Francis Paoli, director of Olfasens, a perfume creation company, is found dead in his office. The main suspect of investigating judge Alice Nevers is Jean-Louis Sampers, a collaborator of the victim. Indeed, Paoli and Sampers had had a violent argument during a reception on the night of the murder.
Investigating judge Alice Nevers and Lieutenant Romance investigate the murder of Julien Charvet, a health inspector at the Rungis market. He was found in the trunk of a crashed car whose driver fled. Guided by the director of market security, they learn that the victim had, a few days earlier, a violent altercation with a butcher boy.

At first, suspicions are focused on Tony Serrano, a young man from the city, known for having assaulted firefighters in the past. However, the judge explores another much more delicate track: that of the young woman's colleagues. Alice Nevers is indeed certain that the murder was premeditated. Two men at the Saint-Marc barracks find themselves in the judge's sights: Sergeant Armandin, an officer with a shady temperament who could have killed Nathalie out of professional jealousy, and Major Roissy, head of the rescue center who seemed to harbor a tenacious resentment towards the victim linked to a personal tragedy.
