Made me never wanna have kids.
Meh...it's been done before, and far better. Basically, this is Rocky II and Rocky III thrown into a blender for 2 hours. It bypasses the original Rocky movie because it starts with Billy Hope (Gyllenhall's character) already on top of the boxing world, and not having to come from nothing. Aside from that aspect, though, it's very similar to Rocky II and Rocky III in that he loses everything, has to "find himself", and "fight" his way back. Yeah, there's a couple of different spins on it, but like I said, it's been done before. I like Gyllenhall as an actor, but I didn't really find him a good match for this particular role. In fact, there wasn't really ANYONE in the entire cast who really impressed me in their performance. I usually like Forrest Whitaker, but - just like Jake Gyllenhall - he didn't seem to fit the part real well here. If there was any outstanding performance, it would have to go to Miguel Gomez who seemed in his element as the antagonist, "Magic" Escobar. I wouldn't call it a "bad" movie, but it did seem to be an awful lot like the aforementioned Rocky movies. If you're a fan of boxing movies, you might enjoy this one…but be warned: it's very predictable.
Southpaw 2015 Review
Antoine Fuqua' Southpaw is a hard hitting inspiring journey of a champion boxer and is infact a brilliant action sports movie which ticks all boxes of the genre. Jake Gyllenhaal is majestic in this riches to rags to redemption drama which punches above its weight.

Very predictable plot.
I don't think that Jake Gyllenhaal was the best actor for this part.

:man:⚖ Review : Southpaw is Cinematic Masterpiece which involves a heartwarming, moving and inspiring tale of Boxer Billy Hope played by Jake Gyllenhaal. The Plot and Premise is nothing phenominal but the fact that how realistic you can make a movie matters. The movie oscillates events from the life of Billy which were tragic, hurting and heartbreaking and how he fights all odds to win the world and her daughter over. This Antoine Fuqua Sports Drama is completely engrossing and leaves no stones unturned when it comes to screenplay, extraction of brilliant performances and immervsive BGM which elevates the experience.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a revelation in this one, unlike any other roles he has done in the past he is lean and seems to fit into the physique quite extra-ordinarily. His performances is magical. With a bunch of brilliant actors like Forest Whitaker and Rachel McAdams there is no complaints on anyone's work behind the camera.
Overall , One of the finest Sports Drama i have watched yet. A definite watch if you like engrossing sports like Boxing and how a simple sport matters everything and cas cost you everything in real life.

Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
The film has intensity and soul.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays an excellent role.
Underrated.
Not very good. If you’re a real fight fan the boxing scenes will mostly suck. I’m pretty sure that Jake’s character has the IQ of a goldfish.
Jake is outstanding here! Everyone gave great performances with the exception of 50 Cent. Dude needs to stay in the music industry, in my opinion of course.
For some reason all I could think about while watching this was how much I wanted a prequel that showed his rise from a kid in the system to a world class boxing champion, because honestly there was so much to unpack there and the way Jake and Rachel worked their characters and their chemistry it was almost like you were following their stories for a long time. You couldn't help but root for Billy and his family from pretty much the first scene, and that's all down to Jake, he really made me go through every emotion with this and I cried a few good tears. Loved it. Love him.
9/10
1.) Alternate name - The great White Dope
2.) Best Performance by Jake
3.) Different Plot from Regular Sports Movie
Very dramatic with a lot of different emotions! The plot is not linear although there is no sidestory, there are so many things I did not see coming. The fights were very very engrossing and exciting.
It is so motivating and I love it! I really love it when movies change something in you and make you feel stronger.
Well directed, superbly acted, but the film is something we have seen before. As both family drama and boxing movie, the film fails to sidestep genre cliches. Still, while it doesn't deliver a knockout punch, the film is still worth watching.
southpaw - an emotional comeback of a boxer
Jake as Billy hope gave a big hope to this movie. This movie is one kind of an inspiration to people who lost focus on their life and move towards their life. the emotional bond with daughter shown very well. Jake has worked very hard. he is one of the best method actor we have.
great cast and another great boxing film
Best Boxing Movie I have ever seen. 10/10
I loved the action in the ring and the heart-clenching part with his wife after the blood-rising conflict with Miguel Gomez. It's one of those movies that you don't mind watching all over again.
Epic movie!! The performance by Jake was absolutely top notch!! If you're not into boxing don't let that stop you, this is so much more than a boxing movie!!
If you want every single boxing cliche you could possibly force into 90 minutes, this movie is for you.
Rachel McAdams was the best part of this movie by far.
It's beautiful emotional movie. You will cry on it
Tremenda peli! Si andan con ganas de mariconear un rato o aunque sea de ver un buen drama, esta es la peli. Las actuaciones la rompen y la que mas me sorprendió, fue la nena que hace de hija de Gyllenhall. Excelente.
Wow really liked this movie ! Jake Gyllenhaal did such a wonderful performance.. I had tears in my eyes some scenes well done !
Brilliant performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. I thought this movie was great, it really played on my emotions.
AMAZING Jake Gyllenhaal performance. Best of best
A brilliant movie. The acting in this movie is so great and touching. Decent plot too. Definitely deserves a better rating.
I don't think it's a great movie but worth the watch and Jake Gyllenhaal really give an excellent performance which is pretty much the reason why it worth it. But the movie is full of cliches and things we already have seen before that makes it very average.
The BEST performance ever seen by Jake Gyllenhaal. Amazing character in this movie.
Jake never disappoints his audience
Boring from beginning to end. It does not live up to expectation.
Southpaw is an enjoyable movie about the struggles of a light-heavyweight boxer champion. This isn't a film with 80% of the screen time within the ring. Its more about the hard life of the boxer outside of the ring. Overall the story is pretty forward. So don't expect awesome plot twist like in Gone Girl or so. I didn't mind that the story was kinda predictable and I will try to explain why. For starters, Jake Gyllenhaal is playing the main role in this movie and he knocks it out of the park with his performance. He is such a good actor who carried the whole movie! Besides that I think Forst Withtaker deserves a 'honorable mention' for Forest Whitaker. Secondly the charterers felt real to me. I could relay with them, even when they made bad choices. I could understood why they did it. I think Kurt Sutter had a big role in this, he is the writer of the TV series Sons of Anarchy. So he knows how to write a character. The last thing that made it enjoyable was the whole why of filming. This was done pretty decent, there were some weaker parts but overall the film looked and felt good to me. Overall southpaw is a decent movie to me which I liked to watch mostly because of the outstanding performance of Jake Gyllenhaal.
what a great movie . ^_*
The best performance I've ever seen about Jake Gyllenhaal ! I enjoyed all the movie.
This movie become in one of my group of favorites, love it a lot!
Best movie ever!! I just got through watching it
Nice hard drama. Gyllenhall has come a long way from the small kid in Donnie Darko to probably one of the best performances of his career.
Reallay amazing. You have to watch it. Jake is so incredible as always.
OMG! Amazing movie!! Such a roller coaster ride in the emotions department. I loved Kurt Sutter's writing for Sons Of Anarchy, and he wrote this movie too!! Must see flick for sure!!
Yes this a movie about a boxer. No this isn't a boxing movie. It's a movie about family, love, children, "hope", and recovery. When I sat down in the theater to see this, I was expecting a boxing movie. It was a real life tale of a boxers journey through tragedy to get his life and family back together. As a father of two little girls, it had me a mess emotionally. I found myself in Hope's shoes, and rooting for all the characters in the film.
P.S. The guy in the red shirt and striped tie at the charity event put on a great performance. Watch for him!
P.P.S (spoiler alert) What's the deal with Hoppy. I don't see how that was really necessary in the film. Why add more tragedy to an already dark movie?
What do you think? I cant wait to see this movie
Southpaw is a 2015 American Drama about a boxer named Billy Hope (Played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who is at the peak of his career when a series of tragic events happen in which he must come back and redeem himself in order to coupe with these trajeties. Now i'll first of all say I haven't watched too many boxing films, and one of the gripes many have with this movie is the fact that that it's not too ambitious and pretty run of the mill for a fighting/boxing movie. Personally, aside from the end I couldn't really pull too many clichè's out so that aspect didn't bother me. However this might take enjoyment out of the movie for other. Aside from that, Southpaw is a very well directed and well acted emotionally pulling film. Gyllenhaal who just a few months ago knocked it out of the park in his role in Nightcrawler does it again. He transforms his body and personality to make the part. When you're watching the movie you don't see Jake Gyllenhaal playing Billy Hope..you see the character of Billy Hope. Yes, he's that good. The supporting cast were great as well, 50 cent, though his characters intentions were a little cloudy did a great job in his role. Forest Widicker impressed with a great and emotional performance, as well as Billy Hopes daughter in the movie (who's name I do not know) brought alot here. Though short lived, Rachel McAdams did a very good job in her roll and had great chemistry with Gyllenhaal. Aside from a few small gripes with the character arcs, I can't really think of any problems I had with this movie. The fighting scenes were intense and believable..I was skeptical in the beginning, but after about thirty seconds i was sold. The movie was very believable and emotionally heartbreaking. I wouldn't go as far as calling it depressing, but our protagonist goes through hell and Gyllenhaal sells it so well, which is why I was so invested and pulled in to the movie..which even made me get glassy eyed. The story is executed very well, paying off at the end with no loose ends and overall having no pacing issues or parts in the story that were boring. The final fifthteen minutes had me on the edge of my seat and overall I think the movie was great, if you're looking to see the movie in theaters please give this film your money over Pixels, which was also released this weekend. Overall (for me) 9/10. If you liked my review give me a follow!
Top Movie! Really enjoyed every minute!
definitely recommend seeing this movie 10/10!!!!!!!!!! jake is amazing and his character is inspiring! one of my faves
This movie was really good! 2 thumbs up from me

While it relies on major cliches in the "boxing" genre and the predictable plot this movie is well deserved of its emotional value, especially how its portrayed by Jake.
