the commanding officer of a US Navy destroyer, leading his crew through dangerous waters and battling German U-boats. The film's attention to detail and historical accuracy make it an excellent representation of the era and the naval warfare of the time. The action sequences are intense and engaging, and the film's pacing keeps the audience invested in the story.
Always great movies by Tom Hanks.
The cinematography, the acting, the score, it all delivers. The trailer left an impression that it would be just another 'Merica back to back world war champs type of movie, probably by design to draw people to watch it. It was unnecessary. The story may be simple, but it's the perspective from which it is told that makes the movie superb. Hanks wrote a hell of a movie which was executed quite well for a relatively inexperienced director.
Meet her.
It only takes 2 minutes to start the action and it does not stop in this fight between convoy attackers and convoy defenders. Keeps you tense until the end
I can understand the bad reviews. This passes a perfect image about the difficulty to pass the Atlantic Ocean during ww2
I just there were more dramatic scenes of the sounds of nazis drowning. Other than that, this movie is the best film of 2020 so far.
I don't know what it is about battleships and naval war, but I love it! Even though, I barely understand maybe a third of what's being said (I'm not even remotely fluent in naval battleship jargon), and war is no joke, I find battles at sea to be fascinating. Maybe it's the fact that when you're on a ship, you have nowhere to go and every single thing fired at you could be your end. High stakes make for compelling fiction.
Watching this reminded me of the adrenaline rush I got during those wonderful first and second seasons of TNT's The Last Ship. Good times.
I Always Jump At A Chance To See Tom Hanks In Any Movie, Even Though I Have Had My Fill Of WWII Movies This One Was Slightly Different - Captain Of Battle Ship Greyhound Leading A Convoy Across The Atlantic For The First Time, And Unknown To Him They Are Being Hunted By The German U-Boats - The Most Complex Naval Battle In History Becoming Known As The Battle Of The Atlantic With Amazing Battle Scenes Throughout The Movie - But It Doesn't Movie You Like You Would Expect It To - Granted The Characters Were Thinly Written And The Plot Was Barely There But Tom Hanks Was Stellar And Carried This Film His Shoulders Making It An Entertaining Movie And Definitely Worth A Watch
Very good movie, Tom Hanks excellent as usual. Harrowing story of the Atlantic Ocean Crossing during WW2. Visually very good, good suspense as the Wolfpack closes in and The convoy tries to avoid the UBoats as the American and British destroyers fight back.
As a gigantic fan of Das Boot I had high hopes for this one and certainly didn't expect it to be a pure action flick. The fight scenes are nicely made but the stuff in between feels forced and the tempo of the whole movie is off. The wife scenes could've been skipped completely since they added nothing and the last 1/5 is way to stressed. Biggest disappointment of the year so far.
This movie had more potential. As it stands, it is just an action flick. There is no emotional investment. I know the story of the Atlantic convoys and what those men went through, because of my interest in WWII history. Here they are just names. Their deaths has no weight in relation to the story much like in other action movies.
I would have really liked the German Uboat captain not only being a voice but a person and us watching the action from his side. That way it could have been more engaging. They are just nameless, which doesn't quite fit with Krause's reaction when he sank the first uboat. I haven't read the book but from what I gather it was dealing much more with his personality.
CGI looks like a 50m $ movie and that is not nessessarily a compliment. On the first shot you can see it's a low budget movie. And let's be honest in that regard for that kind of movie it is low.
Considering the hardship of those men they deserved more then a mid-level action movie. The last scene and the credits try to pay homage but it falls flat because of the aforementioned missing emotional investment.
Not a bad movie in itself but, from where I stand, missing the point.
Tom Hanks can elevate even the most mediocre movies.
Look at me! I'm the captain now!
The other side of "Das Boot". Quite enjoyable, not a masterpiece, but a nice movie about the cat & mouse game in the Atlantic between a convoy' its lead destroyer and a pack of U boots, with the cold, the waiting, the tiredness. And Tom Hanks playing Tom Hanks at the helm.
Non-stop thriller. Good story
Dramatization? Spectacle? No. This movie allowed me to experience WW2 naval combat without the bombast of the usual action movie. It felt realistic with a decent amount of suspense, a glimpse through the eyes of the captain.
Look I don't like American propaganda movies as much as the next guy but this is World War 2. We didn't start this conflict so show me any dramatized version of any story from that conflict and I'll eat it up. Tom Hanks to? Yes, please. Intense movie to watch and I liked the sound effects used for the wolfpack. Didn't mind watching at home in 4k with HDR and Atmos sound. Refreshing to see the Atlantic naval battles portrayed as well.
Apple TV+ gave 70m for this? Not worth it, they would better do buying some start-up.
so incredibly dull
just...dull
Solid movie. Not exceptional, not poor. Just really solid.
It rises and falls on the magnetism and humanity of Tom Hanks. That he wrote the screenplay should be set aside for a moment for unbiased criticism.
The plot is slight. It's got a little bookend story to give it some heart but I found it a little insubstantial - though it was lovely to see Elisabeth Shue back on the silver screen.
The tension and action is excellent for what it is. It drips with CG and this isn't Marvel budgets. But it is very effective for what it is.
It clocks in at 90 minutes and I feel there's about 10 minutes of fat in there. I'd have liked more of the romance/love-story to be fleshed out at the end to make better use of the time.
What goes without saying is that it is a very worthy and honourable dedication to the brave young men who fought during WWII. Amazing courage amidst horrendous situations.
Worthwhile but ultimately slight.
7/10
Showing the art of naval combat during the WWII. This movie is great. The soundtrack superb. Tom Hanks commands in this movie. I praise it much.
a really common one that didn’t impress me a lot
Descent movie, action the whole way although the crossing is a bit dramatized but fair depiction none the less
Solid, torpedo flinging action sir
If this were a novel, this would definitely be considered a "short story". The transition to the big screen, however, in no way suffered from the brevity of this story/movie; almost from the beginning, this was an edge-of-your-seat riveting movie that played at every emotion. The cruel cat-and-mouse game between the hunter and the hunted had you wondering how this was going to turn out. Tom Hanks is, of course, one of my favorite actors, and even in a considerably stoic role like this, he still managed to exude that aura of emotion that makes him one of the greats. While Greyhound is not based on a true story, or on actual events, it's still a great movie that displays the tragic price of American freedom that is paid by so many brave men and women willing to risk their own lives. Highly recommend watching this one.
so predictable, and to be honest save your self 80 mins of your life and stick with the trailer, its basically the whole film with best bits anyway. Also for a war film the surround sound is woefully under baked, poxy. its like a 1990 dolby prologic track very very little rear or over head channels. I see tom hanks wrote the script....umm well he's a much better actor then he is a writer, so Tom stick to the day job.....
Tom Hanks leads the cast in the WWII drama Greyhound. The story follows a U.S. Navy commander who leads an Allied convoy across the Atlantic Ocean as they are attacked from German submarines. Hanks gives a strong performance and the effects work is really good; make for some impressive naval battles. However, the battles can be a little hard to follow, as there’s a lot of technical jargon and at times it’s unclear which ships are which. Yet while it has its problems, Greyhound is a compelling and powerful film about the dangerous that the Allies faced in just getting to the battlefield.
Tom Hanks does it again. He makes anything he is in worth watching.
The movie could’ve been better, it was an action movie for sure but there wasn’t much going on in terms of dialogue. Most of the script was basically commands and repeating the same commands over and over.
Reminds me of the time I watch horror movies with only scares/jump scares and no story.
It’s an average film that you’ll watch once and forget about later on.
The performances and action are fine. There’s just nothing more to it. Than a short movie about a ship versus a submarine.
I have a really hard time watching anything with Hanx in it knowing what he is involved in.
The film very much feels like someone decided to use a video game to show the horrors of crossing the Atlantic during the first few years of World War 2. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire movie. I think it was smart to have the movie wrap up into a tight 90 minutes instead of trying to make it into an epic. While the movie is quick and intense from an enjoyment perspective it unfortunately has the soul of a video game and not a movie.

This was an interesting insight into a small piece of WWII. However, the suspense, the thrill, the drama was missing.
I have played Battleship games that were most exciting than this. It's a commendable effort but the small screen sinks any hope of drama and excitement.
It's not a good movie, but not a bad one, the only actors I've ever met were Tom Hanks and Dave Davis from Bomb City. The action is only at the end, at the beginning there is continuous talk "we change route 4" only these lines. The visual effects are a bit missing. It would have been better if it had been longer, it lasted only an hour and 25.
Tom Hanks delivers. Some scenes take some risks (flag). But that's it. The germans houling on radio. What? This sounds so strange.
Anyway, even if this is not Jeremy Jahns review, my review-result says: "You will forget this movie in T-Minus One Day. Yeaaah, already forgot."
This was too short and half baked. Needed more dialog and reflection.
GREYHOUND (2020) REVIEW
.
.
:scroll: Plot: A first-time captain leads a convoy of allied ships carrying thousands of soldiers and cargo across the treacherous waters of the "Black Pit" to the front lines of WW2. With no air cover protection for 5 days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy Nazi U-boats in order to give the allies a chance to win the war.
.
.
:man:⚖ Review : Greyhound is serious, well intensioned war drama filled with intricate details of tension , communication and way of war on oceans. The movie is another clear reminder of the losses of war that the world has faced during the World War 2.
The Screenplay and VFX with an intriguing BGM sets the mood of an thrilling battle between the German U Boats and the US convoys in the beginning. Tom Hanks is unflinching as a first time captain of US Convoy named Greyhound. He leads the command and is outstanding to say the least. He lives the character.
But the movie having so much action, feels souless and lacks the dynamics which makes you feel the tension. The Set pieces become repetitive and the mometum which it gained intially fades down rapidly.
.
.
:thumbsup:Goods : Tom Hank's performance is superlative, Brilliant VFX and BGM, Reflects realistic battle on Oceans.
.
.
 Bads : Repetitive Set Pieces, Fails to make an impact with the audience.
.
.
:fire: Final Rating : 6.5/10
.
.
:white_check_mark: Verdict : Overall Greyhound is decent watch with an outstanding protagonist at the helm. If you love Tom Hanks you can give it a shot.

Like most Navy movies, extremely boring. Lots of talking and yelling out gibberish that means nothing to someone who was never in the Navy.
This just proves how boring history can be lol. Much better WWII movies out there then this crap.
I found myself just wishing it would be over already.
What a dumb movie....
I'd rather go to the dentist then ever be subjected to this crap again.
You have lost your A list status in my mind Tom Hanks. You have sucked for years now...
The most interesting thing in this movie was "messenger 2" in the cast lol. I haven't seen that guy in anything since 90s sitcoms lol.
For Tom Hanks next big movie, it's gonna be a documentary about the planes that brought the soldiers to Iraq. I expect it to be equally as boring.....
Opposite side of Uboot alike movie. Tom Hanks shines as allways and gives it a +1.
A thrilling good movie. Super performance by Tom Hanks as usual.
I had been looking forward to this and I enjoyed it. It's not nearly as good as Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers but I'd watch this any day over Dunkirk.
Well this one looks pretty damn good :man_shrugging_tone1:

And once again the freshly baked, first-time captain is the American Hero saving the day and awing the world against the bad, evil Kriegsmarine, which, as we all know, only consisted of sadistic Nazis howling over radio like a delirious drunken man while engaging the enemy. Straight historic facts.
And obviously the captain has a soft spot for the coloured cook Cleveland, who tragically parishes in an attack. Except the fact that the navy didn't allow coloured people on their ships until 1948 while this cheap propaganda piece is set in 1942. Except the Kriegsmarine was known to be the least Nazified service in the German war machine.
Why the directors/writers of cheesy sh*t like this always try to rewrite history, I don't know.
Seriously, watch "Das Boot" or "The Enemy Below". Don't waste your time with this garbage.
