This is a strange story about a not particularly attractive man named Henry, the woman he can't get, and the killer mouse brooch that does his bidding. Yes that's right. A mouse brooch.

I never thought much of Sondra Locke. To me, she was always just that actress in old Clint Eastwood movies. But here she gives a good performance and looks beautiful, which is the point. She's actually in love with John, a hunka man that we never see, and that makes ugly Henry jealous. Really jealous. Mouse brooch levels of jealous. I also read that Sandra Locke is very fond of Twilight Zone and Night Gallery so that adds to her appeal.

Here's another example of an okay story that is saved, for me anyway, by some cool direction. Jeff Corey directs here and I have to say that I was floored by the final shot of Cora Peddington's husband. The quick cut from the funeral parlor to the soon-to-be late Mr. Peddington really shocked, and frankly, freaked me out.

Stuart Whitman is really good as the crusty, bitter captain of a fishing boat. I thought the opening scenes in the old tavern were great. The tension that Whitman's captain creates is overwhelming. The salty sailor is mean and nasty; he'll mess you up. The mermaid is well played and the costume is pretty good. And, without giving it away, the closing twist is satisfying even if the "fish" doesn't exactly sell it's impact.
