Time again for our annual international critics’ poll of the year’s top movies. This year we asked 163 critics and curators to name their five best films of the year – and the results are a small triumph for diversity (not to mention a lot of treats still to come to UK cinemas over the next few months). Films directed by women make up the majority of the top five, alongside Barry Jenkins’ gay black coming of age portrait Moonlight in second place.
Andrea Arnold’s American Honey and Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake also show the breadth and depth of British cinema – but this is surely the first year that a German comedy is the runaway winner…

When it first debuted in 2008, Star Wars: The Clone Wars added new elements to the Star Wars galaxy like nothing else that had come before it. Set between Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the beloved animated series added new depth to classic characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul, and Boba Fett, introduced us to a whole legion of clones with completely unique personalities and other new characters including Ahsoka Tano, Cad Bane, and Asajj Ventress, and took us on thrilling adventures to strange new worlds.

This series takes place during the three-year time period between the prequel films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The show depicted the actions of various characters in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, including Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, and other Knights of the Jedi Order during the conflict, leading the clone trooper forces of the Galactic Republic against the battle droid armies of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Sith.
Clone Wars is part of the Star Wars prequel storyline, surrounding the fall of esteemed Jedi Anakin Skywalker and his subsequent transformation into the Sith lord Darth Vader. The series begins shortly after Attack of the Clones, as the failing Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order are under siege from the Separatist Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Sith. As the war rages, more and more planets slip from Republic control.
