KQED's award-winning restaurant review series Check, Please! Bay Area launched in 2005 with a simple premise: to welcome local diners — not professional restaurant critics — to share their favorite Bay Area restaurants. Each week, host Leslie Sbrocco joins three local diners who recommend their can't-miss dining destinations. After anonymously trying each other’s restaurant picks, the guests come on the show to champion, celebrate and even critique their experiences with humor, enthusiasm, and authentic conversation.

At our first restaurant, we head over the bridge for daily made-from-scratch Mexican recipes with home-grown harvests at Cosecha in Oakland’s historic Swan Market. From there, we take the winding back roads to a hidden haunt tucked away on the Carquinez Strait in Port Costa, where Bull Valley Roadhouse puts comfort cuisine back on the map. Finally, Michael Warring in Vallejo boasts molecular cuisine with stellar presentations plus down-to-earth service and style.

Classically decorated and romantically lit, this elegant location exudes Old World charm serving traditional dishes prepared tableside at Papillon Restaurant in Fremont. More than just a bakery you’ll find tasty, organic breakfasts and brunches at Marla Bakery in San Francisco. Finally, contemporary Latin food made with the best local produce and created using classical French technique can be found in Redwood City at La Viga Restaurant.

The stresses of the day are soothed away with the combination of Laotian, Burmese and Pakistani flavors at Camber Montclair Restaurant & Bar in the East Bay. In the town of Napa, you’ll find professional service, a relaxed atmosphere and the perfect steak at Cole’s Chop House. Next, take a trip to San Francisco’s Mission District where you’ll find house-smoked pastrami, fresh-made pickles and warm-baked bread at Wise Sons Jewish Deli.

For a blend of Jamaican and Californian flavors using local and organic ingredients, take a trip to the Caribbean oasis at Kingston 11 Cuisine in Oakland. Local artisans gather together to supply simply-prepared fresh-food in sustainable surroundings in San Mateo at 31st Union. Our last dining destination serves a Cal-Indian menu that combines classical French cooking techniques with fresh local ingredients at The Campton Place Restaurant in San Francisco.

Our first visit is a Parisian-style bistro in San Francisco where the modern setting belies the traditional menu at Monsieur Benjamin. Next, a gathering spot for locals desiring a seasonal, contemporary menu at Aly’s on Main in Redwood City. And finally, this bayside location with stunning views serves up the ultimate in fresh and local seafood at Hog Island Oyster Company in San Francisco’s Ferry Building.

Our journey begins in the North Bay as we travel to the historic town of Petaluma where satisfying, locally grown, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine takes place in an old brick building, next to the river at Central Market. Next, we visit the place where southern cuisine meets local Bay Area ingredients with some tasty twists on American classics at farmerbrown in San Francisco. Our last stop is a casual spot that grinds meat daily without additives or preservatives for contemporary fast food done right! You’ll find it at TrueBurger in Oakland.
