Rio Sage, having just moved from Hawaii all the way to Malibu, makes a new group of friends including Sofia, Sean, Keaton and the handsome Joey, whom she has recently begun dating. When Joey's ex, Ally, hears about their new romance she decides it's time to crash the party that Rio is at with Joey.
After seeing Joey cozying up to Ally at the party, Rio begins to worry that he's still hung up on his ex, sending Joey into damage control. Joey invites Rio to a bonfire and promises her that Ally won't attend.
Everyone hits the beach for a twilight bonfire. Joey and Rio finally talk, and the evening seems perfect--but it's not over yet. While s'mores and moonlit walks on the beach are romantic, what's more exciting than an uninvited guest?
Joey and Rio are dating, which means Ally is officially upset so she plots with the girls to win over Joey. Meanwhile, Rio spends the afternoon with Sean after being brushed off.
Joey surprises Rio with a romantic gesture; but Rio surprises him with a loaded question. Ally decides she needs to up the stakes if she really wants to make Joey jealous. Later, things heat up as Ally and Sean join their friends for a group date.
The boys are heading to Rio's place and girls are on their minds. Joey hears about Ally's evening with Sean, and Keaton reveals his new crush. Later Ally hits up a party, hoping Joey will give her the sign she needs to make her move.
The party is lit but it seems like Sean is adding some fuel to the fire. Keaton tells Courtney about his feelings for Bailey and she agrees to help him. Ally's plan is in full action but with Rio close by will she be able to make Joey jealous?
While everyone is out surfing, Rio gets stood up. Sean comes through for her but Rio has no plans of letting Joey slide.
Rio learns that Joey went to Ally's house the night before. She's upset but not letting it get to her since she has a friend visiting from Maui. But when Rio runs into Joey later at the beach things go from bad to worse when a fight breaks out.
Keaton's throwing a dayger and Rio isn't going to shy away just because of Joey. With Ally at the party things get uncomfortable quick. What will Rio do to get her man back?
Keaton's party is over but the drama isn't. Ally and her friends are still in shock over what Rio said to her while the boys are divided over the Sean and Joey fight. It's just another day of trouble in paradise.
The dust still hasn't settled after Rio and Ally's confrontation. Ally's hiding out from not only her phone but also from Joey. Rio tells Joey to make up his mind of between her and Ally. Later, Sean consoles Rio but it's obvious he's got more on his mind than just friendship.
Ashlyn decides to take a trip up the coast and tries to convince Rio to join her. Meanwhile, the secret slips when Sean admits to Ally and Courtney that he kissed Rio. But who will break the news to Joey?
After Joey learns about Sean and Rio's kiss he's forced to hang out with Sean - and it's off to a rocky start. Ally talks to Courtney about how she wants hang out with old flame Dylan. Meanwhile, Ashyln leaves for her road trip and Rio is tempted to go.
Rio, Ashyln, and Sofia's girls trip has officially started and they're enjoying their time away...especially when they meet two new cute boys. Joey and the boys are finally all back together and there's no drama, but that might change after Sean sees a picture of Rio with the new guy.
Everyone is arriving at the surf meet and Joey feels some real competition when Ally arrives with Dylan. Sean meets up with Rio for the first time since the kiss and comes face to face with the mystery guy from the picture, Eugene.
The competition has begun and it's not going well for anyone. Joey can't focus during his heat because his mind is on Ally. Things get even worse when he's back on shore and Ally approaches him followed by Dylan.
Rio is worried Sean is mad at her too after his collision with Eugene. Everyone goes to a party that night but Joey wants to avoid Ally for fear she's now with Dylan. Eugene and Sean talk and it doesn't look like Sean is going to forgive him.
The party is still going strong but everyone is divided. Joey tries to make things right with Dylan after their fight on the beach. Later, Rio and Joey finally sit down to talk about their relationship and where they go from here.
Ally and Bailey walk in on something unexpected back at their beach house. Meanwhile, Rio chases down Sean to talk about what's going on between them. Joey and Ally called it quits, but is it forever?

Ally follows her dreams as she meets with music producer Ajdin at the studio. Meanwhile Joey runs into Maddie at her sorority's fundraiser, and the tension is real. Sean tags along on set with Rio and Bradley, feeling like a third wheel as he feels his relationship threatened.
Ally is back at the studio, where Ajdin encourages her to write a new song that comes from the heart. She feels herself drifting even farther from Joey, so this provides inspo for her new song. Meanwhile, Rio becomes fed up with Sean's jealousy, while Joey has something to reveal to Maddie.
Sean expresses his distrust about Bradley and Rio to the boys. Meanwhile, Courtney is insistent that Joey is cheating, but Ally doesn't want to hear it.
Rio questions if Sean is being controlling or just jealous of her being around Bradley. Meanwhile, tensions rise as Courtney suspects that Keaton's been cheating.
Joey is ready to show Ally how committed he is to her but Ally senses some other forces are now coming into play. Meanwhile Bailey is looking for a new roomie, perhaps she will be able to lock down Ally.
Rio questions if she was too harsh during her confrontation with Sean. Ally and Courtney sit down for the first time since their fight, but can they remain friends? Meanwhile, Sean and Bradley meet face to face.

Bailey and Van go on a second date to the beach that's interrupted by Sean and Joey who run into them. Meanwhile, Rio and Sofia go surfing with the new guy, Tristan, but what are his intentions with Rio? Will they be more than just surf friends?

Sofia is having a photo shoot for her swimsuit line and Rio is her photographer. Swim shoot models Ally and Bailey are surprised to see that there will be male models joining them. Keaton tries to help Van move on from Bailey but things don't quite go as planned.

It's finally time for Ally's performance. Back at their house, Sean and Sarah get in a big argument. Will this be the end of their relationship? After Ally sees Joey and Emily together she decides to move on from the drama and start something new, maybe beyond Malibu.

Sam confronts Courtney about the fight that he witnessed between her and Sarah at the surf sponsored event. Sofia and Keaton continue to hang out, as more than friends. Later, Joey shows up to Ally's showcase event to support his girlfriend Emily.
It's Valentine's day and Keaton gets the singles in the group, including Sofia, to go to a Valentine's themed party. Meanwhile, at dinner, Emily confronts Joey about texting other girls. And later on in the night, someone goes from single to taken.
Sarah shows up to Sean's house to return some of his belongings, they two talk for the first time since their break up. Later, Emily vents to Ally about her relationship with Joey and how she's starting to not trust him. Meanwhile Joey tells his friends his side of things.
Ally and Courtney find out Sofia is exclusively seeing Keaton. How will Courtney take Keaton being in a new relationship? Joey gets Emily a gift to try to mend things between them. Later, Van contemplates if he should go on his study abroad program but still keeps it a secret from Bailey.
