    In France, since 1987, an annual Téléthon, for the muscular dystrophy charity in France, L'Association française contre les myopathies, is held by France 2 on the first or second weekend in December, with the support of France 3 and France 5, and the public radio networks (France Inter, France Info, France Bleu). Several events are organized all around France. Donations are made by telephone or at the Téléthon's website, or on mobile web portals, as well as through SMS messaging (and also Minitel in the past).

    1st French Annual Telethon which was inspired by The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. Lewis agreed to be the patron of the first show and he made a closing speech which was translated into French. He said: “For the first time in the history of France and this disease, the great people of this country have given the children hope. You must feel wonderful to know you have brought hope to these children. And all of us here love you and we hope we see you next year.” The show raised 181 327 459 francs (27,6 million euro). Ever since this first Telethon, every year, AFM-Téléthon invites French people to sign a pact with scientists: together, they bet on the future.
