Art is the principal way in which the human mind has tried to remake the world in a way that makes sense. The carefully edited, slow-motion, action replay of a rugby tackle, a car crash or a sex act has more significance than the original event. Thanks to virtual reality, we will soon be moving into a world where a heightened super-reality will consist entirely of action replays, and reality will therefore be all the more rich and meaningful.

The ‘Asian Cinema 100’ is a collaboration project with the Busan International Film Festival and the Busan Cinema Center to shed light on the values of Asian film. The list will be updated every 5 years to act as a guide for the aesthetic value and history of Asian cinema and to discover hidden masterpieces and talented directors of Asia.

For the project, 73 prominent film professionals at home and abroad included film critics such as Jonathan Rosenbaum, Tony Rayns, Hasumi Shigehiko, and renowned festival executives, programmers, and directors Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Bong Joon-ho, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. They recommended their top 10 films, resulting in 113 selections and 106 directors (including joint rankings) for the final 100 list.

In 2009, Film magazine asked 92 Iranian critics to vote for the best Iranian films. The original list was a top 20. This list includes all films that received at least 2 votes. The ballots are available on Film magazine's website (click the 4 links at the bottom).

In 2008, Film magazine made a list of the best Iranian films of the last 3 decades.

The Cannes Film Festival, founded in 1946, is one of the world's oldest film festivals. The private festival is held annually (usually in May) in the resort town of Cannes, in the south of France. Cannes is extremely important for critical and commercial interests and for European attempts to sell films on the basis of their artistic quality. Additionally, given massive media exposure, the non-public festival is attended by many movie stars and is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.
