"I thought I was going to grow up too fast and miss everything, but I think I managed to make the best of it."
This show is something special, man. Years-worth of cartoons watched, and I've never really seen a show quite like OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes. It's quite unique.
It's clear throughout the series that this show was created for and by fans of cartoons, specially those that came out of the Cartoon Network renaissance like Steven Universe. In way, despite its shortcomings, I think this show accomplishes something even better than Steven Universe: a story full of heart and charm, with an even more satisfying, unexpected conclusion. I won't go into spoilers, but with the crew facing the show's cancellation, it's actually quite brilliant how the writers managed to bring everything full-circle in this character-focused story from beginning to end. It did feel a bit rushed during the final season sure, but I give props to the crew for acknowledging that abruptness in the show as a sort of metahumor that ties well with the rest of the show's tone. And when revelations and twists came to the forefront, I was actually quite surprised by all of them.
Another charming thing about this show is just its pure wackiness. Yes, the characters are designed around the traditional "modern-day" designs, but the animators play around with TONS of other styles throughout various sequences, making each episode have something wild to look forward too. Even the humor matches that cartoon-like quality, with my personal favorite being the re-occurring joke that K.O. is always "6-11 years old". It's the little touches, alongside the cast of fun characters, that make this show surprisingly entertaining, despite it feeling like some troll videos that animators would put together on the internet.
So, yeah. I was quite surprised by OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes. It's not some deep cartoon with a compelling narrative and emotional message, but a cute story about a kid growing up in a world of heroes. And with its short runtime, it's an easy recommendation for cartoon lovers.
