I thought I'd finally see what all the fuss is about, and so far I'm pretty glad I have. It's true that it doesn't get off to the strongest start with some pretty basic storytelling and episodes which feel a bit too much on the childish side, but it continues to build a world that becomes fascinating and extremely well thought out. The characters become more interesting and complex as it goes on and start dealing with themes that are far above the "kids show" roots. It's also pretty funny.
Prince Zuko may be the most compelling character, with the first impressions of him being an extremely vanilla bad guy who is evil just because. Episodes reveal more about what's going on with him and I actually began rooting for him to have some luck. I also love his Uncle Iroh who walks the line between comic relief and genuinely important mentor.
Aang isn't the best protagonist at times due to his immature nature and the fact that he keeps repeating a lot of the same mistakes before learning from them. Katara stands out as the one to watch, with her brother Sokka being unfortunately relegated to the "idiot" role most of the time, but when he has something important to do it makes it have all the more impact.
I'm not in love with the anime-inspired visual style and jerky frame rate (I really struggle with Japanese style animation, it's always been a massive turn off for me), but later episodes have some striking art. Looking forward to seeing where it goes next.
It was a wonderful journey filled with emotion, joy, sadness, thrill, adventure and so on. A great cartoon series. Outstanding animation with a lot of fighting. Very well directed
While not every episode is a complete, 10/10 winner, the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, when viewed as a whole, it's exceptional stuff. The animation is stellar, the fight scenes are a blast, and the entire cast is likable, three-dimensional, and interesting, which makes for great storytelling as the show develops it's world and story with the finesse of the masters, particularly in regards to the unique bending abilities.
But the real treat is in the details. From Aang's subtle guilt complex throughout the show, Zuko's slow humanizing, Katara and Sokka's own complexities, and the blurry nature of war getting more and more blurry as the show goes on, this season does a lot to set that up and it pays off beautifully by the end. A fantastic first season to an overall spectacular show.
i had so much fun the whole time like
A slow start, with a few "childish" episodes but overall a great first season and foundation to build on for what overall will become 10/10.
9/10 A little too much filler, especially in the middle part. There is also a very small amount of feminist messaging. And interesting how the arranged marriage at the end with Yue is only shown as distressing for the female, and the groom (apparently the only White water tribe member in existence, what a coincidence) is just an asshole. Also Katara suddenly becomes extremely talented at the end when she wasn't the entire show, that was not explained very well. And Aang is insulted at the end too by the water master just to tear him down so they could elevate Katara. Yue and Sokka's romance also happens way too fast and is not impactful.
Great show but the Fandom/Wiki has to be completely ignored because retcons and additions to the story via the fanfiction-tier new show Korra, the extras, books, etc. are all insanely woke and disgusting and it all shows up there even if it was not in the original show (it mostly isn't). So the Fandom page in unfortunately completely useless.

Starts a bit rough, with the first few episodes especially kind of childish in sensibility (instead of childlike). Even during the bumpy first half though the mythology and world-building are so dense and well-woven that it keeps my interest. Some complexity finally kicks in around mid-point (the first episode I really like is "Jet"). It has a nicely building sense of stake-raising from then on, with some really good episodes, and the finale is downright great. Excited to continue to the next two seasons!
