Amy catches up with her Bohemian friends in Sydney, and Robert accuses her of exploiting his hospitality and neglecting Margery. Mrs Brookes begins the struggle to have her sister released from an asylum where her husband had her committed ten years ago.
Mrs Brookes and Arthur do battle to have Mrs Brooke's sister Emily released from an insane asylum despite the machinations of Emily's brother-in-law. In Sydney, Robert interviews a series of prospective partners for the new firm, and finally comes to an agreement with Phillip Garrick. Robert's appointment, however meets with Godfrey's strong disapproval.
Godfrey's initial misgivings about the appointment of Phillip Garrick in Sydney are replaced by keen acceptance when Garrick effects a speedy settlement of an important case. Tommy goes to court to defend a Chinese girl in trouble, to repay his debt to Percy Cheong.
Tommy appears before the High Court to try to prevent the deportation of Mei Ling but he blunders dismally. In Sydney, Amy rows with Phillip Garrick over what she sees as his stuffy conservatism. However, Garrick turns the tables on her nicely.
Jennifer takes on an Industrial Accident case defending the employer against a claim made by a worker who has lost a limb during the course of employment. Young Sam comes down with Scarlet Fever, which endangers his life and the life of baby Edward.
Jennifer fights one of the hardest cases of her career while Sam lies seriously ill from Scarlet Fever. Billy proves he has the makings of a first class legal mind when he argues the case for their client so convincingly out of Court that the opposing Barrister agrees to settle.
Tommy gets into trouble when he's attracted to a beautiful lady racing driver. A challenge to a car race nearly ends in tragedy. The relationship between Amy and Garrick becomes more volatile as it intensifies, and Garrick objects to Amy's flirtatious behaviour.
Amy is discovered in a compromising situation with Garrick, and promises Robert that she will exercise more discretion in future. Unfortunately her good resolve comes to nothing when Robert discovers Amy with Randolph Seaton. Tommy discovers the truth about the lovely Amanda, and confesses his foolishness to Godfrey.
Plagued by annoying headaches, Felicity meets the mysterious Indian Andharaj who alleviates her discomfort by hypnosis. Godfrey regards this as dangerous mumbo-jumbo. Tommy's arrival in Sydney poses a threat to Garrick but Tommy helps both Amy and Garrick to make up their minds about each other.
Godfrey defends Andharaj in court against an accusation of fraud, whilst Jennifer represents the plaintiff. Throughout the trial, Godfrey begins to suspect his client's sincerity and he finally concedes Jennifer an easy victory. Meanwhile in Sydney, Amy is proposed to by Phillip Garrick.
Arthur goes to court and successfully defends a young boy charged with theft who later cheekily admits his guilt. Randolph threatens to exhibit a nude portrait, the head of which he has taken from a drawing he did of Amy.
Billy meets an attractive young working-class girl, Peggy Roche, and begins to feel at odds with the life-path mapped out for him. Gerard is called in to deal with Randolph Seaton's blackmail attempt, and resolves the matter to the satisfaction of everyone but Randolph.
The family greets news of Amy's engagement to Garrick with delight, but Tommy makes his hostility clearly apparent. Billy's involvement with Peggy leads to a punch-up with one of her ex-boyfriends. Gerard takes Tommy's car without permission and it is subsequently stolen and involved in a serious accident.
Under suspicion for a hit and run accident, Gerard moves in with the nightclub hostess Mary, until he can prove his innocence. Robert, Margery, Amy and Garrick return from Sydney, and the engagement is announced. Garrick causes a stir by rejecting Godfrey's offer to buy the young couple a house.
Garrick returns to the Sydney office. As a matter of decorum, Amy must stay behind in Melbourne and she is most unhappy. Gerard is fed up with being the Carson family lackey and decides to seek a job with Hammer Wallace.
Gerard is out of his depth when he attempts to outsmart Hammer Wallace and ends up being horse whipped. After taking out his frustration on Des, Billy finds himself in disgrace with both Peggy and her father. Des and Peggy are re-united leaving Billy alone once more. Billy decides to leave University.
Amy finds and aids a young girl, Millie Smith, you has been brutally raped. Jennifer is concerned that Amy has talked Millie into pressing charges. Godfrey dismisses Gerard when he learns the truth about his horse-whipping. Fire, caused by Godfrey's discarded cigar, threatens to harm Felicity and Edward and burn down the Carson house.
Gerard saves the lives of Felicity and baby Edward from the Carson mansion fire. Godfrey wants to re-instate Gerard but he refuses to return to the Carson household. Felicity appeals to Gerard to reconsider. Neil Coulter is committed for trial for rape but neither Millie nor Jennifer are confident of the outcome.
With Jennifer's encouragement, Napier wins Millie Smith's rape case against her boss. Felicity begins to clean up the mess following the fire.
An old friend of Arthur's returns, seeking help. Sarah believes she is to be expelled from the Conservatorium.
Ruth Lyons reappears in Godfrey's life. Her son is charged with the murder of his father. Godfrey takes on the defence. Felicity begins to resent Godfrey's preoccupation with the case. Amy has a surprise visit from Phillip Garrick.
Felicity feels distant from Godfrey during the Benjamin Greer trial. Godfrey proves Benjamin is innocent of murdering his father. Tommy discovers Ruth and Godfrey kissing in Godfrey's office.
Arthur decides to pursue the rape victim, Millie Smith. Finding her on the poverty line, he tries to help her. Tommy finds out the truth about Godfrey and Ruth, and his sympathies are with Felicity. Godfrey leaves for Sydney to have some time alone and decide between Ruth and Felicity.
Arthur continues trying to help Millie Smith - to no avail. She sends him away once and for all. Tommy, out of sympathy and devotion to Felicity, attempts to cheer her up. Jennifer meets Russel Burns, an attractive journalist engaged in an attack on police corruption.
Tommy's feelings for Felicity develop. He loses his head, and her trust. Meanwhile, Jennifer is drawn deeper into Russell's efforts to expose police corruption, via a case involving Neville Childe, a convicted counterfeiter.
As Jennifer defends Neville Childe from the false charges laid against him, the issue of police corruption rears its ugly head. The pressure proves too much for Childe. After Amy and Godfrey meet Garrick's parents, a family friend casts aspersions on Godfrey's past causing Garrick Snr to insist the wedding be called off. Felicity anxiously awaits Godfrey's return.
Frustrated by the pressure of exams and his mother's expectations, Billy stays out all night and misses an exam the next morning. Garrick Senior refuses his son his blessing and financial help if he marries Amy, but Amy stands up to the Garricks and wins Phillip back - and an apology from Godfrey.
To Amy's dismay, Godfrey goes ahead with his plans to sue Stanley Hutton for slander. Godfrey remains adamant until a personal request is made by the Prime Minister. Billy leaves home, moves in with Mrs Brookes and finds a labouring job at a factory. Felicity becomes even more distraught as Godfrey remains emotionally distant.
Felicity joins Godfrey, uninvited, in Broadford where he is staying at a country hotel. Robert acts on his own behalf in court against a rabble-rouser from the Yarra Bank who defaces his car. Felicity is angered by Tommy's criticism of Godfrey.
Arthur, Billy and their girlfriends go to watch a dancing exhibition. Russell's flat is bombed as a result of his investigations into police corruption so he decides to lay low until things quieten down. Tommy brings an old flame to dinner using her to goad Godfrey. When his intentions towards Felicity are misunderstood, Tommy runs afoul of the protective Gerard.
Godfrey doubts Felicity's innocence in respect of Tommy's advances. Amy returns home from her wedding to discover that her father's own marriage is in turmoil. Margery tries to tell Amy about the facts of life. Arthur and Mrs Brookes become involved with the Salvation Army, in the form of Major Miriam Thomas and Algernon 'Slammer' McQuade.
Amy and Garrick are married. Godfrey suggests to Felicity that they need time alone to talk through their problems. The poor box is stolen from the Salvation Army, and Slammer decides to fight an illegal boxing match to make up the money. He is found to have killed his opponent.
Slammer is charged with manslaughter. Arthur defends him undertaking his first Supreme Court case. Jennifer acts as his Instructing Solicitor. Amy and Garrick depart on a motoring honeymoon. Their car breaks down and they find unexpected delight in a country hotel. Godfrey and Felicity go to Daylesford to try to save their marriage.
Robert takes on a rather suspect but extremely attractive client, despite his better judgement. Gerard investigates and discovers that she is in fact the villain in the piece. Amy and Garrick enjoy honeymoon bliss until a boating accident with tragic results.
After Phillip's death, Amy disappears. The family fears she may be planning to take some rash action. Jennifer and Russell find Amy and take her home. Russell Burns returns to Melbourne to find there's to be a public inquiry into police corruption. He is outrage, however, with its limited terms of reference.
As the Board of Inquiry into police corruption begins, Russell finds himself facing a charge of contempt for refusing to reveal his sources. Felicity's relationship with Godfrey hasn't really improved after all. Margery decides that her marriage needs the benefit of some 'modern' ideas. Russell withdraws from the inquiry when a threat is made to Jennifer's life.
Jennifer suspects she has misjudged Russell. Felicity tries to attract Godfrey's attention by buying extravagant outfits. Eileen discovers the mother of one of Sam's playmates is a prostitute. Russell wins the rundown nightspot "Lucky's" in a poker game, only to discover its debts far exceed its market value.
Russell finds there is no way out of ownership of Lucky's. Against Godfrey's wishes, Felicity invests in Lucky's and becomes an equal partner in the venture with Russell and Tommy. Jennifer's relationship with Russell deepens, and Arthur is not at all impressed. Eileen helps Maureen after she is attacked by her pimp.
Russell and Tommy enlist the help of their friends to prepare Lucky's in time for its grand reopening. Tommy decides to engage Roy Rene (Mo) to help launch Lucky's, but neglects to confirm the booking. Robert is given the task of defending Dr. James West - accused of murdering his wife.
Despite his late arrival at Lucky's, Mo gives a great performance and the evening is a great success. Robert is riddled by self doubt on the first day of Dr. West's trial. Eventually he trusts his own instincts. Robert is alarmed when he finds Godfrey confused and unable to stand.
The Carson household has been shaken by Godfrey's poor state of health. Jennifer is forced to acknowledge to Arthur that the office is on a decline. Gerard visits Ruth and explains that Godfrey has fallen ill. Godfrey collapses during his Christmas speech. To the family's dismay Dr. Webster announces that Godfrey has contracted pneumonia.
The Carson family try to come to grips with their fear that Godfrey may be dying. Convinced that he may not live, Godfrey tries to tie up loose ends. He asks Robert to take over the firm and asks Gerard to fetch Ruth for a clandestine meeting. Felicity becomes suspicious.
Godfrey seems to be dying and Felicity is forced to use everything in her power to give him the will to live. Ruth Lyons visits Godfrey's bedside with Felicity's blessing. Robert and Tommy ask Jennifer to rejoin Carson and Carson. Jennifer's worsening business situation forces her to fire Arthur.
Jennifer returns to Carson and Carson. Arthur accepts a position in Manchester with his father's mills. Sarah is heartbroken. Russell and Tommy are victims of protection racket tactics by Hammer Wallace's thugs. A New Year's Eve party is crashed by Hammer Wallace who brings along the infamous Squizzy Taylor. Tommy is smitten by Squizzy's girlfriend Eva.
Tommy eventually finds Eva on Squizzy's yacht working as a croupier. Arthur realises that he can't leave for England without Sarah and he proposes. Mr. Simpson and Jennifer at first oppose the marriage, then give their consent. Eva and Tommy have a secret affair. Inevitably Squizzy finds out and discovers them together.
Squizzy's plan to frame Tommy backfires. Arthur and Sarah's wedding arrangements are rushed through. They marry in church and the reception is held at the Carson mansion. There is a shooting at the warehouse and Neil is seriously injured. Gerard is arrested and charged. To protect Godfrey from learning about Tommy's involvement, Gerard pleads guilty.
Eighteen months after Amy's death, Gerard is released from prison. Having lost contact with Eva, Tommy is being groomed for marriage to the respectable Caroline Beaumont. Godfrey blames Gerard for Amy's death and wants nothing to do with him. Tommy's engagement party is interrupted by the sudden arrival
of his ex-mistress Eva.
Godfrey intervenes, forcing Tommy to renounce Eva and return to the engagement party. Eva moves into Lucky's back room. When she discovers Gerard
going through her things, a vengeful Tommy arranges to have Gerard beaten up. Tommy's fiancée Caroline discovers him in bed with Eva. Cam Neil seems to be improving and is about to talk.
Gerard continues in his attempts to establish his innocence and restore Godfrey's trust in him. Kate becomes part of the Carson household. Eva further establishes her dominance over Tommy. A beautiful and vulnerable society woman, Fiona Hastings, comes to Robert for help in obtaining a divorce.
Godfrey is concerned about his relationship with Tommy. Fiona Hastings is arrested and charged with the murder of her husband. Jennifer and Robert undertake her defence. Julia attempts to modernise the office at Carson and Carson. Eva enlists Tommy's help to set Gerard up to be murdered.
Jennifer warns Godfrey of the danger Gerard is in. Gerard is drawn into a deadly shootout with Curly. Godfrey overhears a full confession from Tommy about his involvement in Amy's death and banishes Tommy from his life.
Gerard eventually returns to the Carson household. Eva and Hammer Wallace convince Tommy that Lucky's needs a new image. Fiona Hastings reveals to Jennifer that Dr. David Morris is her lover. Surprisingly he informs them that he's appearing for the prosecution.
Fiona Hastings is reluctant to allow Jennifer to cross examine her lover Dr. Morris. Felicity clandestinely visits Tommy offering her support. At Lucky's, Wallace and Eva set up a blackmail sting on a visiting politician. Godfrey demands that Felicity relinquish her partnership in Lucky's. Fiona's trial looks unpromising when Dr. Morris suggests her mental instability.
Eva thwarts Felicity's attempts to dissolve her share in Lucky's. Tommy agrees to go along with the blackmail of Jackson, an old friend of the Carson's. Godfrey is forced to trade favours with Hammer Wallace. Margery has the vaguest of suspicions concerning Julia and Robert. Jennifer's formidable courtroom skills finally break Dr. Morris.
Jennifer is unwittingly involved in an industrial dispute at an ice plant and is arrested. Determined to have Eva destroyed, Godfrey instructs Gerard to do whatever is necessary. Julia introduces Robert to a self help guru named Lee James. A sense of unrest enfolds the Carson household staff.
The Union dispute at the Ice Plant leads to major conflict between Jennifer and Godfrey. When the workers revolt, Jennifer is injured in an explosion. Margery finds the "new" Robert hard to take and blames the hapless Julia. Felicity is forced to deal with a house-hold work-to-rule campaign led by Eileen.
Having lost her eyesight, Jennifer is admitted to hospital for observation and eventually surgery. As antagonisms reach a crescendo, Margery forces Robert to make a choice between herself and Julia. Tommy accepts his responsibilities as a father and assures Eva all will be fine when Godfrey discovers he has a grand-daughter.
Jennifer finally has her operation to reattach her retina. Godfrey tries to buy off Eva but discovers that she will not succumb. He develops a paternal attitude towards his grand-daughter and offers Tommy a reconciliation to return to the Carson family.
Jennifer is installed in the Carson mansion. Despite Godfrey's best intentions, she becomes a virtual prisoner and she decides to flee. Eva moves to undermine Tommy's rejection of his father and the Carson clan. Robert and Julia's friendship reaches a point where it could become romantic. However, Julia halts any possibility in that direction.
Jennifer returns to her flat. Determined not to become an invalid, Jennifer astounds Godfrey by turning up for work. Robert and Margery's estrangement is reconciled. Tommy blames his father when he is unable to find a position in a law firm. Eva convinces Tommy to effect a reconciliation with Godfrey so they can destroy him.
Tommy thwarts a kidnapping attempt on Edward. Despite her blindness, Jennifer has to interview a client and she copes efficiently. Carlos and Kate spend a night locked up together against their will. It is a scandal for the household staff. Godfrey takes a step towards reconciliation with Tommy and Tommy plays along.
Determined to re-instate Tommy and accept Eva into the family, Godfrey arranges a dinner party to celebrate the couple's engagement. Jennifer takes on the case of a young petty thief, Gil Bishop, who has been charged with murder. She later learns Bishop is being framed by Hammer Wallace.
Jennifer and Dalton investigate Hammer Wallace's involvement in the Bishop case. To impede the court case, Wallace arranges to have Dalton kidnapped leaving Jennifer alone to decide whether to appear in court in Dalton's place. Gerard leaves no stone un-turned to find proof of Eva's perfidy before her marriage to Tommy.
With Dalton still missing, Jennifer decides to defend Bishop on her own. Godfrey is prepared to have Tommy back in the family. Feeling betrayed and embittered, Tommy finds a letter from Eva. Sensing the desperate tone of its contents, Tommy rushes to find her.
Robert Carson takes on the case of a school girl who claims she has been assaulted by her teacher. Godfrey and Dalton combine forces to convince Jennifer to
undergo an operation by an eminent specialist. lan Kerr befriends Tommy and wangles his way into Carson and Carson.
The Carson household finds itself being dictated to by a precocious eighteen-year-old girl when Meredith Creswell comes to visit. Carlos becomes the butt of racist antagonism. lan Kerr continues to befriend the Carson family. He is offered lodging by an enthusiastic Margery, and a none-too-impressed Robert.
After unsuccessfully trying to borrow money, Tommy is forced to take out a second mortgage on Lucky’s He bets the lot on a horse race. lan employs a particularly dirty trick on Robert to win a court case on his own. After a long and agonising wait, the bandages are removed from Jennifer’s eyes.
Prostitutes are being murdered in the vicinity of Lucky’s nightclub. One of Tommy’s customers becomes a prime suspect. The other suspect is Tommy. lan Kerr begins to win back Julia’s respect. Kate is embarrassed by an unexpected visitor - her tearaway lrish father. Dalton accompanies Jennifer when she leaves for the country to recuperate.
When Tommy is charged with the murder of a prostitute, he spurns Godfrey’s offer of assistance. Though a little wary, Julia finds herself more and more attracted to Ian Kerr. Godfrey finally announces that he will personally defend Matthew
Barnes, the man charged with the prostitute murders.
As Godfrey prepares to defend Matthew Barnes, the pressure intensifies. His household comes under siege. lan Kerr boldly continues his manoeuvrings at Carson and Carson, cementing relations with a prominent client. Neville, the runner for Tommy’s bookie, cooks up a scam to double-cross his boss and set up Tommy in his place.
Godfrey is defeated at almost every turn by Christopher Dalton during the first day of Matthew Barnes' murder trial. Gerard locates Rosemary Flyn - who befriended Matthew Barnes. She agrees to act as decoy to flush out the real ”Redlight Slasher"! Dalton is offered a plum job in Canberra. He asks Jennifer to think about their future.
In the defence of Matthew Barnes, Gerard provides Godfrey with the information he needs to bring his client a not-guilty verdict. Jocelyn Woods, a woman from lan Kerr’s past, re-appears asking for money. lan is forced to pull a double-cross on Tommy during a horse race. Dalton presses Jennifer to decide if she will marry him.
Jennifer takes on a child custody case for an old acquaintance, Ann Preston. She is surprised to find Chris Dalton will be representing the husband, David Preston. Godfrey tells Ian and Robert that they must settle their differences. lan becomes suspicious of Felicity’s involvement in the custody case. He bluffs her into revealing her previous affair with David Preston.
Jennifer and Dalton oppose each other in a custody battle. Though Jennifer wins the case, the issues raised force Dalton to realise that he and Jennifer have no future together. Felicity avoids being revealed in court as an adulteress but lan Kerr knows the truth and intends to use it to achieve his own ends. Julia resigns from Carson and Carson.
Julia asks Kate to stand in for her at a grand reception where Kate meets and charms a Spanish nobleman. lan continues to undermine Felicity’s security and confidence in her marriage. He proposes an alliance. Robert agrees to represent a black musician on a minor charge.
Godfrey returns from Sydney, concerned at Felicity's state of mind. She confesses the truth of her past affair. When Don Alfonso takes Kate away with him for the afternoon, Carlos suspects that Kate has been abducted. When Ian’s ruthless tactics result in Robert winning the Josh Mill's case, lan is made a partner of Carson and Carson.
lan informs Godfrey of Tommy's S.P. Bookmaking operation. Tommy, hires a private detective to check out Ian’s past. He discovers that one lan Kerr died in London three years ago. A woman deliberately shoots a prominent K.C. in the Supreme Court. Jennifer decides to represent her - much to the whole legal fraternity’s displeasure.
In defence of Elizabeth Howard, Jennifer decides the only hope is to plead temporary insanity. She fights for her client’s life to the last minute. Tommy meanwhile savours the pleasure of having unmasked lan’s false identity.
Tommy is unwittingly embroiled in Hammer Wallace’s prison break-out, which ends in a violent shoot-out. Tommy informs Ian he plans to bring Carson and Carson to its knees. Carlos helps Kate with a friend facing eviction. Julia resigns from Carson and Carson leaving the firm in the lurch, and Margery in charge of the switchboard.
Carlos becomes emotionally involved when he attempts to help Ellen Stokes re-establish her tenancy. Tommy receives a proposition from Kelly, Hammer Wallace’s right hand man. Godfrey confronts Tommy about his gangland aspirations. Felicity receives bad news about her father’s health. Carlos misses saying goodbye to Ellen - and blames Kate for their departure.
In order to get extra money, Carlos becomes involved in teaching dancing lessons. He finds they’re not all that they seem. Godfrey is appointed to head a Royal Commission into crime. Felicity seeks Jennifer’s help to discover the truth about her father's past. The secrets unearthed are shocking for both of them.
Kate helps Carlos rid himself of the stigma of the bogus dance studio. Sir Humphrey's will states that his fortune is to be divided equally between his children.
Felicity finally shows Godfrey the letters revealing Gerard to be her half brother. Godfrey withholds this information from Gerard but when lan Kerr uncovers the truth, he and Tommy decide this is just the ammunition they need.
Kelly assaults Felicity to send a warning to Godfrey to back out of the Royal Commission. Tommy loses confidence in Kelly and decides to dispose of him.
Godfrey gives Tommy a final chance to run, rather than face the Commission. In the park with Carlos, young Edward and Kate are abducted by Tommy’s henchmen.
Edward and Kate are being held in a disused brothel. Godfrey enlists Gerard and Carlos’ help to find them. Godfrey is forced to soft-peddle interrogations relating to Tommy in the Royal Commission because Edward’s life is in jeopardy. To Godfrey's relief, Gerard and Carlos find and free Edward and Kate. The Royal Commission has not quite finished with Tommy Carson.
Thanks to Gerard’s evidence, Tommy now faces a murder conviction. Undeterred, Tommy assures his father that it’s not over yet. With lan Kerr’s help, Tommy manages to escape from his cell. Once again, Godfrey and his family are under threat. Julia receives a surprise visit from her mother - Isabelle. Julia senses a trap when her mother reveals she has brought an eligible young bachelor.
Ian and Tommy conspire to incriminate Harry Armstrong, a small time thief, for the killing of a policeman during Tommy's escape. With Tommy at large, Godfrey insists that Felicity and Edward take refuge in the country. Jennifer is convinced that Harry Armstrong is not guilty of murder and defends him in court - opposite Godfrey acting for the Crown in prosecution.
In the defence of Harry Armstrong, Jennifer is able to use the testimony of the driver involved in Tommy’s break-out to have Armstrong acquitted. With Ian’s assistance, Tommy finds Felicity and Edward’s country refuge. Tommy forces Felicity to ring Godfrey and urge him to join them as soon as possible.
At the country refuge, Gerard is shot during an attempt to help Felicity and Edward escape. Godfrey arrives to confront Tommy but is stopped when the police
arrive. Ian realises that Jennifer and Robert intend to investigate him and he takes steps to outwit them. Finally, Godfrey gives himself up to his son.The outcome of their reunion is death.
After Tommy's funeral, a benumbed Godfrey is left to put his life back together. Carlos is banished to Robert and Margery’s for a short stay. Meanwhile Kate is contacted by Peter Mason, an old school friend, looking to rekindle a romance. Julia becomes suspicious of Ian’s manipulation of the firm’s trust funds. He is forced to abduct her in order to buy time for his escape.
Robert starts to check on Ian's movements. Gerard returns to report - the Ballarat Construction Company doesn't exist. Robert and Gerard eventually find Julia and free her, then go after Ian. At a deserted country airfield, despite Gerard’s frantic efforts to stop his biplane taking off, Ian escapes with all their money.
Robert has the unenviable task of breaking the news to Godfrey.
After the Ian Kerr debacle, Godfrey is shattered - there is no fight left in him. Kate goes after Carlos to reveal her true feelings for him. Gerard goes through the motions of establishing himself away from the Carson household, but it’s not what he really wants. Dalton proposes to Jennifer but she feels betrayed when she
learns of his involved in the takeover of Carson and Carson.
