This admiration for Hugh Hefner is a horrible side effect of America's obsession with celebrities. Even when he was younger he was just a creepy guy. His celebrity status can't outweigh this fact. And that was even true in 2000.
This whole NYC vs. West Coast theme is perhaps a welcome addition to the show, but in hindsight both Californication and Mad Men told that story a lot better.
All in all, it's a mediocre episode. What happened to Carrie's pitch to Hollywood? Why isn't that story told? I tell you why: cause their actual jobs, dreams and hopes don't matter in this show. Women are there to present fashion, talk about emotions and be entertaining. Even Muranda's job - for all what we know she happens to be a successful lawyer - won't play a major role in this show. Actual serious business is reserved for men.
PS: it's kind of funny that Miranda states the obvious: People like Carrie probably couldn't effort such a large apartment.
