[6.8/10] Having just watched the first two seasons of Westworld, I’m well-positioned to appreciate the story of one of the oldest of a series of robots slowly but surely gaining something approaching sentience. Granted, this is a meh-quality Spider-Man cartoon from 1999, so its depiction isn’t nearly as nuanced or in-depth, but it’s still cool seeing the X-51 robot come to life with its altruism and to have the robo-progressive Spider-Man recognize his personhood pretty readily.

Granted, the whole “you can’t order me to do evil!” thing is a big cliché as a path to self-actualization, and the episode was full of double-crosses and ugly, empty calorie action galore. Plus, I’m pretty sick of John Jameson being the stick-in-the-mud, doctrinaire freedom fighter, and the little moppet they’re making Spidey’s kid sidekick.

But still, the X-51 robot becoming sentient story is a solid one, and this version of Spidey is growing on me. He has a few too many quips, but they’re generally good, so I’m on board.

Overall, a lot of fluff and filler here, but a solid premise to build the episode around.
