Disgusting amounts of racism. The entire movie portrays white people as killers, Nazis, and politicians. And black people as 'the saviour's of the community' and a gross romanticsised view of gangs. Pay attention, you won't see one white person portrayed as helping the community, and you won't see one black person working with the government.
I also was disappointed at the amount of gorr or scare. I have seen a lot of shit, and this movie's darkest moments were absolutely basic and boring. An entire island can do anything they want, they wouldn't be nice. Society is far more degraded than this movie portrays, which disappointed me. I was expecting to see some realism, but experienced none of it.
Another year, another Purge movie, another missed opportunity.
In short, this, like every other Purge movie before it, lacks in violence & gore, has cheap visual effects and has a stupid, poorly written script.
The script is basically the same as all other Purge movies and completely fails to entice the audience. It misses all opportunity to go all-out on the violence, lacks character development and just follows it’s cookie cutter format: people that shouldn’t be out on purge night are and need to be saved. It tries to convey a social message but does it so clumsily that it fails it in that miserably too.
Seriously, this franchise either needs to ramp up and decide it wants to be a hardcore gore/horror movie (for which it’s premise should be perfectly suited, but let’s be honest; it won’t do that because it won’t attract the general public) or get purged from cinemas itself.
If you are looking for a movie that pushes a racist agenda, this is your movie.
This movie brings a lot of question in my mind.
1. The story plot is not balance.
A. Focus on black people only. No offence but I love them.
B. Where are the other ethnicity neighborhood?
C. White people as enemy and politicians.
2. Why are the drug dealers become the heroes of the movie?
I guess this is just the start of the movie Purge. I watched all the movies this week and this one, the latest kind lost its hype for me. I still liked the actors and actress. Dang, Nya your beautiful.
Anyways, murder ain't solve our problem but love and unity. Peace all. Shalom.
Stopped watching when I felt really guilty for being white. Just another typical political statement from Hollywood. shit.
Definately the lesser of all Purge movies for the simple reason it's a wee bit one-sided in it's political statement. Don't really care that the hero of the movie is a drug kingpin but it does appear that the bad guys are all white people and usually of the racist type. Even the hero at one point says something in the vain of "let's show these white-head mofo's..." half an hour-ish before he chokes a blue-eyed, very blonde aryan-type kinda guy. Previous movies left it all a bit more in the middle, even the series has good people of all races.
They should have kept it Government VS People and not a veiled race-war. Cause let's face it... It's the people in charge we should purge not our fellow man on the street. Then again... it's easier targeting those below us I guess.
Regardless of the duality one can find in this movie there should have been a little bit more regardless if it sells better this way.
I just watched this, and I didnt had any expectations. But I must say I liked it, then I could have wanted more gore. But it's ALOT of killing haha!
The white supremacists are real mad about this one. They must not have watched the last two movies, where the NFAA and racists were also working together. And they missed the entire point of these movies. Another great addition to the franchise. 7/10.
Time to purge this turd from the Watchlist
OK, The Purge franchise is not the most prestigious franchise out there. But I found every single one of them to be suspenseful and frightening. Once the "purge" countdown starts, the sense of danger is always looming and I love that about the first three movies.
So back to The First Purge.
I can tolerate and understand the necessity of political underpinnings. But I just didn't feel the sense of urgency and danger. All the main actors did a credibly good job and the film is shot well enough. But the story and the villains (except fantastic but all to brief Skeletor) were just not compelling enough to carry the film.
first in the series to try and be political, they tried too hard and it was whites vs blacks. waste of time and cash
Why is it so hard to make a good Purge movie!
PUSSY GRABBING MOTHERFUCKERS
Lolollollol
Best line of the entire movie lol and that's about it, I guess they forget we need to have fun while watching the damn movie.
Number 3 is still the absolute best and most awesome out of the hole franchise.
I wish the hole franchise was as epic as the 3rd installment is wow how amazing and memorable this whole franchise would be and......
What Fun We Would Have.
6/10
Nowhere near as awesome as number 3 and to be honest I found this a little slow and draggy, I found myself clock watching as it felt like a snyder cut and seem to go on for way to long eith not much happening, which is crazy because it's the shortest purge yet with the running time. But after watching the awesome and best purge which is number 3 entry this just seemed slow and not much to hold my attention. Yes the contacts were cool and looked mad AF and yes we needed more skeletor who was mad AF and was definitely the most interesting part of the movie, he was definitely underused everthing else just plodded along to it's conclusion which was fair I suppose, what more is their to say are where could they have gone with the franchise except show YOU how it all began.
"Yeah Cheers for"
For God sakes I dread to think we're their going with the next one and I shudder to think how good/bad it will be.
Honestly I liked the movie, it has elements in it I wasn't expecting and I enjoyed the development of the characters. There are cheesy moments, but this is an action thriller with some invested characters, and it isn't your zombie movie that people want all out gore. It had some great thrilling elements, and a few surprising twists that kept me entertained and I liked it.
It's got some interesting ideas and statements to make, but it's a little heavy handed and feels too cheap while doing it. Like the movie feels like it was shot and edited on an iPhone. There's a few cool visuals though, even when logic is completely thrown out the window.
This movie want me to side with a drug dealer and i can't.
As per usual, great idea and great marketing but a script so bad it must've been written on dirty toilet paper where they couldn't read the words so used the shite instead.
And what's up with the whole "Will there be a second Purge?" storyline, as if we didn't know there were already three films after this one?
Marisa Tomei is far too good for this film.
[Note: I did accord the film an extra point for the Pussy Grabbing joke.]
I had no intention of seeing this, but my sister really wanted to see it, so I acquiesced. I've never seen any of the other Purge movies, though I have seen that Purge episode of Rick & Morty.
And I've gotta say, I thought this was pretty good. It conveyed a pretty important political message, but did so without being too heavy-handed and preachy. The characters were kinda dull but likeable enough, especially Y'lan Noel, who I hope we see a lot more of in the future.
Sooo bad. The only reason it didn’t earn my first 1 is it was so bad it had us cracking up in the theaters! Turrible
It's got action, violence and the usual story line. Just a shame they don't make it an 18 rating and make it really gory!
Good premise for a 4th/1st movie in a franchise didn't execute the best but had good action some jump scares although they weren't really scary and one comedic character pretty much on the same level as the other purge movies
wasted my time to see this rubbish.
My favorite part was when the baby face was trying to grab the chick's pussy and then she yelled out "You pussy grabbing mother fucker!" Such a blatant reference to Trump, I love it.
Started off strong and ended like a cheap action film... 5/10.
Spoilers down below.
Pros:
The premise started strong with the start of the Purge experiment and how the world was reacting to it.
I adored how they portrayed the Church as a refuge for those in need as well.
The protags were great as well.
Cons:
It started off with subtlety and natural flow but somewhere in the mix, they pretty much made a race war. I didn't notice this off the bat but slowly realized. Every good guy was a minority. Every bad guy (besides Skeletor who was just psychotic) were white. Not only this, when you look at the mercenaries, it's the whitest dudes you can get, and many wear KKK masks and Nazi-like appearances.
The action was so unbelievably over-the-top. It's hard to be in suspense when the gang leader is apparently Jason Statham.
Skeletor was shown as a main antagonist but somewhere in the mix, he just disappeared. Only for him to reappear, conveniently, in the "final battle", just to be killed off.
The ending was something like a cheesy action film where the "heroes" battle the terrible government.
And the film portrays the civilians has unwilling to Purge yet everytime it shows a civilian purging, they just hide in some abandoned area, do some "where is he?!" yelling and then disappear somewhere.
I liked the first purge movie, the premise was good, original and had a lot of killings/fun. The rest was just part of the franchise, and they had the same recipe.
I was expecting an origin movie from the beginning of the franchise. We all knew from the movies that had a deeper political white supremacy reason, here it tried to deliver that but it fails, i still don't understand the why, why the urge to do that ? why not doing the purge people are more dangerous, or the urgency to do that experiment. I do not care aabout the PC crap.
The first part was introductory for me, the second part was very entertaining, a lot of combat fightings Din ended up to be an awesome ninja killing machine, nice action and kill shots.
They can stop making them now.
Not so much a horror film as a bloodshed thriller. The plot development is nice and clear and quick to the point so that the majority of the film is left for the action and main premise that makes this a great edge of your seat thriller as it follows an experiment performed by a new rising political party to turn one small portion of the country into a lawless murderous zone for 24 hours in the hopes that it would lower crime during normal time, but a big twist is what makes this really interesting and leaves for a cliffhanger.
The fourth film in the "Purge" franchise, "The First Purge" serves as a prequel to the 2013 original. The story follows the New Founding Fathers of America as they conduct a radical experiment on Staten Island, allowing residents to commit any crime for twelve hours with no consequences. While the previous films in the franchise have been criticized for their violence and lack of originality, "The First Purge" continues this trend and adds little to the franchise. The performances of Y'lan Noel and Lex Scott Davis are notable, but the film is otherwise filled with cliches and contrivances, and lacks tension or atmosphere. The addition of neon lights and Marisa Tomei in a blonde wig seems to be the only real reason for this movie's existence. The film is not a necessary addition to the franchise and does not add anything new to the story.
Entertaining and a lot of chaos. I actually enjoyed this prequel more than I expected. It didn't expand much on what the franchise has already done but it's really fun to watch. The storyline is great, it has more depth and it answers some questions we had from the previous films. Lots of fun action scenes, great kills and striking imagery. The most important thing was I truly cared for the characters. The final act was surprisingly cathartic! While all films from this franchise aren't that great, they're entertaining at some level, except the first one. That was hot garbage. I'm intrigued to see what they do with The Forever Purge.
A disappointing and rote prequel, The First Purge delivers some exciting action but its politics are rather stale. When a new political party is swept into power they launch an experiment in which Stanton Island is quarantined and all crime there is legalized for twelve hours, however the resident’s apathetic response soon leads the organizers to take matters into their own hands. Unfortunately the class warfare message is really heavy handed and one sided, as there’s no rationalization or justification given for the Purge (as there was in the other films). Still, the film does a great job at building suspense and excitement during the chases and fight scenes. And the character drama is pretty good too. The First Purge is a riveting thriller, but the blatant propaganda drags it down.
The worst Purge movie, IMO. I was expecting a lot more, but this one was just boring.
As someone who loves the purge movies this one didn’t live up to the other three. Extremely racist and too much of a Trump fantasy. This was trash but still enough to make me watch this shit
Omg, Kendrick singing at the end... Cringe...
AKA Donald Trump's wet dream, this isn't as good as the other Purge movies, but its still okay for diehard fans of the series.
Dmitri was the reason i watched this movie tbh!! i mean come on!!!
After watching the complete Purge movies, I have to say that I am quite disappointed with this one. The racism theme was stronger than ever, maybe a little bit too much, with all those referencies to nazism. For the First Purge they have isolated Staten Island (one of the poorest areas of NY) and transformed it a battlefield. At the beginning the experiment is not working, that's the government make appear some extremist groups. The beginning was good, because you wonder when actually the purge starts and how, but in the end we have a classic clan war, and some extremist groups killed by locals. Seriously, nothing impressive. Anarchy remains the best movie in the serie, for now. They have to push more, to show more gore, more action. I don't know if they will make a new one, considering that there is also a TV show, but if the will do a fifth one, well they have to do it better than this one.
Suspension of disbelief in this franchise just gets harder to have in every movie.
Music and acting was good. Story felt rushed though
Really really really bad... Don't waste ur time... Just gave it 4 because most of the actors are really good. But the plot is total sh1t... I miss good Purge movies...
Completely agree with KingKon_NL, nailed it in one. Game of Thrones does better at effects then this film.

Politically and racially motivated in a poor way to reflect the times. The film also wants you to side with a drug dealer; nope. A letdown for Purge fans.
