Following the death of Caesar, Marc Antony and Octavian both laid claim to the Emperor’s political heritage. Beyond the bitter rivalry between them, the battles of Philippi and Actium marked the end of a clash between two distinct world views: between a vision centered on the Mediterranean and the dream of an Asian empire, in short between East and West. Above all, it sounded the death knell for the Roman Republic and the end of Hellenism, and the advent of the Roman Empire. The films are made entirely using full-synthesis images, which blend reconstructions of virtual sets with live actors, underpinned by a permanent respect for historical rigour.
