Shallow Grave 1994

Pretty good debut from Danny Boyle, he’d already found his style here and I’d argue he’s the main attraction of the film. Technically it’s obviously not as impressive as some of his later work (e.g. the lighting during the night scenes is too bright) but the kinetic filmmaking does a lot to elevate a by the numbers script. It’s not a bad screenplay, but it leans more towards the predictable/familiar side, especially if you’ve already seen films like Rope or A Simple Plan. Again, it’s the presentation that makes this film special for me. It also has some performances from the three leads who are all playing unlikeable characters; quite unlike anything I’ve seen McGregor play after this.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Shallow Grave’:

  1. Solid ending. I didn’t see that coming.

  2. I had questions. Why couldn’t they just report the death and keep the money? Why did the two roomies all of a sudden decide to be a couple? Some character actions just didn’t flow, and I didn’t really sense they were each out for themselves until the very end.

  3. I thought the direction and cinematography were pretty fantastic. Some great shots all throughout. This was apparently Danny Boyle’s first feature film and I can see how he was quick to impress.

honestly started this off as a thirst-watch (ewan) and ended as a thirst-watch. would i watch this again? probably. i liked the fun dancing scene and kerry fox and ewan mcgregor (christopher was cool no hate but his character was lame) BUT the plot was so weird and just... not funny? felt a lot more serious than they had wanted it to be, and not in a good way. i did LOVE the directing style, though. would watch it again just for that, tbh

Even better the second time around, fantastic work from danny boyle and great choice on cast.

I loved the plot in this, definitely well made and the level of change in the characters through the film was spot on!

Normally I don't usually meet people, unless I already know them.
