Bengt-Åke, the chairman of the parish council, discovers to his own horror that Östra Nöbberup has gotten its first beggar. Fanny, the local deacon, heads out to help this man in need which makes Albin jealous. Albin, on the other hand, starts a collection for a physically handicapped girl and Jan donates some less than successful projects from his childhood woodwork class.
The parish of Östra Nöbberup gets a devastating notice of an impending merge with the parish of Västra Nöbberup. The employees are worying for their jobs and Jan thinks himself the clear signs of the Apocalypse when Fanny considers moving back to Norway. The vicar Albin, who fears both losing his job and the woman of his dreams, starts a project of making his parish look as good as it ever can.
