It's really well-thought-out that Marianne's recollection of the "seeing other people" talk is quite different from how it plays out earlier in the episode. Connell actually says "so I guess you want to see other people" but in Marianne's version, it's "so I guess we should see other people". Also, in Connell's version of events, Connell is visibly hurt right after Marianne says "I guess so" with a straight face. In Marianne's version, Connell is the one with the straight face as he gathers his stuff and leaves.

In the book, the "right moment", according to Connell, slips away and he's unable to ask to stay, a bit like the pool scene but without the timidness. Connell's version of events is depicted in the book so I assume it's what happened in the show too.
