It is a shame that the Jack Ryan character has not produced a consistent series of films that allows the character to develop - Harrison Ford's films come the closest but instead we have another reboot. And so whilst Pine is ideal for the role the constant need to reboot or recast has left these films as standalone entries - here is hoping we may get further entries that add more depth and character development as this is perfectly adequate as an opening instalment to introduce the character again if you dismiss the previous films, yet also somewhat generic and slight as a spy thriller. However, the film never outstays it's welcome and there are some great race-against-the-clock sequences that are enjoyable. The three main leads are fine, especially Costner who seems to have reinvented himself as the mentor figure these days. The one huge misstep is involving Ryan's wife in the main plot as it strains credibility, though it does lead to two good set piece moments in the film.
Not realistic at all but I must admit that it was quite enjoyable nonetheless :)
However, they really quite overdid it towards the end (the Americans completely failing to protect Cathy, the Russians completely failing to kidnap her, the extremely fast information gathering during their flight back to America, Ryan driving or rather crashing (multiple times!) a van with a bomb, etc.). Cathy basically not being scared at all was also super unrealistic but at least her being so badass was quite enjoyable (especially during the dinner) so I'm fine with that.

Tom Clancy deserves a better movie... This is just average combined with US propaganda.

It's crazy how you can have so many big names yet it feels like a TV Movie on a Saturday afternoon. There are some cool scenes but overall just felt average.

This film was lackluster in pretty much every department. The only thing in its favor was that it's a major one with a high budget and big names. I feel that's worse, in a way, as opposed to films with low budgets because you'd expect most films with low budgets to be flawed; when the budget is high, but everything else is lackluster, the disconnect is huge. I almost wish this was a film that's so extraordinarily bad but in a good way, which is how I imagine I'd feel with low-budget films hardly anyone knows about that has 'bad everything.'
Chris Pine's performance was very similar to his performance in This Means War, minus the sarcastic playboy/comedic element: and that was super noticeable, which I thought didn't fit the character. The acting itself was decent, especially the scene where he got back up clutching unto the crutch; that didn't seem Chris Pine-esque at all.
That said, his performance gave the impression that he phoned it in or is one of those actors that always seems to be playing the same character, whether due to the roles he chooses or because he doesn't have much range.
John Krasinski's portrayal of Jack Ryan is quite different. Then again, I've only watched him in that show and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, and I suppose both acting performances seemed similar, too. I guess it's just a matter of not having a wide range, both Chris Pine and John Krasinski.
The performances by Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley were alright. Nothing noteworthy. Her American accent was surprising: and decent, I guess. I'm used to her authentic accent because of Elizabeth Swann. I will say this: the way she enunciates sometimes, or something along those lines, is borderline uncanny (with a certain charm), although it fits with her authentic accent quite well: here, not so much.
I thought Kenneth Branagh's performance was the stand-out. Something about it seemed "good," specifically "better." His acting, I mean. His Russian accent sounded like the Russian accent of Armie Hammer in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., so I'll assume it wasn't a good one. Besides that, Kenneth's performance was probably the best in the film.
The score by Patrick Doyle was probably the only good thing. Well, I guess the production value and cinematography by Haris Zambarloukos were good, too. But everything else was lackluster, so that could've elevated it higher. Even though I feel like the score was one of the only good things, the more I think about it, the more it seems to have been lackluster.
The editing and pacing were fast for the most part. And while I'm somewhat indifferent towards that, the first 10-33 minutes of the film were quite good, both pacing and direction, further complimented by the slower pacing/the atmosphere built up. But once everything got going, it was going fast, not to mention what was happening didn't necessarily make up for it. What should've been the meat of the film, beyond literalism (if that makes sense), was the complete opposite. It was very lackluster.
Overall, this film wasn't good enough. And it was even worse, given that it's a film about a Tom Clancy character, one of his most iconic characters. But it didn't adopt a particular novel; the story was original. All you have to do is make everything original if you're going to do that instead of creating an adaptation without the whole meaning. Adapting a particular novel well seems too complex a task anyway. At least you'd have the excuse of everything being original despite not delivering fully.

But there are some pacing issues, causing the film to lag and lose momentum. As a reboot Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit works and delivers some thrills, but it doesn’t live up to the previous installment of the franchise.
It starts without an explanation of the context,the first hour is a completely hole where the story is slow and there isn't a deep analysis of the characters interior,the plot is ordinary and similar to a lot of other actions movies,a lot of times in the movie you can't really understand what's going on and the final is exaggerated.
The movie overall is fine to pass 2 hours,but don't expect to be fascineted by it.

A very generic and forgetful action spy movie. I like Chris Pine but this is not his best role.

Better than the others
Straightforward action thriller without tons of CGI stuff.
But don't compare it with Clancys books because this is only based on characters.

This movie is entertaining. Pine plays a good Jack Ryan and Keira Knightley is as gorgeous as every but her american accent isn't the best - they should have found a way to adapted the story to allow her to speak in her normal accent. I would be interested in seeing more of Pine in the Jack Ryan character.
I've never seen a Jack Ryan's movie before, so I can't compare to the others. But Chris Pine is Jack Ryan here, so I decided to see. Great actions scenes, very well done. It's not an innovative script, but it's a good story that keeps us till the end. I can't forget about the cute love story and the funny dialogues that breaks the ice of the movie. I love Chris Pine and it's clear to see how he's grown as an actor. Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and, the director who also acts, Kenneth Branagh, made an amazing job. Great movie to see.

well, i don´t know the book work so i have nothing to compare and most bad critics are from the people that know it. has an action/spy movie it´s entertaining in my opinion =) better than i expected.

A decent film. If you want an example of a good thriller go and watch the first three Bourne films. This is entertaining and you'll end up enjoying it while you're watching it, but it's bland and forgetful.
