So how long ago did that student in the pilot die? Aren't people starting to get worried about unsolved deaths in the school?
Even though this episode has lower scores than the previous 3 episodes - this where I started enjoying the show a little more. The chemistry between the leads is starting to come together. Charisma is still easily the worst actress on the show, but thankfully she's not as common as the other leads.
But the bug aspect by the end annoyed me. Just not a fan of bug themed episodes - they always become predictable and boring. The worst part of this show is still when the action happens. Its obviously a cheap budget but the choreography feels sloppy.
I’m not sure why I didn’t see this episode the first time around, but it was when it was first broadcast and if I didn’t have the vcr set up, that’s all she wrote until the rerun. I can’t wait until we get past the unrequited crushes.
This episode felt (and sounded) a lot like a late night cable horror cheapy, but with just the right amount of humor. Agreed that this is the episode where everyone felt pretty natural in the main Scoobie Gang. I would have liked to see more brooding Giles in the series after seeing him complaining about the constant sunny and balmy weather. I'd get tired of it, too.
The cinematography and practical effects were actually good, with a fair amount of eye candy throughout, focused on the creatures and the cast. I laughed at the first shot with the monster, but it became clear that the episode was fully intending us to laugh it up while still maintaining a dark and creepy atmosphere. A very strong "six" with higher potential subjective value.

Watching through Buffy for the first time recently. I missed it the first go-round as i would've been too hardcore goth for such bubblegummy fare when it was first coming out. It's good timing, actually, i feel like the ensuing 2 decades have put me in a place to appreciate Joss Whedon's campy vision.
I feel like Teacher's Pet is the episode where the series starts to hit its stride. The main characters seem to be establishing their chemistry, which is excellent and worth watching for that alone. Secondarily, it's good, goofy late 90s fun. While this show could easily veer towards the obnoxious, somehow it toes the line and is charming instead. I feel like if this came out even 3 years later, it wouldn't have worked, as i imagine they'd have been tempted to use CGI instead of practical effects and the whole thing would've been rendered dated and cheap. Instead, Buffy has kind of a timeless quality, in lines with weird, goofy teen horror romps, from Eerie, Indiana to The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.
I also like to imagine a world where teenagers go out and watch live music almost every day. Makes me miss going to shows.
