The opening episode follows the prisons opening in 1852 up to 1948. It was a purpose-built prison constructed to house men, women and children who had committed crimes. In 1902 it became a women's only prison and a brand new gallows were installed.
The closing episode follows the prisons history from 1948 up to 2014. The 1955, hanging of Ruth Ellis was the last to take part in Britain. Myra Hindley was incarcerated in 1966. Holloway inmates including Joyce McKinney and CYnthia Payne are profiled. Plus a look at the psychotic 1980's drugs used to try and improve the conditions of the prison. The show also looks at the modern day treatment of the prisoners.
