I was really enjoying this, a great mystery was building up and I was intrigued as to what Spock was up to. Then the extended flashback/episode viewing began and barely held my attention.

From a production standpoint it makes absolute sense to use the scenes shot for the unaired pilot as you basically get a free episode. The studio already paid for it and no one then knew that it would be released decades in the future.
But instead of simply showing it they weave an intruguing and exciting story around it where Spock is willing to risk in life out of loyalty to his former Captain. At the same time he has to be loyal to Kirk and that dilemma presents us with what will become, in my eyes, one of the highlights of the whole show

By now, TOS is slowly reaching out more, feeling more adventurous and less contained. It’s also beginning to build some kind of mythology and canon around the characters and the world. This episode builds up a mystery with many fronts and loose ends but doesn’t bring them together very efficiently, to begin with. We start to understand Spock better, which is great. What a clever way to bake the original pilot into the plot of this episode, while spinning out a new story from it. And what a cliffhanger!

What a convoluted plot! Can't wait to see the conclusion!

Even having watched The Cage and know the story, I am intrigued as to what Spock has planned. I think I know the answer, but it is still a great story to wrap around the clips. Far better than any other clips episode I have seen.

A dozen episodes in and there's already a courtroom drama. Spock kicks some butt, pinching redshirts' necks and taking some punches. So far, it's Spock at his toughest physically and mentally facing up to the death penalty for hijacking the Enterprise for a trip to the only forbidden planet in the galaxy, Talos IV.
