It's Rowan Atkinson so what more can I say? It was a funny movie with some really great "Mr. Bean" moments. The rest of the people were ok, nothing really super. Recommended when needed a comedy movie.
Although it was a little slow to begin with, I was not disappointed at all by this film. As soon as I heard there was a new one, I kept an open mind and told myself that: "If it makes me laugh as much as the first and second, then I will be happy", and thankfully, it certainly did! If I was going to pick between the three, I'd still slightly prefer the second one, but I don't really think we should be comparing them. Why not enjoy them all? I certainly have.
As with all of Rowan Atkinson's comic creations, Johnny English is a hilarious character who can simply be funny in an empty room. So many people discuss his physical ability, which is of course outstanding, but even his ability to phrase words for comical effect can brighten anybody's day. There are so many subtle gags in this film, it's unbelievable.
I loved the return of Bough as his sidekick. He plays an excellent part in both the first one and this new one. His character is equally as brilliant as Johnny English himself.
A wonderful film, filled with brilliant comedy, and there were moments when I didn't think I'd be able to stop laughing. It was fantastic!
the movie is sometimes a little stupid, has cheap cgi, nonexistent story but I laughed anyway
I remember the earlier movies in this series being worth a watch. This time, though, the jokes seem to be even lazier than I remember.
Set up: Johnny needs to do X.
Punchline: Johnny fails to do X (but plot advances anyway).
Rinse, repeat.
The beginning of the movie (at the school) was actually a highlight for me, as one of the few parts of the movie where the jokes were something other than the repetitive jokes about Johnny's incompetence that burned me out half way into the film.
Well it wasn’t anything great, had the same old gags, story and some characters were a little cheesy, few new ideas but didn’t fail to make me laugh at moments specially the dancing scene and I think it had most of the best parts in It’s trailer.
I think they should of ended it with the first film of the franchise because they’ve not done any better, they always try too hard with later franchie sqeuals, always rush them, not all thought, some can turn out good but for some in the end it becomes too cheesy for me.
It’s a shame that he pronounced a few days back that he wasn’t gonna do anymore mr bean, understandable from the point of his last film (holiday) because it was terrible and has nothing on the first, just another cheesy rushed film without enough work put into it but I still think he’s got it still for a mr bean mini series or christmas special seeing as you could notice all the way through this film mr bean coming out in his character and don’t get me wrong, he did great, the film just didn’t live up to his talent in my opinion.
A very good British comedy. Has all the elements I loved from the first film, including his trusty sidekick. Very funny, props to Rowan Atkinson for being able to keep it up!
Honestly, it is as if they said, you have no budget for effects, casting and storyline. They turned JE into a Bozo and at no point does th 'Strikes Again' conenct or reflect on JE's previous endeavours and successful outcomes of the previous two movies.
I get the whole, Johnny meets technology however, JE previously used advanced technology successful in the previous movies. So it just doesnt make sense.
Rowan tries his best to carry the third act of JE but, he has too many negatives to combat.
First of all , I love the Johnny English movies. The thing I liked about them was that both the previous movies had jokes in pretty much every scene. Basically a scene could seem completely normal and have some little detail in the background or a joke that you'd get if you watched these films twice or more. Not that I'm trying to say that the Johnny English films are some super sophisticated comedy that you need to use your 300 iq to understand but it is clear that they were intended to be watched more than once if you want to get every little detail. A good example of this is the opening scene in the first movie where johnny gets lost in the MI7 while the viewer probably focuses more on the music or the titles. All this attention to detail, combined with a good standard plot and jokes that actually worked made these series the perfect comedy ,at least for me.Which is why I always couldn't get why critics and audience alike didn't think very highly of them and considered them as just bellow mediocre comedies. So after spending all this time talking about the other films , the only thing I can say about this one is that it just felt empty. What you saw was exactly what you got and for the first time rewatching it isn't even worth it (even though I'm not 100% sure about that but its highly unlikely). Most of the jokes were flat or reused from the first movie and the "villain" felt like just a high tech version of Pascal Sauvage. It's really a shame when the thing that made me laugh the most was that VR scene, that I had already seen from the trailer. They also felt the need for some reason to use that roblox "oof" sound effect when they were at that restaurant and Johnny was trying to take the shell of that lobster (there was also darude sandstorm but whatever ). Even though this might not be the best review of this movie because it's closer to a rant , my last thoughts on it are that it was just rushed , empty and mostly uninteresting. Its really not a bad movie on its own but it just fails to compete with the other two.
Really liked this one. Sort of reminded me of good old Naked gun movies.. where humor is not pure taste fart jokes but rather some sort of misunderstanding
Maybe it just a case of one too many but somehow watching this I felt this one was the weakest of them. Did care much for the Villain or the PM, it's a step down from the previous one. Quite frankly, this one felt rushed.
That being side, it does deliver on the things you'd expect from a Rowan Atkinson movie, the laughs are less but there nonetheless. His man was brilliant and quite frankly one of the things I loved about this movie. I would've loved to see Olga in a few more scenes. The VR scene was also good.
It looked like it was going to be stupid and it was, so I guess that means it was a success. If you go in hating it more than you should you might end up liking it more than you thought. Plus I laughed out loud more than once, so...
Excellent movie, Rowan Atkinson at his best. Too bad the "psychologist" did not return. Neither did Gillian Anderson. But it's still a great movie, worth watching.
Johnny English does it again, you get exactly what you expect. Very good family film and worth watching.
I never expected to say this, but Rowan Atkinson dancing to Darude's Sandstorm is probably one of the best things you will ever see in your life!!!
Great British comedy at its finest (or there abouts). This was a great, funny, movie with some fantastic laugh out loud moments and even more subtle ones. It includes all of the classic elements of the original two, even Bough! You'll enjoy this movie if you like Rowan's previous works and should just accept it for what it is. A 90 minute roller coaster ride of slapstic comedy, and for that - it really does deliver.
That vr scene makes this movie honestly. Other than that the story is too ridiculous and the humor is just the same as the first johnny English. Still funny as hell tho
7/10
Nothing that hasn't been said already. It's a wonderful movie. Funny. Entertaining. Stupid. Silly. Smart too.
Loved it.
A really good movie. Must watch for Rowan fans.
I enjoyed the first Johnny English, the second one... Ehhhh? Okay at best. I went into Johnny English Strikes Again with really low expectations, but I found myself pleasantly surprised.
Is it a good movie? No. None of these movies are inherently "good", per se. But man, I had a fun time! A lot of the dumb gags actually got me laughing, and the bad guy, while predictable, is fun (the actor who plays him seems to be having a good time hamming it up). It is weird that they mention his age in a roundabout way at the beginning (Rowan Atkinson was 63 at the time), but then never remark on how he's hitting on a woman far younger than him. Also, cringe dancing montage is cringe.
Other than that, I had a pretty good time all around. Looking forward to Johnny English Returns, coming out in 2026 (if the release trend continues in the same way).
There's an argument to be made that Rowan Atkinson's comedy is perhaps the most universal of them all. His comedic schtick relies largely on slapstick, which due to its visual nature bypasses any language barriers across foreign land. So it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that the Johnny English franchise has been successful enough to warrant a complete trilogy of three films.
The third entry, Johnny English Strikes Again, is probably the one with the flimsiest plot. This instalment revolves around a Theresa May-esque prime minister (played brilliantly by Emma Thompson) discovering that the UK has been the victim of a string of cyber-attacks; naturally, it is up to Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) and his partner Bough (Ben Miller) to save the day. It's quite a basic story, and the villain - tech genius Jason Volta (Jake Lacy) - is obvious from the very start. It's about as predictable as you can get.
It's also a little muddled, with some scenes that don't seem to advance the narrative at all. For instance, I am still not entirely sure what the point was in having Johnny and Bough to investigate the villain's yacht, only to get caught straight away by Ophelia (Olga Kurylenko), who is later revealed to be a Russian spy. It's an entirely pointless scene without even a trace of peril, as they successfully manage to escape three minutes later anyway, and are barely any closer to solving the mission. All that they achieve from trying to sneak on the boat is discovering that Ophelia knows something about the cyber-attacks occurring across London.
The reveal that Ophelia is a Russian spy also doesn't quite work. Whilst it's very clearly signposted that she is a spy, when it is confirmed it still leaves a ton of questions about her character motivations and why she acts the way she does. If she has sussed out that Johnny English is a spy too, then why would she try to kill him? If they are on the same side, then surely there's not much point in trying to eliminate somebody aiming to reach the same end? Why not just tell Johnny she is a spy rather than assuming he'd work it out for himself?
The comedy, on the other hand, is on fine form. Johnny English Strikes Again features all of the typical humour you would expect from a Rowan Atkinson comedy feature, from magnetic boots playing havoc with kitchen utensils to Johnny English in full knight armour falling down the stairs. This film is stuffed with great gags, one of my personal favourites being Johnny firing tear gas at French cyclists. Imagine that happening during the Tour De France...
There's also a stunning virtual reality sequence, where Johnny puts on a pair of VR goggles and is instantly presented with a computer generated interactive layout of the villain's hideout. This is a wild and gloriously inventive sequence, where Johnny - believing himself to actually be inside in the gaming world - crawls through traffic, whacks innocent people over the head and knocks a tour guide off a big red bus, as he interacts with various items in the virtual environment. As someone who has played a great deal of VR lately, I too have often felt immersed within the virtual landscape, so this exaggerated take on the same feeling of immersement made me laugh a lot.
Another highlight is the scenes of Johnny as a 'Geography teacher'. These scenes are brilliantly entertaining in just how wacky they are, as we see how Johnny has been teaching these kids the art of spy work. The camouflage child in particular makes for quite an amusing visual gag, as he manages to blend into various surroundings around the classroom - including the whiteboard.
Overall, Johnny English Strikes Again is a fun diversion for an hour and a half. It may have a weak and muddled plot, and the villain of the piece may be a tad predictable, but there's still plenty of laughs to be had. Just make sure your brain is fully switched off.
An improvement on 'Johnny English Reborn', if still a large distance off the entertaining original.
'Johnny English Strikes Again' does feel more like the first film though, unlike the 2011 sequel. That's in positive and negative ways. The vibe of the film being one of the pluses, but one of the cons being a couple of scenes felt repeated from the original.
Rowan Atkinson (Johnny) remains the standout piece of the series, while it's good to see the previously missing Ben Miller (Bough) return. Olga Kurylenko (Ophelia) is alright, while Emma Thompson (PM) is pleasant to see.
One issue I do have with this installment is the villain, who is extremely mundane and not at all threatening, menacing or funny. The main reason why the original is so much fun, at least to me, is that you had John Malkovich absolutely perfecting the villainous role and remaining on the same level as Atkinson. In the sequels, it's basically Atkinson and that's it. Bring back Pascal Sauvage, I say.
The humour in this third release is suitably fine, despite nothing truly hilarious. There are a few good scenes, the most memorable to me being the VR one. The ending is just about passable, almost bad but not quite. Overall, I found just enough that I enjoyed about this.
Rowan Atkinson is a comedic genius, but it's unfortunate when he pairs up with directors that don't know how to use his gift.
I find it better than the others. There was no Mr.Bean awful humour but nice misunderstandings and situations that led to be funny. Expect what you are suppose to watch and the time will pass nicely.
It begins with the same old spy movies concept but it is interesting to see how Johnny uses old school techniques to beat a modern enemy.
JOHNNY ENGLISH STRIKES AGAIN
Nailed it, bailed it or failed it?
Let’s play!
Writing: FAILED IT
The story is pretty much the same as in the first two films, and some kind of a nostalgic feel is present in many of the scenes. For the most part, however, the story is tiresome and brings nothing new to the table. The humour relies too much on either overly long scenes of Mr. Bean-like physical comedy or the fact that Atkinson is finally becoming so old that the world around him feels strange and unfamiliar. It’s funny to begin with, but becomes old rather quickly.
Many of the gags are repetitive and since everything moves along with a brisk pace, there is barely any time to develop things properly. Additionally, it seems like everything is solved by some kind of a gadget.
Despite all this, the film utilizes modern trends quite well and works best when it takes inspiration form the latest Bond-movies.
Characters and Acting: BAILED IT!
Rowan Atkinson is still as funny and likeable as ever in the lead role, and the return of his original sidekick Bough also works well. Some of Atkinson’s performance comes very close to Mr. Bean, particularly in scenes with no dialogue, and that took me out of the experience a bit.
Emma Thompson is lovely as the British Prime Minister (no doubt inspired by Theresa May), but is shamefully underused. Jake Lacy appears as the annoying villain who I just don’t get at all.
Ex Bond-girl Olga Kurylenko becomes the new English-girl in a forgettable and quite bland part that really doesn’t bring anything to the film itself.
Direction: NAILED IT!
The direction is solid all the way, but then again there is very little here that could go wrong.
Visuals: BAILED IT!
It sure looks good, apart from a few tacky CGI scenes (likely due to a lower budget). The film get particularly inventive in the memorable VR-scene, easily the best scene in the entire film.
Sound: NAILED IT!
The music sets the right tone and is just close enough to the music from other spy films to feel like actual spy film music.
Pacing: BAILED IT!
The pace is brisk and the film hardly slows down. That results in most of the characters never receiving much development and things never really explored in detail.
Themes: FAILED IT!
The world’s worst and best spy who thinks women cannot be spies or generals and a villain hacking and assuming control of the entire world just because he can. It’s the same old, outdated stuff.
Atmosphere: BAILED IT!
Unfortunately, much of the comedy isn’t very funny at all, but there are a few good laughs, like in the aforementioned VR-scene. Action scenes are few and far between but they do give this film that authentic spy film feel. Overall, it’s very light-hearted, like the Johnny English films should be.
Rewatchability: FAILED IT!
There’s nothing new here really, which shows that this franchise has reach the end of the line. When a franchise starts to repeat itself, it’s time to stop.
Expectations: BAILED IT!
Since Johnny English Reborn is my favourite film in the series and since Rowan Atkinson very rarely makes a bad comedy, I actually hoped this would stand up to his other works. Unfortunately, it doesn’t, even if it stays true to the formula of the series and is a suitable spy film parody.
Bottom line: BAILED IT!
Old age and outdated ideas make this third Johnny English film difficult to fully enjoy, even if the spy parody stays true to the best aspects of the franchise.
I'm not sure I have a lot to say about this movie, but one of my new year's resolutions this year is to try to leave at least a small review/comment for every movie I watch.
This was bad. At least in the sense that large parts of it were too self-serious and lacking in humour. The funny parts were funny, there just wasn't enough of them. If you want this movie to make you laugh, watch the trailer - that should more or less cover every decent joke.
The VR part was hilarious
It s a good enough movie to waste time, entertaining enough to not be bored. But if you have something more important to do, go do it. It is a Rowan Atkinson movie too, those who like him will like the movie (like me, even if my score doesn t show it), those who don`t will do better to sit this one out if you are not curious or do mind wasting time on a okay movie.
If you like Rowan, which I do, you'll probably like this movie. Like I did. If you don't like him I guess there's nothing really here for you because, yes, it has all been seen and done before.
Oh, and I'd take the Aston over the BMW any day, too.
Good for a laugh. Welcome back Johnny. Easy to watch.
From 9 year old nephew.
Good movie to cheer you up.
He liked Rowen A and the character Boff.
Funny throughout film, made him happy.
If you like other Johnny English film you will like this one too.
If you have watched the prequels then you'll definitely watched this one. When Mr Bean aka Rowan Atkinson is their, there nothing much to say. Most the funny scenes were guessable but the direction was great which makes them special. Definitely recommend to everyone who wants a Comedy movie.

It's Johnny English - he's back!! And your take on that will depend on what you thought of the other films in the series. There isn't anything new here, but... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Atkinson still has what it takes, and his rubber faced buffoonery and slapstick shenanigans are still as funny as ever. Bravo Mr English, bravo!
