I DID NOT STAY UP UNTIL 5AM FOR THAT SORT OF AN ENDING.
what a rubbish ending. miss heywood did not deserve this!!
I'm so glad I discovered this in 2022... It was a great binge and the new season starts next week!!! I can't wait... And now don't feel mad about that ending lol
Very sad ending. I don't like it at all. Hope for another season.
Welllll... At least Esther and Babington got their happy and well deserved ending. I know I'm glad about that. They're two of the best and most compelling characters on the show. Also, this is probably the first and only episode where I wasn't slightly irritated by the music score. It was actually quite beautiful and very fitting for every scene. Unlike the rest of the episodes.
Sigh... I wish we could've seen Sidney's time in London with Eliza. I HATE that it happened off screen. I need to know more about the what and how and why. Because for now it kinda doesn't make sense. It feels like a rushed and incomplete ending. Probably it was done to ensure a second season. I mean it was OBVIOUS to her that Sidney no longer wanted to be with her. Any self respecting lady would lend or give him the money. Especially if she truly loves him like she claims. She'd want to help save his family. I guess she really meant it when she said she'd waited 10 years for them to be together. Come what may. Even if it means trapping him in a marriage he no longer wants to be in. Ugh. Poor Sidney. AND POOR CHARLOTTE. They almost got their happy ending.
Accurate history it isn't, and ok so we don't really expect that, but the 'hero' wandering around with at least two days stubble?? Gentlement in the time would never do that - nor would they fight in a ring. They certainly practised, but only with masters of the craft in Jackson's Studio. As for gently-born girls wandering around without a maid, going into men's houses - oh, please. Whoever the producer is should really not be let loose on historical series, no matter how light. The series was amusing, but the story has more holes in it than a badly crocheted garment. And then, when it was obvious we were getting to a finale, ITV must have figured they had enough viewers to warrant a second series. Oh god. Well, I won't be one of the viewers.
This was an absolutely terrible ending to an otherwise entertaining Austen-ish story. Even if they wanted to ultimately move the characters to the relationships the show ended with, the execution and abrupt episode ending, since one imagines this is meant to be a one and done series/season, was incredibly frustrating and very un-Austen. This episode felt rushed and scattered and just like so many other shows that try to wrap things up without source book material as of late. Incredibly disappointing.

That's how it ends? That's it? Open ended?
Oh, well. By now Esther and Babington were the love story I was here for anyway. He was the sweetest, most charming guy ever and she turned out to be such a more complex and compelling character than Charlotte. So much more interesting.
And they did my boy Stringer so dirty. He didn't get the girl, he turned down the dream job and his dad died. The boy can't catch a break! I'm so broken hearted for him, but honestly, he deserved better than Charlotte. In my mind, he goes off to London, meets a girl who falls madly back in love with him, becomes a celebrated architect and lives happily ever after with his lady love. He deserves it. He's considerate, hard working, and noble to a fault. He's earned a happy ending.
Also, Theo James is really sort of wooden. He's great for an aloof, stoic character, but the moment he has to display emotion it all kind of falls apart. Or maybe he and Rose didn't really have that spark of romantic chemistry and that's why he came across so meh. I don't know. I can only say that I couldn't muster any interest at all in their relationship. I'm sort of glad we didn't get the cliched "poor" girl/rich boy ending.
