This real-life documentary thriller traces the parallel stories of Berkowitz, as well as the dedicated New York City detectives who worked day and night to capture the serial killer. The use of dramatically produced re-enactments, an original interview with David Berkowitz as well as actual news footage of the shocking events gives the viewer a chilling insight into how one of the most brutal killers in American history was brought to justice.

The total number may never be known, but at least 26, and as many as 100, unfortunate women and girls were victims of Ted Bundy during his four-year killing spree. That such a savage monster was to all observers a dapper and charming man makes his case all the more compelling. How did authorities track, capture, and prosecute Ted Bundy? This program interviews prosecutors, detectives, psychiatrists, forensic scientists, and Bundy's neighbours and classmates to seek answers. Ted Bundy may have been executed in Florida in 1989, but the memory of his reign of terror lives on.

Investigators hunt for clues that will help them capture a killer believed to be responsible for the deaths of over 48 women in Washington State. The killer picks prostitutes because he thinks he can kill as many of them as he wants without getting caught. He chokes them to death. After his capture Gary Ridgway, the so-called Green River Killer, confesses to all of the murders, saying "Choking is what I did and I was pretty good at it.

This episode follows investigators as they examine the crimes of serial killer Richard Ramirez. In the early eighties he struck both old and young, though the brutality he showed towards his female victims was especially horrific. He became known as the Night Stalker because he would only strike during the midnight hours, entering homes through open windows or doors and escaping of California's freeways. During the summer heat wave of 1985, Los Angeles residents kept their windows locked and lived in fear until his killing spree finally ended. On August 30, 1985, months after his first known murders, he was finally apprehended. Convicted of 14 murders in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas, Ramirez still haunts the memories of those who lived through his reign of terror.

Dubbed the ‘Hillside Strangler’, the killer remained at large for a year after the last of his victims was discovered. As this episode of Deranged Killers details, when the Strangler was finally caught, ‘he’ turned out to be ‘they’; security guard Kenneth Bianchi and his cousin, Angelo Buono. Investigators relive every step in the case, from the discovery of the first victim to the 2002 death of one of the killers in jail. After committing three brutal murders in Texas, drifter Henry Lee Lucas confesses to dozens of others, in the mid-eighties. Law enforcement officers are convinced they have caught the most dangerous serial killer in American history. Lucas provides details of crimes nationwide which led to over 200 murder cases nationwide. This episode details Lucas's alleged crimes from the perspective of those who investigated them. But later, independent investigations suggested that Lucas's claims were bogus and argued that he had been fed information for his confessions by the Texas Rangers. Yet another investigation, by the Texas Attorney General, reached the same conclusion. Lucas then recanted all his confessions, claiming that he had made his outrageous claims to expose law enforcement and prove that ‘they don't do their job.’

Following what was, at the time, the worst mass murder in US history, investigators pore over the evidence, attempting to uncover clues as to how and why it happened. What they learn about Charles Joseph Whitman will become a template for future law enforcement prevention and investigation of such crimes. At twelve years old, Whitman was the youngest Eagle Scout in America. He was an altar boy and the pitcher on his Catholic school's baseball team. To everyone, Charles Joseph Whitman seemed like the quintessential ‘All American Boy’. But on August 1, 1966, at the age of twenty-five, one day after he'd brutally murdered his mother and wife, Whitman carried a small arsenal of high-powered weapons and 700 rounds of ammunition to the top of the University of Texas clock tower. For 97 minutes, he shot at the students, teachers and bystanders below, wounding 31 and killing 14.
