I want to slap both of them.

It's really well-thought-out that Marianne's recollection of the "seeing other people" talk is quite different from how it plays out earlier in the episode. Connell actually says "so I guess you want to see other people" but in Marianne's version, it's "so I guess we should see other people". Also, in Connell's version of events, Connell is visibly hurt right after Marianne says "I guess so" with a straight face. In Marianne's version, Connell is the one with the straight face as he gathers his stuff and leaves.

Spoilers ahead for the book.

In the book, the "right moment", according to Connell, slips away and he's unable to ask to stay, a bit like the pool scene but without the timidness. Connell's version of events is depicted in the book so I assume it's what happened in the show too.

Amazing portrayal of misunderstandings.

The beginning and end of the episode are good, but as the case with the book, the soapy plot is draining my affection for the story. It's perfectly fine to have deeply flawed protagonists, but the melodramatic treatment and constant shift of timeline feel superficial and fail to provide deeper insights into the insecurity and flaws of these characters.

Oh, this is the first time they’ve done a thing where they remember a happening differently… interesting, but also strange, it came very suddenly. The show “The Affair” was really good with that, toying with what or whom you should believe. Memory isn’t infallible.

Connell is actually right in asking Marianne why she's dating such an awful guy.

i have to say, the choice to cast fionn o shea as jamie was very smart. himself and his south dub accent pisses me off enough as it is, but it is took to a new degree when he’s playing a wanker dickhead.
