Documentary following the restoration of the Qianlong Garden in Beijing's Forbidden City that was left untended for more than 200 years due to an imperial edict. The restorers visit a tiny mountain village where the last remaining maker of mulberry-bark paper creates his art in an ancient mud brick workshop. 1x03 Caravaggio's Secrets

  • no air date1h

Two groups of art students, from Rome and London, test theories about the work of Caravaggio. The discovery of a bailiff's inventory listing items repossessed from the artist's studio in the Italian capital provides an insight into how he might have worked, and raises the possibility his genius may have had as much to do with technological innovation as stylistic flair.

1x04 Artemisia

  • no air date1h

The life and work of 17th-century Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose depictions of biblical stories frequently took the female perspective. In Susanna and the Elders, she defied convention to depict the woman vulnerable beneath two older, conspiring men, and her multiple versions of Judith Slaying Holofernes reveal powerful protagonists beheading the invading general. Author Alexandra LaPierre and art historians explore the influence of her life on her paintings, particularly her rape at 17 by a friend of her father.

Documentary exploring the career of the 16th-century Florentine court artist Bronzino and the build-up to a much-awaited exhibition of his work in Tuscany in 2010.
