Eric Armistead (David Swift) is a Sunday league association football referee. Rosenthal explained that for him "life is an Immorality Play. Right never triumphs over wrong. Good never vanquishes evil. No one knows the meaning of 'fairness'. Which is why he's a Sunday morning referee - hoping that in his own small way, in a foreign field that's forever Manchester, he and his whistle might change the world." He referees a match between Sunday league teams Parker Street Depot XI and Co-Op Albion XI, but the game is ugly and violent, and it ends with the referee, driven to exasperation by the players, heading the ball into the net for the winning goal. It stars David Swift, Freddie Fletcher, and Gordon McGrase. It also features Anne Kirkbride, who as a result of her performance was cast in Coronation Street in the role of Deirdre Barlow.

  • 1977-06-19T23:00:00Z1h

World ecological collapse; the next ice-age has already begun! Lucky for us, governments know what to do. Unfortunately it's a conspiracy to end all conspiracies. Vanishing scientists, dubious space missions, and a freak accident which kills the courier of a tape containing a secret radio message from an unmanned Mars probe - holds the key. Ruthless investigative reporters uncover the ominous master plan. undefined Alternative 3 is a television programme, broadcast once only in the United Kingdom in 1977, and later broadcast in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as a fictional hoax, an heir to Orson Welles' radio production of The War of the Worlds. Purporting to be an investigation into the UK's contemporary "brain drain", Alternative 3 uncovered a plan to make the Moon and Mars habitable in the event of climate change and a terminal environmental catastrophe on Earth. The programme was originally meant to be broadcast on April Fools Day, 1977. While its broadcast was delayed until June 20, the credits explicitly date the film to April 1. Alternative 3 ended with credits for the actors involved in the production and featured interviews with a fictitious American astronaut. 20 June, 1977 On that Monday evening, the UK's Anglia Television broadcast the last program in its Science Report series, a series of serious science documentaries that were produced by highly respected science reporters. The program was called Alternative 3, and it was simultaneously broadcast in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Greece, and Yugoslavia. However, it was never telecast in the United States. Some say that the "powers that be" prevented it from being screened here. The documentary focused on a number of amazing "facts": There are three possible solutions for mankind: Alternative 1 - Stop all pollution immediately and blow two huge holes in the ozone layer. This would allow excessive UV light to reach the earth and mil

Self-taught as a conductor, Thomas Beecham gave two concerts with London’s New Symphony Orchestra before gaining access to the family fortune. Thereafter he was able to indulge his tastes: to found the Beecham Symphony Orchestra, to introduce to Britain many Russian works as well as the first English performances of Richard Strauss’ Elektra, Salome, and Der Rosenkavalier, and to finance the first London appearance of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. As recording technology progressed, his talents were recognized by millions who never heard him in live performance. With Timothy West as Sir Thomas Beecham and the Halle Orchestra in performance, this program follows the career of a stubborn and highly talented man with the economic freedom to ignore the conventional and refuse to tolerate mediocrity. Nearly as renowned for his anecdotes as for his idiosyncratic but superb musicianship, Sir Thomas Beecham is deftly characterized and lovingly remembered in this moving and amusing production.

Penelope Wilton is note-perfect as Jean, a lonely, seemingly harmless housesitter who builds an elaborate fantasy world when she collides with two other lost souls in this dramatisation of Morag Joss's subtle, absorbing novel. Jean is well-meaning, but after a chance meeting with thief Michael (Daniel Mays) and pregnant girlfriend Steph (Sinead Matthews, see below), she embarks on a desperate course when the three are bound by tragedy. It's an excellent, slow-building thriller that fills the viewer with trepidation at each inexorable step, as the three spend an idyllic summer at Jean's "borrowed" home (a gorgeous manor house). Though highly improbable (there are plenty of plot holes, if you want to look for them), Half Broken Things works extremely well, thanks to the three central performances and a prickly feeling that all will not turn out well.

Top British actors David Morrissey and Tara Fitzgerald star in a gripping new thriller based on a real life crime. U Be Dead tells the story of disturbed serial stalker Maria Marchese who was sentenced to nine years in prison for the sustained intimidation of a London doctor, his family and even the lawyer who prosecuted her. The Metropolitan Police called it "one of the worst cases of stalking we have ever had to investigate" and the drama is told with the help of the people who suffered at the hands of Marchese. Dr Jan Falkowski (Morrissey) and his fiancée Debbie Pemberton (Fitzgerald) could think of no-one who would want to stalk them with threatening texts and phone calls. Even when the stalker professed to being in love with Jan, they refused to take her increasingly manic behaviour seriously. That is until she broke into their houseboat and opened the gas taps, threatened Jan’s family and attempted to cancel their wedding. Jan and Debbie’s relationship began to suffer under the strain. In fear for their lives, they moved to an address nobody, including their parents, knew. After staging a fake wedding, Marchese's threats worsened and what followed, no one could have predicted... U Be Dead co-stars Lucy Griffiths (Robin Hood) and Monica Dolan (Wallis & Edward, The History of Mr Polly, Poirot).
