I'm going to try and keep this short because I simultaneously have too much to say and yet nothing to say at all. While some plots and characters are somewhat interesting, Koala Man is a very mediocre show that reeks of missed potential. The voice cast is great, the concept is super fun, and the animation is surprisingly smooth at times, but shows are made or broken by their writing and I just don't think Koala Man is a very well-written show. Most side characters stink, I feel like I've seen the majority of the plots a million times, and there are way too many pop culture references. That was, until the second half. For some inexplicable reason, starting at episode 5, this shows becomes much more enjoyable. The characters feel deeper, the jokes feel funnier, and the plots feel more original. "Emu War II" is especially noteworthy due to its ambition, with tons of weird new designs and very high-quality animation.
But half of a show being good does not a good show make, and unfortunately, the first half is still extremely mid. Maybe a second season will rectify things but for now, the show is just kind of whatever. For a better adult cartoon released somewhat recently starring Michael Cusack, I'd highly recommend Smiling Friends over this any day.
