One of the very best TNG episodes. It might not have any aliens, time travel, Borg or Spaceship battles but it does something 99% of all other episodes fail to do. It genuinely makes you feel for a non-bridge-crew character. The death of Ensign Sito left a mark on me unlike any other TNG death including Tasha's. Truly heartbroken. She went out like a G. Courage and duty above and beyond.

This flips around the usual Trek formula and gives us a story from the POV of the lowly ensigns. We see the main cast doing their thing, and then they disappear and we don't get to follow them. It was an intriguing concept and really well done here. The four low-ranking crew members (and the civilian bartender) that we follow are all interesting characters that the script allows us to become attached to. Seeing things from their perspective actually makes the senior officers feel more intimidating - Picard's dressing down of her is actually quite hard to watch.

The editing between the two poker games is excellently done.

Lovell and Ogawa are likeable, but Taurik is maybe a bit too Vulcan to really enjoy. Mostly, this is about Ensign Sito and the excellent performance behind her. It's a testament to the strength of the episode that her death seems to have far more weight than any previous one on the show.

Ok, this one actually was unnecessary and sad. Sito was a character that could have been developed a lot more. Instead, she is sent into her death in a far too dangerous mission. :( I liked her a lot. She was young but pretty mature. Other than that, I think Shannon Fill should have kept on acting, she was a pretty good actor. Sometimes it's sad that 30 years ago the entertainment industry didn't have such a wide impact like today. Shannon would have been seen in a lot more productions nowadays, if she would be in that situation today. Sad to have lost a good ensign and an aspiring actor.

I maintain that if we didn't see the death, it may not have happened. We may yet see Sito again.

Great concept for an episode, should have done more like this.

But the whole secret plan was horribly stupid and incredibly risky, and to put the life of a young ensign at risk by sending her into hostile territory without any support whatsoever and make her completely vulnerable in an escape pod is not something that would even be considered just to restore a Cardassian spy to his post.
