I feel like just about everyone will connect with this movie in some way. It's funny, sad, charming and honest. Saoirse Ronan's performance is one of the best of the year. Her chemistry with Laurie Metcalf makes the Mother/Daughter relationship really work. Lucas Hedges and Tracy Letts are both fantastic too. I think every kid in high school should watch this movie.

Edit: I saw this again and it is still my favorite of the Oscar nominations. It really has a way to make you feel like your in high school again. Makes you realize how much you parents do for you and how much I love mine.

Edit 2: I watched this again, twice in two days, this time with my parents. My dad was cracking up at every time Lady Bird was shit talking her mom while my mom didn't think it was that funny. He also said some of the dad's lines literally right before he said them. After it ended my mom said "That's it? I thought she was going to come back and write her mom a check."

I wish I'd seen the same film everyone else on the planet seems to have seen. I suspect the one I saw had gone bad. Maybe it'd been out too long because it was not at all fresh, but a bit stale and a tad bland. I protest! I ordered the same thing everyone else had! As it is, I'm sending this one back.

Greta Gerwig is such a talented Writer, Director, and Actor. I was so excited to see this movie and was not disappointed. I look forward to everything Greta does and can’t wait to see what’s next.

Lady Bird is a must see in theaters!

Normally I wouldn't recommend to watch a movie this terrible, but this a different kind of terrible. If you're a filmmaker you should definetly watch it, because you can easily understand what went wrong with it, and learn from its mistakes. I dind't like anything, from the acting, to the camera movement, the colour grading, the cinematography, the plot, the character arc, not to mention the ending. A regular watcher can't tell what this film is about once it's finished, it's just a normal story. Which is totally fine, not every movie should carry a deeper meaning in it. And a story as such should aim to engage with the audience in an emotional way. Which is the worst part about this movie. It's uncomfortable half of the time, and i wouldn't want to be in it. The pacing was the only thing that was okay and that sustained my attention, other than my interest in understanding why it was so terrible watching it.

I watched the movie after the amazing reviews with 9s and 10s. Did I watch a different one than these people? Possibly, as this movie was boring and very very bland. Saoirse's performance was great (how do you pronounce this name?), nobody can deny that, but the whole thing lacked something. It felt endless and pointless.

Lady Bird was simply another teenage female coming-of-age film that presents us to nothing new. Definitely had some different interesting cinematography and kind of style. However, it lacks originality plot wise.

This film reminded me of another film I watched just a year ago before this one came out, titled "The Edge of Seventeen." Both films revolve around a female protagonist who goes through this "journey" of trying to fit in and then realizing what is truly important to her in the world. It also has the typical cliche concept of the female protagonist leaving their best friend over a boy. While The Edge of Seventeen seemed a bit more over the top dramatic with Hailee Steinfeld's forced edginess, Lady Bird kept a more realistic reason to have their protagonist in a complex lifestyle.

This movie is definitely way better than all of the other female coming-of-age films, however, it lacked some plot originally and was kept really bland and slow at times, with few unnecessary scenes. For that, I give the film a 6/10.

Ohh, also, Timothée Chalamet is so charming.

Thought I had to watch this because of all the hype and good reviews, but was disappointed in the end. Saoirse was really good and I'm sure will become a top-level star eventually, but that was all that I thought was worthwhile. Acting was generally well done, story was okay, but don't really see it as standing apart on its own as something great.

loading replies

A wonderful coming-of-age film, with an engaging plot and engrossing characters, perfectly portrayed by the talented cast.

loading replies

IDK, but, after watching this and seeing all the reviews about how warm and fuzzy and wonderful this movie was, and how great everyone was in it, I had to ask myself, is there a directors cut, or a different version that I got? Don't get me wrong, there were some good performances here, but, the lead character is basically shallow and unlikable, disrespectful and ungrateful to her Mom, plays her parents against each other, abandons her "best" friend when she has the chance to trade up, and then "suddenly" realizes she got it all wrong and "fixes" everything with a phone message in the end.

Maybe it isn't the times that have changed, but, what people have come to expect from each other.

loading replies

Not bad, but for me it was just the type of movie you forget about in two weeks.

loading replies

Lady Bird is dramatic and emotional, but at the same time relatable (especially from my own personal opinion) and I really can’t think of a single fault in it. The direction comes with an understanding of the material and all actors present their characters in different ways making everyone unique in how they influence Lady Bird (Christine)’s life. The film is very grounded in the real world, making it even more natural and special as the film goes on.

loading replies

Pointless. Boring. A waste of time.

Saoirse Ronan was the draw to this film for me. Her range of characterization and proficiency of craft makes every character she inhabits special and true, as is her Lady Bird. Although Saoirse was surrounded by a solid cast, Laurie Metcalf gave a performance I didn't know she had in her. This movie would have fallen apart had the two lead roles not held their own against/with each other. Although this film is a coming of age story, it is also nuanced, quirky, funny, sad and poignant, and, it delivers our character to a destination at the end of her journey, something lacking in many slice of life films of this generation. This is a good movie, you'll feel strongly for the characters and get caught up in their journeys. I give it a 7 (good) out of ten for the story, but the performances of Ronan and Metcalf a 10 (perfect) out of 10. [Comedy-in-life Drama]

loading replies

Honestly don't get all the hype about this movie... Way overrated. Watch The Edge of Seventeen instead.

loading replies

Kind of an aimless movie; I don't know why I took the Rotten Tomatoes score seriously when they have Black Panther rated as the top movie of all time. Nevertheless it was a decent film if a bit inseparable from other coming-of-age indie movies like Submarine.

A good and easily enjoyable movie. Great performance from the actors, and the directing was wonderful. There weren't any overly long and boring scenes. In fact, cutting to next scenes was done really effectively and the story flowed quite fluently forward.

However, partly due to the timeline moving forward relatively quickly and because of the length of the film, I feel that the characters lacked some depth. Good job anyways!

Also, I personally didn't find the storyline anything too special, and I wouldn't necessarily watch this again. The film was easy to watch but unfortunately nothing I would remember the next day.

Why are people so obsessed with 'relatable'? Being relatable doesn't suddenly make manifest a good story or character. The movie is ultimately just a series of things that happened to a girl with a somewhat pretentious personality, wrapped in an ending that seems to say: 'Don't forget to love your mom, even if she's abusively critical, because she's trying...'

Dear movies and everyone, stop justifying the shitty behaviour in the name of family. Stop telling kids that loving their family is important when so many families are terrible...

Be quicker to list all the ways I don't relate to this film. Held out a long time, not sure why now. Absolutely recommend anyone watch this. No question. Phenomenal acting, every character feels so real, it's a shame the other films in the original screenplay oscar category in 2017 were all so strong, 'cause this film deserved that award if not also ones for best direction and picture.

Watching this movie you can actually feel the love Greta Gerwig has for this story, it's characters and Sacramento. Big compliments to the realistic dialogue, the constant talking over and interrupting, that's how people talk with each other. It's a lovely movie and there is nothing particularly wrong with it, but it isn't as extraordinary as I thought it would be after all the praise - which, of course, isn't the movie's fault. I don't know.. it just didn't click with me on a deeper, more emotional level.
The only thing I - a former altar girl - could truly relate to was the scene with the sacramental bread :innocent: This must happen in every sacristy.

All things considered I am definitely looking forward to Greta Gerwig's projects to come!

Any coming of age film that's even competently made, I'll likely enjoy. So one that received as many accolades as Lady Bird should blow my mind, right? I was hoping it would, but instead it was just...pretty solid. I completely see the appeal, and the performances are great, but it felt like it was missing that extra bit of magic to make me fall in love with it. It's a very relatable and down to earth story and I feel for each of the characters...but there's something...incomplete. Obviously this is a good film, I'm just not sure it's as great as the word of mouth made it out to be.

Impossible not to fall in love with her.

loading replies

I love this movie!

Lady Bird is the rare example of a small, seemingly inconsequential story perfectly executed by a masterful filmmaker.

Gerwig’s screenplay follows it’s lead character through the end of high school through the eyes of the titular character. Anything that appears to be a big deal to lady Bird is treated like one by the script, this helps the audience relate to the character and her journey.

Ronan brings the character to life with her fantastic performance nailing both the humour and more serious moments with a likeable charm.

The sporting roles are also handled very well with notable performances from Lucas Hedges and Timothée Chalamet who continue too add to their impressive filmographies.

Greta Gerwig is certainly a filmmaker to watch, every shot feels internal and much of the emotional scenes are handled with a subtlety that allows the moment to breathe and doesn’t detract from the overall charm of the film. Definitely check this one out if you haven’t already.

We have seen coming of age stories before, of course, but this is better than most. Fresh and funny, and relatable (even to those of us who aren't teenage girls), this is enjoyable to watch, and worthy of its plaudits.

loading replies

I wish more movies like this would be made. This girl is amazing in everything she’s in.

loading replies

Come. On! Art house garbage. Yes, it's well acted. Yes, it has some great moments. Yes, that's it. It's one of those films where the credits rolled and I thought and said "that's it?!?" So. Lame.

It really is a good movie, a lot of heart, and funny... But not an Oscar winner. Not for me.

This is definitely one of the most powerful (and real) stories I've ever seen in my life. Fantastic!

I just couldn't get over the fact that she wanted to be called "Lady Bird". How am I supposed to take a character like that seriously?? I mean, she so desperately wanted to be special and miserable even though she was a perfectly regular person, and it genuinely gave me the biggest headache. Besides, she was also a painfully selfish and self-absorbed person and it was pretty much impossible to like her. Nonetheless, her mother really was crappy and judgmental though, I'll give her that.

All in all, I didn't care for the main character and considering absolutely nothing happens in this movie besides following her on her useless, uninteresting and meaningless journey as a teenager, I can safely say it was a very boring watch.

loading replies

greta gerwig, i’m gonna need you to make a movie where timothée and saoirse finally end up together.

loading replies

It was kind of good but it’s not historical even though the poster makes it seem like it is. It’s sad and there’s no storyline

loading replies

One of the best coming of the films out there, alongside Booksmart. Fab performances. A film to rewatch every couple years

loading replies

Was bored out of my mind for the first 20 minutes, so I watched the rest of it in fast forward.

loading replies

A typical coming of age story, and also, a love letter to Sacramento.

That aside… That mom gives me such bad vibes. I haven’t grown up with someone like this, luckily, but rather than just “toxic”, she comes off as right out narcissistic. The way lady bird tries to make herself sound like the worst person just for a bit of recognition, that hurt.

loading replies

A quality A24 coming of age movie without much to critique. It’s a quality movie that many people will love. Personally, I like Eighth Grade and Booksmart more, and this is the love child of the two.

Rating: 3.5/5 - 8/10 - Would Recommend

It’s a coming of age movie that nails most everything it aims for by keeping a keen eye on its lead and never losing sight of her development. Somehow Lady Bird can be annoying or endearing, mean or kind, cowardly or brave, and often several of those things at once, without ever feeling out of character or unwatchable. The movie just engulfs you in her space, and I was surprised how pleasant and homey it was even when things got their ugliest or saddest.

It does make the misses more noticeable, like Lady Bird’s racism to her brother that’s never apologized for or. Listen. Metcalf is a great actress. But her character is emotionally abusive and the film gives her too much grace, to the point that it gives her credit for letters she didn’t send and it ends with Lady Bird apologizing to her. Calling it abuse apologia is harsh and unfair, but it’s still a note that leaves a poor taste in my mouth. Still, a very solid film well worth the watch and its praise.

It is a just a normal movie... so normal, it's kind of special.

loading replies

May just be my personal tastes but it was overrated. Basically two hours of a girl fighting with her mom. Why does she make people call her “Ladybird”? Is there a reason? Everything about this movie feels fake and disingenuous.

loading replies

Powerful and raw movie with the perfect amount of humour to lighten its touch. 18 is probably one of the toughest ages to be, you've to make a decision that will impact and follow you for rest of your life, while not having the wisdom and knowledge to undertake such a task. I can understand the struggles from both the mother and daughter all too well, you have that dream to be more, go more but unfortunately that dream costs a pretty penny and that financial burden quite often falls onto your all too loving parents.

loading replies

okay but when Saoirse Ronan says "why don't I look like the girls in the magazines", i snorted

honey, I got some news for ya

loading replies

A 10! Despite having many cliches in the plot everything is carefully endorsed to result in something spectacular. During several scenes I had the feeling of being a reflection of Lady Bird more than anything when she made bad decisions. The movie left me shocked because it really created a bond with my younger self. I enjoyed connecting with the movie and I totally recommend it as others that have left their mark on me.

Hidden gem on theme of puberty and young woman problems, spiced by dark humor.

It was a good movie but not exceptional 7 for the movie and +1 for Saoirse Ronan cause she looks good in red.

After reading the following review i realize maybe i don't get the whole movie , so i'll watch it again. If you feel like this to read the following review and you will understand why people loved it so much:

The Edge of Seventeen runs circles around this film. Tim is pretty overrated too. Love the director, but not seeing the hype.

loading replies

Solid coming of age story with quirky, and very realistic characters. It's an indie darling, that's being a bit overly praised, as it doesn't really do much new for the genre, but it does its thing well. It's a very human and engaging story.

Having a teen daughter in high school, who’s Catholic too, this movie had lots of familiar moments. I don’t want her to leave for school either. Good movie but I’m nut sure it’s good enough to win Best Picture.

loading replies

I enjoyed watching Lady Bird, it was a nice easy movie with a good story and acting. A little predictable but that didn't make it less enjoying. It was just long enough and it somewhat felt like a love story towards Sacramento

loading replies

Got to be one of the best movies of 2017. Powerful and heartwarming, but best of all, laugh out loud funny. I'll get a load of repeat viewings out of this.

loading replies

Lady Bird is good in the way that Jane Austen's books are good: Not because it's extremely original or mindblowing, but because this is the story of a female teen told by someone who is a woman and was a teen not a lot of time ago, not by a 52 year old male. Having gone to a Catholic High School, coming from -economically- a family similar to hers, and having family members with depression did help me relate to her and make this an all tears film for me. But I feel like this film will resonate with everyone, whether you're male, black, white, latino (like me), gay, straight or bi, because it isn't just the story of a teenage girl, it's a story about growing, learning to appreciate your family, accepting yourself and just daring to be you, just you. It's about being a teenager...

P.S.: The skirt checking scene is legit af

I love Greta Gerwig, I really do. I adore most of her work. This was a good movie, but not a great movie. I went out to see it after it won the Globe. I liked it, but I didn't love it. The acting was B+, except for Laurie Metcalf who killed it. I could tell it was Greta's first solo feature script. I related to it somewhat, being a senior myself in 2002. But nothing except the final few moments made me really feel anything for the characters. A good film, but not even remotely close to the best indie film I saw from 2017.

I will wager that if you like "Juno" you will like this film. The script is fast-paced without a lot of what I prefer, e.g. allowing time to pass as in real life, without dialogue constantly being spoken. This film, to me, is like a solipsist's dream.
