The break between tradition and modern warfare was probably most exemplified in the cavalry forces. Riding with shiny breastplates the sabre in hand, charging the enemy in brightly colored uniforms. But the enemy now had machine guns, artillery and barbed wire and the cavalry role had to be redefined.
