it portrays very well how it should be to be there. Good for the actors

“Every war is different. Every war is the same.” From director Sam Mendes comes the compelling war drama Jarhead. Based on a memoir by Anthony Swofford, the film follows Swofford as he joins the Marines and is recruited to be a sniper, but he soon finds himself stationed in Saudi Arabian as part of Operation Desert Shield endlessly waiting to see action. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, Peter Sarsgaard, Lucas Black, and Chris Cooper, a film features a strong cast that gives good performances. And Mendes does a great job at capturing the isolation and beauty of the desert, and at showing the horrors of war. Additionally, Thomas Newman provides a terrific score. Yet at times the film gets a little crass and vulgar, but it’s also incredible honest. While it has some problems, Jarhead is a powerful look at the life of a soldier.

A war movie without a war. Not much action or fighting scenes. It´s more about fighting boredom than the enemy and I don´t mean it as a negative. The movie is solid but not exceptional.
One thing I always ask myself after watching those newer war movies: do marines really behave like that?

Jarhead took me by surprise with its unique portrayal of wartime experiences. Unlike traditional war movies filled with plenty of action, it dives deep into the emotional and psychological impact of war on soldiers. It's not what I was expecting, but that's what makes it stand out. Rather than focusing on adrenaline-pumping battle scenes, the film delves into the mundane and monotonous aspects of war, showing how it can be a psychological challenge for soldiers. It offers a raw and realistic portrayal of the toll it takes on their mental and emotional well-being. This unconventional approach brings a unique perspective to the war genre. It's worth a watch for those seeking a different perspective on war.

A different type of war movie that's not totally what I was expecting. Jake Gyllenhaal is pretty good and the depiction of boredom was interesting.
