The Rock 1996

Back when Nicolas Cage was picky about what movies he is in...

One of my favorites. Cast was awesome. General Hummel played by Ed Harris was excellent. Sean Connery was badass.

This movie has everything, good actors, good direction, a good soundtrack... I've seen it so many times and still have fun watching it! I have never said this but... thank you Mr. Bay! :P

One of the absolute best of the big budget action romps from the 90s. Sean Connery makes a rather believable former SAS soldier, and Cage does a decent enough job as an FBI scientist of all things. Other good performances from Ed Harris, John Spencer, and Michael Biehn.

The Rock starts out fast and more than any other Michael Bay movie, never really lets you rest until the end. Highly recommended for an evening of just plain fun action entertainment.

The first Michael Bay film I actually enjoyed.

A perfect symphony of cliché and stereotype that Michael Bay's been trying like hell to recreate ever since. Literally every single shot dips liberally from the well of overuse, culminating in an early car chase with a little old lady, a roving gang of bicyclists and a dozen diving pedestrians in the road, no less than five instantly-combustible parked cars and a Lamborghini that leaps through a plate glass window.

Nic Cage and Sean Connery, no strangers to this type of picture, freely toss away their inhibitions and embrace the cheese from word one and, along with a straight-laced performance from Ed Harris, somehow validate the whole thing. The dialog would have been deemed too unrealistic for a Hanna-Barbara cartoon, but through sheer force of will (plus a few blatant winks at the audience) it works too. Top of the mountain for the “insanely stupid action flick” boom of the mid '90s, it's wildly fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable in spite of itself.

This is Michael Bay's best movie. Which means it's the one he damages th e least with his horrendous sweeping cameras and manic editing.

Nic Cage and Sean Connery are excellent. The plot is fanciful but very well executed. The tension builds and there's some good one-liners.

For a brainless summer popcorn blockbuster, there are few better than this movie.

8/10

This movie is crazy. It doesn't make any sense but it does have a lot of explosions and shooting and cheesy dialogue. Definitely has some entertainment value. Nicolas Cage is great and I wish he did more movies like this.

Easily Michael Bay's best movie.

If you want to dissect the film traditions of the 1990s and discover everything wrong with the decade's collective attitude, two movies should meet your scalpel: Point Break, and The Rock.

But that doesn't mean they aren't a bit fun.

The Rock is an action classic that delivers non-stop thrills and intense performances from its cast. Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage both shine in their roles, making for an unlikely but compelling duo. Director Michael Bay's trademark visual style and explosive set pieces are on full display, with the film's action scenes providing plenty of excitement. Overall, The Rock is a testament to the power of great casting, storytelling, and direction.

Been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but I’m surprised it’s as highly rated as it is. A lot of over exaggerated effects.

"Welcome to the Rock."

The Rock is still such a blast and it might be the best cast of a Michael Bay movie. Sean Connery is great, Nicolas Cage brings his relentless energy and Ed Harris is such an interesting "bad guy". Even the rest of the cast is great. Tony Todd, William Forsythe, Michael Biehn, John C. McGinley, John Spencer, what a list.

Anyway we all know Michael Bay can do action and this is no exception. The Rock is one of his finest. From the great lines to the great action and the typical Bay ending. The shot with the fighter Jets flying through under the Golden Gate bridge felt very "Bay". But I freaking love it.

I'm not really into the Transformer movies but his other stuff usually never fails to entertain me. Might be time for some Bay-re-watches because this one was a pleasure.

If you haven't seen the Rock yet but you haven't seen it yet because Michael Bay directed it, just let that slide and watch it. It will be well worth your time!

The Rock to me is the ultimate Michael Bay Experience, recently I have been going through some of my old Blu-Rays and I have to say that The Rock is one of the most timeless action films of the 90s and deserves credit for just being one of the most balls to the wall action films of all time. Everything from the cast to the direction was just perfect for a great action flick (Except for a few janky moments in the car chase) and it just makes it an insanely fun time.

Also, The Rock has some great characters as Nicolas Cage (Dr. Stanley Goodspeed) is just perfectly over the top, Ed Harris (Hummel) is one of the most underrated villains of all time as he shows how to depict a great villain and lastly Sean Connery (John Patrick Mason) who in my opinion gives his most bad ass performance.

If you want to watch a great action film from the 90s then look no further than The Rock, just don't forget the popcorn cause this is the perfect popcorn flick ;)

Have to agree with most of the other comments.

Harris, Cage and Connery make the movie. Without those three performances, the movie would be just another Bay Explosion fest. The Trolley Car scene was a particularly egregious example.

The music was amazing as well, but I kept hearing motifs in it that reminded me so much of other movies that Zimmer has done (particularly PotC) that it repeatedly pulled me out of the movie more than the nonsensical set pieces at times.

But in all, a good way to blow 2 hours, and it was suitably entertaining.

From Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay comes the explosive action-packed thriller The Rock. When a group of rogue marines capture Alcatraz and threaten to launch a chemical strike on San Francisco, the FBI calls upon the one man who successfully escaped the prison to lead a group of Navy SEALs back in. The film has an outstanding cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris, Michael Biehn, and Tony Todd, who all deliver great performances. And, Michael Bay does a fantastic job at crafting intense, exciting action scenes that draw the audience into the film. Additionally, the score brilliantly complements the electrifying and fast-paced action. The Rock is a great action film that comes together to deliver a wildly entertaining adventure.

The Rock is a fun time at the movies. It's implausible, no doubt, but it's still thrilling. It's scenes of action are tense and well-edited. It might not contribute anything new to cinema, but it's still worthy of a watch or two. Michael Bay directed this one, so expect many explosion.
