Kate fails her drivers test, again. She borrows Dad's car and Allison's license to get to The Police concert. When she getting into a fender bender, she, Allison and Michael must hide the damage from Dad.
When Kate meets Eric at the gym, it's lust at first sight. With Michael working late at the shoe store, Kate spends most of her free time with Eric, who thinks her name Allison. When Michael catches her, she has some explaining to do.
After going to separate schools, Kate and Allison must attend the same high school when Kate's is turned into a shopping mall. Worried that her sister will not adjust easily, Allison gets Kate a job on the yearbook staff. Kate instantly wins over her new classmates and makes Allison feel like the new girl.
Allison meets a nice college guy who wants to take her to a museum exhibit. Problem is, this means missing her chemistry lab. Kate volunteers to take Allison's place in class so she can go on the date. After Kate and Allison's lab partner, Miles, mess up the assignment, the trio tries to sneak back into the school at night to correct the mistakes.
Allison and Kate enter a dance contest at the gym, the finals of which are to be held on television. While attempting to spy on the competition, Kate falls and sprains her ankle leaving Allison to defend the family honor alone.
Tired of living in Kate's shadow and sharing a birthday, Allison decides to move in with Beth.
Allison believes she's found true love with Steven only to find that he is not as devoted to her as he seems.
Kate and Allison try to set Dad up with a friend from Chicago only to find out Dad and Beth are more than just friends.
The girls make their move to New York City, settling in with their Aunt Margo and setting out toward their respective ambitions (Kate as an entertainer, Allison as a fashion designer).

Kate auditions for rock star Nick Rush and lands a job as his backup singer. Kate goes on a 7 - week tour, leaving Allison on her own in New York.
A sudden snow storm forces the girls to celebrate Christmas in New York instead of going home to Iowa.
Margo's social life is in a slump, so Allison and Kate attempt to get her a date. In a misguided attempt to lift Margo's spirits, Kate hires a man from her acting class to date Margo.
Margo is nominated for an award, but after losing so many times, she choses to send Billy in her place. He chooses Allison as his ""friend"" date, but both come home wondering if they could be more than just friends.
The girls recall their days in Des Moines while cleaning their bedroom in New York. (Complete with clips from Season 1, of course.)
Kate meets a popular New York DJ at a restaurant and immediately starts planning a wedding only to discover she is not the only Foster girl he is interesting in.
Allison is asked to write an article for her school newspaper. With much help from Margo, the article is published and receives rave reviews making Allison think her future is as a writer, not a fashion designer. When she sets out to write a profile of Mr. Arrechia, her future as a writer is in jeopardy.
Kate auditions for a commercial for Maxi Burger. After a week of rehersal (driving her housemates insane) she loses her voice the morning of the audition. Allison agrees to go in her place and wins the job. When the real Kate arrives to shoot the commercial, she is fired for not being ""shy"" enough.
Late-night movie watching inspires the housemates to imagine themselves in some of cinema's greatest scenes.
As her wedding anniversary approaches, Margo is feeling sad and unappreciated by the girls. To make Margo feel better, the girls, with their limited budget, take her to a rustic cabin in the mountains. The cabin turns out to be a little more rustic than they had imagined and a sudden snow storm alters everyone's outdoor plans.
Everyone in Allison's design class loves the new, rich girl Janie Blakemore until she steals Allison's ideas and presents them as her own. Allison soon finds out Janie is only in the class because her parents want her to have a 'respectable' profession. Her real love is stand-up comedy. Kate agrees to help Janie get her career started by using her as a warm-up act in an Amateur Night perfomance.
Allison dates an older man, only to find they don't have much in common.
Dad makes a surprise visit to New York to see the twins. He disapproves of their new lives and demands they move back home to Iowa. Allison reluctantly obeys her father and prepares to leave New York. Kate resists and has no plans to join her sister.
