This mesmerizing, carefully crafted, funny, dark perfect show is available on DVD now.
Joyful sigh.
“Over the Garden Wall.”
I love animation. The way it bends and threatens to transform into different shapes. The distinct art styles and unique interpretations of reality. It allows us to see things reality won’t let us, either because it’s difficult to see or impossible. I love it all.
It’s the spooky season, and what better way to start it off than by watching a spooky little animated series? A friend o’ mine told me about “Over the Garden Wall” back in 2019. But here in Australia, it wasn’t available on any streaming services at the time. Well, it’s available now, and I’m pleased to say I loved it.
Although it’s not Autumn here in Australia, this show gives you its fair share. Forests, bluebirds, pumpkins. All the strange characters our heroes meet on their journey are as zany as they are weird. It’s a peculiar show, but it feels familiar somehow.
The art style evokes old-timey animation; the 20s. The music, with soothing strings and Gregory’s catchy tunes, just sends me back in time. The eyes and some of the character designs remind me of Cuphead.
If you can watch the series, I highly recommend it. It’s only 10 episodes, and each episode is around 12 minutes long. It plays well episodically (at first, I watched one each day), but it also plays well while bingeing. I know my score doesn’t show it, but I wouldn’t change anything about this series. I adore it.
This show is hauntingly beautiful. I love how creative it is. It learns all the right lessons from Adventure Time without being derivative of it in any way.
I hope they make more.
The beast is a metaphor for time and age, right?
I watched this the first time when I was abt 13-14 years old and it was So scary. I had nightmares for a week. I didn’t saw many, like 3 Caus it was always on times when I wasn’t home or up. But after those episodes I didn’t watch it anymore Caus I was scared. Now I’m almost 18 and I’m excited to get back into it. It’s good animated tho
MY THOUGHTS ON OVER THE GARDEN WALL:
-WARNING: Spoilers Below-
Over the Garden Wall is a dark yet beautiful tale, I honestly think no matter your age you will enjoy this. If you're a fan of Adventure Time or other big Cartoon Network shows then I feel like you'll enjoy this show a LOT. It has a dark, sad yet beautiful story which makes you smile, laugh and even shed a tear, it's incredible that they managed to put all of this in only 10 episodes.
One small issue I had with the show is at times it got a bit slow and the pacing wasn't as good as it could be and it would lose it's "focus" this wasn't remotely major though and that's just me picking on an issue. I really enjoyed the show honestly and I can see a lot of people falling in love with the show.
Overall I honestly really enjoyed this, it was a good quick watch that had a beautiful story that kept you thinking. The fact that this came from Cartoon Network absolutely baffles me!
Overall rating:7/10
Focused, charming and beautifully animated and written.
Absolutely amazing. Definitely the best cartoon I have seen in years.
Such a weird, unique, yet wonderful show. The characters were all likeable and memorable, every setting was wildly creative and intriguing, the humour was really great, and the story, whilst rushed in places, really was something excellent overall. There was a great sense of childhood nostalgia through Greg's adorable naivety, perfectly mixed with some really dark themes through Wirt and the overarching narrative. I'm serious - this gets pretty dark, especially in the last few episodes. It was a fun little trip, and an intriguing story, all capped off by a magnificent finale.
Sure, this was very strange and sometimes offputting. Sure, I didn't need to hear the Cartoon Network intro at the start of every episode. But this was a really great, really different experience that many would enjoy, and one that I will likely enjoy more on revisits.
Thanks for the 110 minutes, Over The Garden Wall.
You wonderful mistake of nature.
This show did more in just 10 episodes than most other shows and even most other movies. Beautiful art, haunting atmosphere, amazing design and characters.
I found it boring and a little corny.
It's like a western version of Spirited Away and it pulls it off excellently.
This is the type of show that makes me wish there was more like it. Over the Garden Wall is Cartoon Network’s first ever mini series that is rich with loveable characters, well crafted storylines and hauntingly beautiful autumn atmosphere. Every Fall I look forward to coming back to experiencing the trip into the unknown again and again.
LOOOVEEEE this show! its so cozy and autumn-y. Just can’t imagine this season without over the garden wall. Very special series <3
Charmingly clever, Over the Garden Wall undershadows its cute presentation with dark tones of surprising depth. Like the world the characters explore, there is more than meets the eye.
Incredible! Beautiful animation, art style, music. Well, I didn't like musical scenes but music in general was awesome in OtGW. I like cute, simple and a little bit naive characters like Greg. It was funny, beautiful and dark. I love it!
Simply beautiful, a great short story
A very simple one yet mesmerizing and beautiful.
this was beautiful a great autumn watch
The show is known for its beautiful animation, haunting atmosphere, and its blend of humor and darker elements. The series explores a variety of themes and issues, including growing up, dealing with loss, and the power of imagination. The show's voice acting is superb, particularly from Elijah Wood as Wirt and Melanie Lynskey as Beatrice, and the music and sound design are also exceptional. The show's storytelling and pacing are well-crafted, with each of the ten episodes building upon the previous one to create a satisfying and emotional narrative. "Over the Garden Wall" has been praised for its creativity, originality, and its ability to appeal to both children and adults.
This animated limited series is basically a full-length movie split into ten parts, and every episode is great. This story is simple in what it is trying to do, but every episode brings in something fresh and different while keeping the overall narrative moving many people will say this is one of the greatest shows ever made, and I would not disagree.
Good story, a long time ago I was very reluctant to watch animation because I thought it was for children or something very childish that treats people as stupid or inferior.
But... this series proves when I was wrong, the plot, characters, design, colors, and much more, make this a great adventure that I really enjoyed, I wish I could erase my memory and watch it again, because you really fall in love with the characters.
The way they approach things and how they happen is beautiful, the frog is the best and I loved the second chapter.
Very unique art style and animation that carried a certain charm with it, each episode offered some character exploration with the two leads, satisfying conclusion with all loose ends wrapped up as well as some really touching moments between the characters. While some episodes did drag on in some areas, the interactions between the characters, beautiful animation, and great voice acting made for a compelling mini series
Very well planned and executed. The show did a brilliant job of exploring the concept 'fear of the unknown' with just 10 episodes. Characters were three-dimensional and believable, the animation was smooth, and the story arcs were beautiful. Even though it was a bit childish at times, I loved the story twists and the dialogue. It also managed to deliver cliché messages in a non-cliché way while explaining the premise of the show and the backstories. Everything was tied in really well, I'll definitely be watching it again in the future.
I watched this via Foxtel
This is my second time watching this, and I am even more confused than I was the first time. Such a cutesy and lovely little show that I could watch over and over again.
People familiar with this animated genre consider this 11 part film to be perfection. I admit I am not qualified or familiar enough with the medium to speak on the qualities a trained eye would see. So the things I can comment on are casting, which is star studded; episode story arch, which weaves a cohesive mini-story in 11 minutes; the integrity of the plot line, which finishes with the beginning of the adventure which, in turn, provides the context and answers questions regarding the peculiarities of the main characters; and, finally, themes, which are many - death, suicide, love, fear, hope and despair - to name but a few. I don't thing the genre is my cup of tea, so my rating is a mere 7.5 (entertaining) out of 10. [Cartoon/Animation, Fantasy, Family]
Short and beautiful story. Watch it!

Short, sweet, and absolutely gorgeous. It's pretty dark, but not excessively so, and it was paced great. I wish there was a sequel, but there's no way this can be topped by itself.
