A female friend recommended this movie. This is nothing more than cliched, sentimental, sappy teenage drivel. It shouldn't even be referred to as science fiction. There's plenty of fiction but practically zero science. In this movie, communication between Mars and Earth is magically instantaneous. Other than the premise that the boy was born and lived his entire life on Mars so his physiology is different and unable to withstand the gravity of Earth, there's not much in the way of scifi here. The whole premise is just a setup for this particular star-crossed lovers scenario. So this was my impression of the movie. Admittedly, I was a little upset being blindsided by a silly teenage romance movie, after going in expecting more.
If you are the "awww how sweet" kind of person then you will probably like this movie. It is a new twist on the old theme. Speaking of twists, there's even a twist when it comes to the boy discovering who his father is. So if you are able to avoid the scifi trap and subsequent disappointment and the things like instantaneous communication between the two planets don't bother you then you should enjoy this movie just fine. To the creators' credit, they probably figured that the kind of person who would like this movie wouldn't even realize that instantaneous communication between Earth and Mars was a problem.
The movie ends with the girl training so that she can go to Mars obviously to be with the boy. How is that supposed to play out? Is she going to go for a few months and return every year for the rest of her life. That's going to get old quick. Or is she going to leave Earth, her life, friends, and family forever to be with the one she loves on Mars essentially putting herself in the same situation the boy was so desperate to escape.
