The Academy Award for Best Sound is an Academy Award that recognizes the finest or most euphonic sound mixing, recording, sound design and sound editing and is generally awarded to the production sound mixers, re-recording mixers and supervising sound editors of the winning film. In the lists below, the winner of the award for each year is shown first, followed by the other nominees. Prior to the 93rd Academy Awards, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing were separate categories.[1]

For the second and third years of this category (the 4th Academy Awards, 5th Academy Awards) only the names of the film companies were listed. Paramount Publix Studio Sound Department won both years.

This list is drawn from the second edition of "The New York Times Guide to the Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made", published in 2004. It contains a selection of 1000 reviews that have been printed in The New York Times in a time period of over seven decades. This is a complete list of every movie that has ever been included in the various editions of 1001 movies. Given that I only own one edition of the physical book, this is a easier way to keep track of what has been (once) considered essential viewing.

"Because of incomplete data it cannot be known for sure how much money some films have made and when they made it, but generally the chart chronicles the films from each year that went on to earn the most. In the cases where estimates conflict both films are recorded, and in cases where a film has moved into first place because of being re-released the previous record-holder is also retained."

Tearjerkers
I made this list to remind me before watching or rewatching so I can prepare myself. Some provoke happy tears but I still want to know ahead of time. I hate crying. It causes headaches and stuffy noses.
