this was a good movie and a clean movie. of course tom hanks was good. a great actor

As in "True Grit" (Henry Hathaway, 1969), the protagonist accompanies a girl on a journey through the dangerous Western. But Captain Kidd is not a drunkard like Marshal Rooster Cogburn, he is a man whose ethics make him strange amidst deception and violence. Like him, this film is low-key, calm, with some good action scenes but a general tone of irrelevance. It is a western as decent as it is not very remarkable.

A good story, well told. I think both Hanks and Costner have improved with age, primarily by choosing roles befitting their years instead of trying to be action heroes etc like some of their peers. “Let Him Go” the recent Costner film and this one see both playing their age, and turning in fine performances because of it, rather than in spite of it. Hanks has a list of classics to his credit, along with some stinkers, but if you can place The Green Mile, Road to Perdition, Saving Private Ryan amongst your credits, you’ve done well! This isn’t up there with those gems, but it’s a good solid performance in a watchable tale that does him credit.

Quite an obvious film from the beginning. It has some lovely shots and I liked the ending despite it's predictability. Liked the history of it and it's importance. Not a poor film by any stretch - it just held the viewer's hand a bit too much. The girl Helena Zengel is so brilliant, such a natural little smile - anyone who enjoyed her performance should seek out 'System Crasher' which was one of the best films of 2020.

Although on the surface a rather simple, foreseeable and straightforward plot I enjoyed watching this. Little Helena plays really well alongside Hanks, she doesn't seem intimidated and they have good chemistry. I was tempted to give the movie an "8" but ultimately went for a "7".
I didn't like the parts where they are chased by those men which ultimately seemed only to be there to provide an obstacle for them to overcome. I thought there could have been some connection, maybe those men knowing the girl. Same goes for the scene where they meet the Indians or the part in the town. Those parts just came and went.

It's not a spectacular movie by any means but it's honest entertainment.

Really beautifully shot film, with a few suspenseful moments, and lots of heart.

Solid performance from the lead actors, authentic western setting, hints of suspense and with mystery to pull you into the characters supported with a heart felt ending. Good watch.

Great western. Hanks is very good as usual but young Helena Zengel steals the show in my opinion. Technically the film has stand out cinematography, sound and music. Enjoyed this one. Recommended.

Good directing, bland script. Scant more happens than what it says in the one-line synopsis.

A film with beautiful scenery, following the adventures of Captain Kidd (a truly wholesome character, in true Tom Hanks fashion), this film makes me want to jump back in time into the wild west during the 19th century, so I can explore the dusty plains and wilderness for myself.

The only element I found this film lacking in was action; more of it may have kept me on the edge of my seat to a greater extent. Although the shootout included was an enjoyable one, and besides, Captain Kidd doesn't seem the kind of person who resorts to violence unless being forced to.

The book is far better. Movie is from a screenplay, not an adaptation.

What a wholesome, brilliant story. Was almost in tears by the end.

So many beautiful, strong moments. Like when he asks Johanna to remember more and she just goes dark.
The conversation where she points to earth and sky and hugs herself, and he says for them, it's all just a straight road. There was such a beauty in that image of this world-hug.
And when she paints the horse.
The way she points at things with her little finger instead of how we use our pointy finger.

Quite a few surprises along the way. Like Calley. "I like your stories". That was strong.

I only would have loved the exchange with the natives to be longer. That's the only thing I'm missing.

Like most good westerns the story is usually what carries the day and this film is no different. The comparisons to True Grit are bound to happen but quite frankly that was a better film because of Rooster Cogburn was a more interesting character. In that sense it is a cleaner and more sanitized western than that movie. Hanks does some of his best work since Cast Away and the other lead is a revelation. I don't know if this breaks into the top ten of Hanks best films but I could think of worse ways to spend 118 minutes.

A very good story well told with excellent performances. Very nice directing. A solid 9 out of 10 for me.

It was a solid 10 for me. I felt content about my expectations about the story told. For me, this is, without using nudity and sex, the best kind of content I want to consume to make my hours spent watching anything, worth of. Again, I recommend it to anyone who appreciates feelings at their purest form.

Not bad... lightweight and a bit vacuous, but has some entertainment value and some warmth. Certainly not a "great" movie, but I didn't regret seeing it.

Now, I absolutely loved this. it is more of a slow burn and showcases Tom Hanks acting style perfectly. He worked well with the young female lead, making this a truly enjoyable watch.

I enjoyed watching and visiting life on the road in 1870 Texas. I wouldn't watch again though as the performance from the young female lead was flat and the relationship between the two characters was not explored as deeply as it could have been.

A movie made to showcase Tom Hanks.

I preferred his previous movie Greyhound over this. That movie kept a furious pace and one never felt bored.

This movie can be sleep inducing at times.

It does capture the feel of the Old America though quite well:slight_smile:

It’s not breaking news to suggest Hanks is great in this. He gives his usual fine performance though he is almost matched by his young companion. Its a good film though probably not a western classic.

A nicely executed story but it's a story that has been told before and doesn't take long before you know how it will play out.
It's a nice looking movie with solid acting but if this had been an ordinary year I can't for my life imagine this being in the finishing races for an Oscar.

This is a good, wholesome, old-fashioned western. It was a pleasure to watch and had a happy, satisfying ending.

Of all of the movies released recently, this has the widest appeal of them all. A nice movie for the whole family without being a family movie, you know what I mean?

It was Pretty good movie. It was not a blockbuster but a solid performance. It kept my interest.

This is an exquisite movie, sensitive told with phenomenal performances. The cinematography is panoramic and evocative. There are moments of peril but the larger arch is relational. I was totally swept up in their exploration and search for a common frame of reference to reconcile their fractured lives. I appreciated that it defied stereotypes. Each characters story, each cultures perspective, each tension was multifaceted. I give this film a 9 (superb) out of 10. [Post Civil War Drama]

So so amazing, Tom Hanks legend and Helena Zengel wowwwww! Oscar-worthy performances from both, it's been a long time since I've been teary eyed while watching a movie.
