Hm, guess I'm crazy cause this is the first episode I've actually liked. The plot twists in this one were amazing and really caught me off guard.

I’m starting to remember what the first season was like, and while I enjoyed it in 1997, I can see why people call it rough. The characters are all still trying to work themselves out and gel into our future Scoobies. Amy is so stiff and while some of that works with her character, it still comes across as just not very good.

Ugh... boring. Not off to a good start with this show. I'm sure it gets better, especially as it begins to succeed more and more.... but the first 2 episodes had some rough moments and episode 3 just sucked. Some of the acting is REALLY bad, mainly Charisma Carpenter - though I could just watch Buffy and Giles; and that would suffice.

I can see Episode 4 also has a worse rating - eek.

4/10 Skip it.

There's some charm in watching Buffy in her manic phase. The part with the alarm clock was hilarious, as was the very last shot, which was unintentionally like something from Robot Chicken. Most of the rest is a laundry list of bad '90s genre-TV tropes, complete with bad camera angles in experimental not-actually-filmed-in-HFR fake slo-mo and affected perspective shots and over the top, overly serious supernatural edgelording and effects. Also, disappointing to actually see a "Witches bad" episode in the show. Episode three is often where shows drop the A-team and give the writing and directing to pretty much anybody, and this is squarely one of those D-lister creative set episodes. It's episodes like this that really give you an appreciation for what Buffy did to rise above the pack of bad supernatural genre TV and forge its own unique brand of drama and humor. Even the "Master" is more enjoyable to watch than a completely self-serious (attempted) supernatural scare fest.

A nit pick, but the cheerleader uniforms were pretty terrible, too. It's like K-Mart textiles and '80s McDonalds threw up on them.

Why is this listed as "The Witch" when the name of the episode is just "Witch"?
