[7.3/10] I enjoyed the “inter-generational dispute” and ruminations on “slackers” as a theme in this one. The opening bit with Bob and David arguing over minor “generational” differences between them, before uniting in their hatred of a gentle hippie (whom you might recognize from Freaks and Geeks) was a fun intro.
The follow-up “No Adults Allowed” bit was a nice riff on “Hello, Fellow Children!”-style TV programming, though it ran out of steam once it got away from the pre-taped portion. The Commercial Awards segments was a little uncomfortable, but at least mined that discomfort for some dark humor.
The “drunk cops” segment didn’t really do much for me, as it was one joke stretched to eternity. The “Odenkirk as Iguana” segment was initially a hoot, both its conceptual weirdness and for Odernkirk giving an all-out physical performance. But it went on too long -- seemingly the achilles heel for sketches on this show -- and got a little to broad for me by the end.
But I loved the final segment. Marrying a Jesus Christ Superstar riff with Jack Black as the slacker messiah is just inspired. The sketch does a nice job of aping the specific style of that film, and between the whole crew’s silly dancing, and Black rocking the “wishy washy post-modern chillbro” vibe in musical fashion, the whole thing was a lot of fun.
Overall, more of the show’s creativity and spark is coming through at this point, which is encouraging. And hey, I’ve officially made it further into the show’s run then my first attempt to watch it, so go me!
