The Meg.
Alternative title: Everything wrong with contemporary Hollywood in 2 hours.
Alternative title II: This one’s for you, China.
Just shut up, Meg.
2/10
I enjoyed the movie. If you thought it was going to be a period piece, you're wrong. If you thought it was going to be Oscar-bait, you're wrong. If you thought it was going to be a lean/mean action flick with fun set pieces and an entertaining plot line...that's what you get. One of the better movies of the summer, because while it plays serious enough, it knows it is here to put on a show and entertain us. In particular, I think Rainn Wilson does a good job of not going overboard while presenting an over the top type of character. Sit back and smile as the chaos fills the screen.
Lesson here: don't watch any big name movies with Chinese characters in it. Pacific rim 2, Cloverfield Paradox, Escape Plan 2... You will regret seeing any of them.
Ugh. I LOVE Jason Statham and will see anything he's in. I even saw that trash heap Mechanic 2 in theaters. This was also no good. Generic, cheesy not in a fun way, and cliched. And the CGI oy oy oy. Look I know they're not gonna shoot with a real shark, etc, but I just don't feel any stakes knowing it's all CGI bullshit. I feel like MI6 has spoiled movies for me haha. I need every actor to go all Tom Cruise please!!
This movie feels a lot like Jaws even though it has different story line - the essence is the same.
Lots of cliches but if you see it with the mindset that you want to be entertained for couple of hours - go for it, otherwise you will not enjoy it. Nothing spectacular as far as cinematography goes, so don't waste your money on premium screenings. It has few jump scares, also people were eaten (as it should be expected).
The prescreening that I attended was in 3D but besides couple of into your face moments the 3D didn't bring much to the table.
Surprisingly, there were a lot of funny jokes which made the movie more enjoyable.
Fun Fact: Something that I noticed and it bugged me a lot: after the intro of the movie there was a scene with a helicopter flying over the ocean, near cliffs. Whoever added the helicopter digitally was an amateur - the proportions were so bad. You could clearly see the ripples, the waves crushing into the cliff and if you've been near real ocean you can judge how close the camera to them is but the helicopter was so small that it looked the size of a drone when compared to the ocean ripples. They probably wanted to make it look like the helicopter was far in the distance and that the ocean is vast but it was a poor attempt. Reminds me of a stock photo from a reputable site that was a beach and palm trees. I enlarged the ocean water to use as a background (graphic design job) and I saw the pool tiles clearly - someone had stitched the photo. This helicopter was even worse!

A poor floppy specimen. 4/10
The Dolby Atmos Sound is brilliant 10/10
The 3D is a 5/10
It's Clearly been heavily cut - not just deaths. Even the regular scenes have conversations ending with odd reaction shots.
The 3D drowned:
The titles were great! Floaty bits in your face:
But they didn't bother doing it for the rest of the underwater scenes.
*1 thing hits you in the face in the 3rd act
Nice nod to Jaws with 'Pippin'
If you're expecting hilarious deaths from below go watch Piranha 3D (from a few years ago, not the sequel 3dd) it had brilliant 3D & is a whole lot of fun.
