This needed a lot more suspense or action. Overall the entire film was watching a few teenagers hanging out waiting for something to happen. Even when something finally happened in the last 20 minutes it was just ok.
I have to say i enjoyed the movie, it's of course not the best one in the X-men range, but still it was enjoyable, with a couple of well known stars in it. For me the big bonus was BUFFY!!! I will see it again maybe not in theaters but defo watchable again. Loved the end battle with Illyana she was my fav one
5 teenage mutants and the doctor talking much of the movie and in the end they fight, 2 years of waiting for this, the worst of the FOX mutant saga
I really liked this and do not understand the hate its getting at all. People complaining about not enough action hurts my brain, the X-Men are a team franchise, an ensemble cast, of quiet drama moments and character development are good to have in a movie like this. I wish some of the other X-Men movies understood how important the ensemble nature of the franchise is, even the best ones kind of don't.
What a mess. Get a cliche scenario, put some animation and lesbian scenes with a known actor. Sorry but it does not worth for watching.
was there hype or hope for this film!?
I went in not really knowing these characters, out of all the mutants present in this film, the ones that stood out and caught my attention throughout the movie, were Cannonball, and Magik! I Loved seeing a CGI Lockheed!!! Anya Taylor-Joy is perfect for Magik and also Lockheed, they were amazing for the screen time they got. Charlie also really flawless, love Cannonball! I really enjoyed this film a lot, still going to wonder if they're making a spin-off or sequel.
only the future can tell now....
Against most other comments I utterly adored this movie. This wasn't your typical superhero movie at all - this was a psychological character piece and, contrary to other comments, matches tone from some of the middle comic run.
I've been suffering badly from Superhero fatigue in recent years and very nearly gave this a moss, particularly after the huge disappointment of both Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
There is a tendency in superhero movies to try and do too much with too many and end up with soulless nothing. This was totally different. In focussing instead on a small scale character plot over a boundless epic, you were really able to build understanding of the characters.
What a bland movie, there is nothing unique or innovative, even the things it copies from other movies it doesn't do very well. The actors are from other series where they did a much better job so I assume the screenwriting was just that bad. Overal it isn't a bad movie, but one I won't remember past a week after watching it and at every moment in the movie I could have stopped and not missed seeing the end. The movie feels devoid of anything that would make it unique, stick out or memorable.
A decent film that has a story and characters that had great potential in there, but distracted target audiences and poor pacing let's it down. The cast are good (the accents are not), and if they had stuck to the tone of the original trailer of a darker, scarier thriller then it would have been something solid.
Not the worst Xmen film, but plenty of better films around.
If you’re a huge fan of the comic book, like I am, you will be severely disappointed if you had hopes this was good.
It’s not just the movie itself. The characters are nothing like the book.
My Ratings
10 - I love it, regardless of quality
9 - Very good, might not love but very well done or might love, forgiving some issues
8 - Very enjoyable or Just OK for me but well done
7 - Good
6 - Watchable despite not liking the film/show
5 - Mid
3-4 - Not great, but got through it
1-2 - Very bad/You might be a communist if you like this garbage
The New Mutants, a highly anticipated superhero-horror film, finally received its theatrical release after years of production delays and scrutiny. Despite its troubled history, the movie turned out to be a decent, if not outstanding, addition to the genre. Expectations were high but the film falls short of being a cinematic disaster, while also lacking the thrill of being an excellent movie. Though it positions itself as a unique hybrid of a superhero and horror film, the horror elements are underutilized and the movie ends up being just quirkier than most of its peers. The performances by the cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy, are adequate, with no standout performances. The plot contains forced moments meant to be epic, but they fail to have the intended impact. Overall, The New Mutants is a peculiar addition to the superhero genre, with a mix of cliche and fun elements, but nothing that sets it apart from other films in the same vein.
Just a collection of stereotypical obnoxious characters doing stuff and going through things I find hard to care about. Bad acting all around. I think I'd rather watch Morbius again.
Not the best movie, but certainly not bad. I definitely appreciated the openly queer angle (on top of being mutants, because what are mutants if not a metaphor for all types of marginalized people), and I thought the setup and acting and writing were all pretty good.
The ending broke my suspension of disbelief, I'll admit. I would much rather have had the climax of the movie be a big mutant-powers showdown with Dr. Reyes, because clearly she had some powers of her own. The whole demon bear actually being a tangible entity in the real world just felt kind of cheesy and out of the blue. I get that Dani's out of control powers were making all sorts of things manifest in reality, but the bear showing up when Dani was half conscious seemed... convenient? Like it wasn't attached to her as much as the other things were? I don't know.
As a whole, it's definitely worth a rewatch down the road! And I don't know if they're planning a sequel for this, but I'd be interested if they were, to see where the story can go from here. I have no familiarity with how these characters were presented in the comics, if they all were, but this seems like a solid start for a new storyline.
A new opening that turned out to be the closure for X-men from 20th Century Fox. It is a pity because the potential was there.
Makes me embarrassed that I actually followed this comic book series as a child.
The X-Men series hits rock bottom with its final entry The New Mutants. After her reservation is destroyed Danielle Moonstar is taken to an isolated facility with four other teenage mutants where a doctor works with them to uncover and control their powers. Featuring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Alice Braga, the cast isn’t that bad; but their performances leave much to be desired. Also, the script is incredibly poor and goes nowhere. And, there’s a surprising lack of action for an X-Men film; substituting it with teen angst and bickering. The New Mutants is a dull and monotonous comic book film that was DOA from the start (given Disney’s buyout of Fox).
"I'll see you in hell."
The good: Magik and Sunspot looked great when they showed their powers, but that is more on the VFX team.
The bad: The rest of the movie. I can see what they were going for, but sweet goodness the execution is terrible. Something about this felt off. I know it went through production hell but as someone else said it feels like a pilot to a tv show.
There doesn't seem to be much of a point to this one in terms of advancing the X-Men world, which is probably the biggest strike against it. Beyond that, the acting is okay given the ages of most of the cast, but there isn't much of a story beyond five kids being cooped up in a facility and doing the sorts of things that five kids might do when cooped up. Still, it isn't TOO bad...until the last act, when the effects strongly suggest that either this thing was made on a shoestring budget all along or else the studio lost faith in it at some point and closed the wallet. And frankly, I can't say that I blame them. Overall, the film comes across as generic and bland, and while the final act COULD have improved the overall film, it fails on technical grounds, putting the film as a whole solidly in "Meh" territory.
The girl playing Moonstar has to be one of the least charismatic actresses I've ever seen. The dialogue was painfully cringy. 4 stars for Illyana's hair lol
Slow, Boring and why do you classify a movie as horror when it was not even a bit scary?? 3/10
This is a shitty mutant version of The Breakfast Club.
I ended up very disappointed at this movie. Not that I had any expectations just really hope for something new and refreshing. This is not the case but it's not bad. I would good but mediocre. Like someone says in a few weeks I won't remember this movie at all.
There are movies that seem doomed by a curse. This is it. One of those proposals that have both potential and poor results. This story of young people with superpowers facing their own fears ends up being ridiculous at times, chaotic in its development, useless in its staging. A disaster that has its origin in the script and that from there it builds his own giant with feet of clay that cannot help but crumble.
I had high hopes and expectations for this one since I love shows and movies about mutants.... but it was so very bad.....
Trash. Pure straight to Walmart DVD garbage.
I can’t believe the studio left this movie out to die. The New Mutants is a competent film, much like its MCU counterparts from which it is being unfairly excluded. The script is poor, the editing is poor, and the final action scene is a CGI clusterfuck, but the movie is far more than the sum of its parts.
Everything comes together as an entertaining superhero romp with a distinctive style, even if there’s not exactly much filmmaking craft to be had here. Josh Boone combines the trappings of a horror film with a superhero origin story in a way that fits. Likewise, some of the monstrosities this film throws at you are genuinely unsettling.
If Dr. Strange flew in during the movie’s last scene to recruit these kids into the Avengers or something, people would be losing their mind and heaping praise upon the film. With proper support from the studio and a non-pandemic moviegoing environment, I think it could be a franchise starter. As it stands, the fact that this will be the last we see of these characters is a genuine shame.
This film will never see the light of day. Acceptance is the only thing that is left.
Not really understanding the hate it's getting. Was certainly rough around the edges and the start of the film even more so. Yet it explored an area not properly given light to in the xmen movie verse so far. Fucked up teens unable to control their powers and other entities wanting to take advantage of those new mutants.
The effects were decent, Magik's powers especially. The Buffy references were cool too. As a big fan of the comics, and having only 3 of the existing films live up to my hopes this isn't a bad entry at all. Not world changing but better than most.
This movie is utter crap
And they say Dark Phoenix was bad.
A thin script, weak acting and below average CGI cumulates into a completely forgettable movie.
I definitely would not categorize this as a cult classic. But, let me say it's decent. If there is no other mutant/superhero movie on your playlist to watch, you can watch this one. The only thing really good about this movie was the special effects. I can assure you the special effects did not look cheap; at least the movie has that goin' for it.
nope nope nope nope nope
My literal reaction to the ending of this pointless, boring, bad southern accent, stupid mutant power movie was :man_facepalming:.
Despite the movie being a little slow to start once it gets going it's an enjoyable watch. Yes, this isn't the usual level of Marvel cinematic gold but it is enjoyable. It's good a good ranging cast of high end TV actors and the personalities of the characters feed of each other well. It's has a bit of horror suspense but the enjoying comes from the interactions and the combat. Anya's illyana is a highlight with her powerset and action. All in all as a cinema experience 5/10 but at home as an evening movie a solid 7 out of 10
I didn’t think this film was gonna make an appearance and I went in it with an open mind besides all the bad reviews but I’ve seen worse and this film had it’s not so good script, poor flash back effects, bad accents from some of the cast, a monster with a similar look to slender man, could be his cousin, henry zaga stuck under a dome again, i bet he was steaming.. also some cheesy effects but it did entertain me and i was hooked till the end and the action wasn’t half bad when it got into it with an average casting that didn’t show off their best and plot if there’s one was a little rushed so yeah it could of been better but i did enjoy it and it deserves a better rating in my opinion from what imdb has given it and Xmen Dark Phoenix or The Wolverine wasn’t anything amazing..
total rubbish..lame ass writing. sponge on the run are much better than this
It just didn't make much sense. I'm not sure why they didn't give Dani more flack for not being in control.
I do hope that we get more. There are a lot of interesting stories that can be told with this.
Critics are right. This movie, like Venom (a movie that's strangely people defend) is utterly forgettable. A horror superhero movie sounds good on paper but this fails on every level.
a trash masterpiece that never had to be done
Such a bad movie, it made my never watch again list.
i actually enjoyed it even after seeing all the negativity it got. if it werent for magik and lockheed i wouldve given it a lower score, they were the best part!!!
I think that most of the negative comments are due to people being mad that it took so long for this movie to be released. I found it to be very enjoyable and not anywhere near as bad as so many reviews have said it was.
Granted, this is not your standard MCU/X-Men movie. It's more of a horror/thriller with kids struggling with some new-found powers.
But overall, this is a decent horror/thriller movie. As an MCU movie, I would still have to rate Dark Phoenix as the worst.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
What a disappointing mess. Just not interesting, sub-par effects, dull and unlikeable characters...what else would you want? Something better to do with your time is the answer.
I didn't think it was gonna be that bad! Expected more mutants to show up, but there was only 5 and their story was too cliche. Part of the story felt like it's written to appease the LGBTQ community, there's no other substance to it.
Werewolves, dragons and bears. Oh my!
don't waste your time with this peli, está remala !!
You should watch the movie as it is and not what it was meant to be, then you can enjoy it. As a horror movie, this is horrible. As a superhero flick this is meh and nothing new. It's enjoyable, but also forgettable. Wouldn't be disappointed if this doesn't get a sequel, but would be interested if they were to plan one.
A few months ago I wrote an article for The Things entitled Here’s Why You Should Be Excited For The New Mutants Movie. Sadly my article was written too soon. There is no reason to be excited for this. It’s a dull sometimes lifeless affair that needed more action and more story to make it really work. The long development process needed an even longer time to mutate.
2 yrs. of waiting to see this movie. Finally, I've seen it and I wish I hadn't. Complete bag of dicks. Awful!
Given the complicated production history of "The New Mutants," one might have expected the movie to be a total disaster. But in the end, all that came out of it was a pretty insignificant comic book movie that probably wouldn't have been given a second glance if it hadn't been part of the X-Men franchise.
The idea of changing the genre and spicing up the superhero thing with a bit of horror for once isn't even that unreasonable. However, the whole thing never gets scary and instead tends to be boring. Since the movie is quite short, it still works to some extent. And Anya Taylor-Joy actually provides a few entertaining moments, so you can definitely have fun with the movie at times.
Ultimately, however, it's a pretty mediocre conclusion to Fox's X-Men films.
I don't really have any strong feelings toward this one; it was just boring. Nothing about the setting stands out, and while it's cool to see these Mutants realized on-screen for the first time, the character writing was very surface-level. Thankfully, none of the acting was too bad.
There were a couple of moments where the visual effects were comparable to movies from the late 2000's. Plus, there was one scene where the colour grading between shots was inconsistent, and one scene had a pretty bad jump cut. When the editing is noticeably bad, that's when you know the movie is bad.
It's messy and weak all over. The designs are really cool but it's destroyed by the characters, the settings, the story, the acting and almost everything eles. I love the cast and I know they can act so the fault is clearly in the production of this combobulation.
Gave up after 18 minutes. Boring as hell and nothing X-Men about it.
what an utterly pointless film
I enjoyed this movie a lot. Especially the final 30 minutes, when all the expensive CGI action kicked in. Those final action sequences, in 4K HDR10, can be used as a demo in a TV store.
The total time of 1 hour and 34 minutes seems well spent developing the characters. I wish they kept that part shorter and gave more time for that late-stage awesome CGI goodness. Like a good old school X-Men movie.
Anya Taylor-Joy's and Henry Zaga's characters were the best bang for the buck for me. This is mostly because of the Visual/CGI effects they bring to the table. I would love to see more of those two. The other characters were not too bad overall.
As far as the broader X-Men universe timeline goes, I think this movie should fall somewhere after Dark Phoenix. But, before the events of the movie Logan (If you like to watch superhero movies in timeline order).
I thought this was about the type of mutants in X-Men. More like the mutants that live in my apartment complex.
I thought it was alright. I didn't realise it was related to x men as I've not seen any of the franchise, but as s standalone film I thought it was OK, kept me entertained for an hour or so.
I expected more. Too drab and boring, I was expecting more plot and action.
this could've been much worse given the amount of development hell it went through, but it's also not great. preteen me loved illy though, that sword walked straight out of one of my mary sue dark fantasy sci-fi dreams.
God damn, this was so borrrrrrrrrring!
I give the movie a 4/10. The real action doesn’t start until near the end of the movie. This movie will end up winning the worst rotten tomato award.
Four kids, a mansion and mutant powers, ready, we already have a movie to pass the time during the pandemic while waiting for the end of COVID-19 and the return of the good movies.
A really good mutant movie that got thrashed by the online MCU trolls. Had good actors, good plot, with new mutant characters. Enjoyed it a lot
Conceptually, this is a neat idea, but it let itself down. If it had lent more into being ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ but with a small clique of mutants in a confined space with their as yet unknown talents…but it just left me feeling like something was cut, or the idea didn’t really come together. Disappointing.
Maisie had a believable accent, props for that.
Good movie was nice to see a dark side to a x-men movie . Well worth the witch.
I'm not sure what I was expecting after all of the terrible reviews I read, but I guess I held out some hope it might live up to some of the promise the trailers gave, making it seem like a moody horror superhero flick. Instead there was a lot of boredom...characters were one-note, scenes didn't make a ton of logical sense, there was little action and even less scares. This mostly felt like someone watched the It remake and then decided to copy the structure but make it less fun and have a bear as the big bad instead of a clown-alien. I could see glimpses of potential, but it was all wasted and overshadowed by how truly dull everything was.
This is a Marvel ?? I'm so disappointed about it! Thx to Anya Taylor-Joy to give some consistency with her character... The story is ok but with a lack of real plot! The first part of the movie is so boring! And when action comes, crappy CGI too ... No this is not a good work! it make me think about Cyberpunk 2077, unfinished job which is not a problem for release it!
The canceled television show "The Gifted" was better than this...
The girl playing Moonstar has to be one of the least charismatic actresses I've ever seen. The dialogue was painfully cringy. 4 stars for Illyana's hair lol
Come on. It wasnt that bad. Not a masterpiece for sure but totally enjoyable.
I did not come into this movie as a x-men fan. I believe I’ve seen 3 movies, the 1st two and then another random one from there, I had lost interest. This movie was entertaining and I thought quite good. The story takes time to build the characters and it gets better. It was good enough that I would be interested in seeing the next installment if there will be one.
This was a disappointment. The dialogue was atrocious. It seemed they forgot to hire someone to tend to continuity. The writing of the relationships never touched on the personal which made their resolutions untenable. The characters were poorly formed. On the positive, the special effects were spectacular and Maisie Williams can’t give a poor performance even when she is given so little with which to work. I was delighted to see Alice Braga in the cast but even she couldn’t make sense of the motivation of her character. I give the film a 6 (disappointing) out of 10. [Marvel Superhero/Horror]
So...slooooooooow! Movie about mutants and zero suspense or action
this movie is getting a lot of bad rap Yes I know production has been hell for this movie but it's out now and it's actually worth a watch this is not your typical X-Men related film or superhero film kind of like how Logan is a hybrid between the superhero film and a gritty spaghetti western this is more of a hybrid between a superhero film and a psychological horror thriller
The horror aspects of the movie are kind of light
But there's still some good creepy atmosphere and visuals
The story of the movie is pretty simple and kind of predictable at certain points What I think the movie does well is focusing on the characters slowly developing them throughout the movie
this movie really takes itd time telling the story
and I think this works well certain characters I didn't care about at all at the beginning and by the end I had a new perspective for them and then other characters it was kind of the opposite effect
Definitely rewatchable, but another movie that could have done more with more the source material and a different MPAA rating. Need more Smiley Men.
THE WACPINE OF ‘THE NEW MUTANTS’
WRITING: 4
ATMOSPHERE: 3
CHARACTERS: 6
PRODUCTION: 6
INTRIGUE: 2
NOVELTY: 3
ENJOYMENT: 4
The Good:
Maisie Williams is the only standout among the younger actors, and this is far from her best performance.
Visually, this film works well, even though some scenes are too damn dark.
That final battle is fairly cool, one of the more original superhero fight and great use of Magik.
The Bad:
My first impressions of this film is a cheesy YA series pilot or some low-budget YA horror film from 20 years ago, and that immediately clouds my judgement for the rest of the film.
Blu Hunt is a relative newcomer and while she is sweet to look at and a fine choice to play one of Marvel's few Native American characters, her acting isn't always up to the level you'd expect.
None of the actors is particularly good, and that becomes evident once they are forced to show strong emotions, which falls flat most of the time.
I guess the ragtag narrative has been constructed the way it has in an attempt to create tension and horror, but it only manages to leave the audience scratching their heads. The intense parts are all over the place and come across as annoying rather than creepy.
With a sluggish pace the film builds up some kind of relationships between the central characters, but a lack of any real chemistry between most of them and a general feeling of emptiness in the surrounding world (where the hell is everybody?) makes most of this development feel pointless. This is also, why the kissing and loving feels very forced. Rahne and Dani are the only characters who seem to receive proper character development since the film focuses mainly on them.
The connections to Marvel and Fox's X-Men franchise are so thin that this could just as well have been a completely original, supernatural YA film. There is a general lack of superheroing and a general threat, which in this case works against the film. The script also doesn’t do a very good job explaining to casual viewers who these characters are and what their powers are supposed to be.
Josh Boone doesn't seem to know whether he'd like this film to be a YA drama, some kind of supernatural horror or just another entry within the superhero genre. It doesn't properly feel like any of those three alternatives.
The last act of the film is where everything falls apart; as suddenly The New Mutants decides to be a very generic superhero monster horror and you kind of wish that it wasn't.
The Ugly:
Did they just casually drop some racist jokes?
WACPINE RATING: 4.00 / 10 = 2 stars
Honestly, I anticipated it would be worse. I wouldn't say it was a great film but it's not terrible. The Banshee of X-Men movies.
The best part was when the movie ended. Airplanes wont play this movie, in fear their passengers might try to escape the agony.
.. I love the actors, but why must they all have different accents. Must you do that? And if you wanted that, why not cast people with their native tongue so its more fitting
a breath of fresh air, fucking FINALLY!!
So disappointing. I agree with the comment below. Worst of all of the mutant movies from fox.
It's far from being an amazing movie but it turns out to be very entertaining. The VFX are actually really good and it makes the movie very watchable.
So it went from originally being a horror-thriller (Fox) movie to a movie about teenagers with issues (Disney). UGH.
Didn't have high hopes before watching this one considering it flopped..so i actually enjoyed it.. didn't treat it like it's a marvel or x-men movie so it have to be huge and you will enjoy it too.
After reading a few of these comments, perhaps I should save myself the aggravation and not even watch it. I had such high expectations for this movie. Bummer..... :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
Yet again, another Marvel movie. This one has a nice pace, but it’s probably better if they consider doing a more “polished” remake with a better script. Full review on our website.
This movie has some pretty famous young actors in it. I'm pretty surprised lol. Anyway, this was really honestly not that good and there was so much over the top and bad CG.
Dani Moonstar is a native American girl orphaned after a tornado destroys her community and kills her entire family. She is taken to a hospital to learn to control her mutant powers, but the hospital hides some dark secrets.
With Dani are 4 other young mutants and their caretaker, Dr Reyes. The girl from Witch, Arya Stark and the older brother in Stranger Things are the "big" names in this movie. I felt like the mystery and the technology were really well done and interesting, but the whole thing is really a very slowly paced film with overt and terrible-looking CG. This movie sold as a horror superhero movie but it's only capable of jump scares. I can't remember any good music in this film either to complement the story.
There was an unexpected romance in the film that I thought was really cute, but it was way too quick. I thought about them being teenagers locked in a building and it sold it a bit more but still...
The charaters' powers are all pretty crazy and powerful which makes sense really in the context of the film but it was a bit over the top them trying to outdo each other. I felt like the climax of the movie was really underwhelming and relied a bit on more power of friendship elements we find a lot in anime. I didn't really like that.
I also thought that Rahne's character was stupid. She's a werewolf but transforms just into a wolf like an actual dog. Her mid transformation form is much more powerful. Additionally they CG her some dog ears. Why not just get her prosthetics?
This would be a fun film to watch with friends but not in cinemas, not for the cost of the ticket. Especially when Logan is the previous film, it's disappointing to have this be the finale.
An entertaining film with very good special effects, the trailer gave more sense of terror, but the terror in the end is nothing, I think in that sense they could have had more potential, if not, as lately all the movies happen to them, they give them that youthful touch and other potential parts are lost.
The New Mutants are just the Old Mutants except more emo.
Sadly, there were some dubious casting choices that crippled the exposition heavy first couple acts. The film eventually picks up speed, though, and hits its stride in the third act, but not really enough to make it more than a summer teen flick. If only the film had the energy of the posters...
the premiere has been postponed... AGAIN

This movie was painfully boring, and didn't contain a single likeable character. It was like watching a whiney CW teen drama. What wasn't boring, was borderline nonsensical.
Don't waste your time with this one, especially if you are a fan of the previous x-men movies.
