The episode was emotional yet it had been clear from the beginning that Arthur would live so there was no real tension. The only question was which one of his close ones Merlin would have to sacrifice for Arthur, whereas Arthur's rudeness in conversation with Merlin makes us doubt whether prince Arthur is really worth saving. The ending with Merlin coming up with the idea of sacrificing Nimue's life was quite predictable, while the special effects certainly look dated today.
